  1. Forget worst pitching staffs in Twins history, this has to be one of the worst pitching staffs in the history of major league baseball.
  2. Same old mediocre Gophers. I still don't see what anyone sees in Leidner. He should have been moved to fullback 2 years ago. He's not a big 10 quarterback. I think Dave is pretty close. I'll be shocked if they win more than 6 games.
  3. In what way did he put up better numbers than Gordon?Unless I'm looking at bad info, it looks like Gordon out OPS'd him by 60 points, while 2 years younger.
  4. Well the logic is that Ryan probably thought, at the time he signed Santana, that we would be a playoff contender by now. Instead we are the worst team in all of baseball. At his age, you have to weigh how likely it is that he can continue to pitch effectively by the time we are serious contenders. You have to maximum your assets. If the new regime feels that it will be 2 to 3 years before we compete, as I do, then you might as well try to get something that CAN help your next contending team. After all, we are going to lose 100+ games even with Santana's great season. So, I'd flip the logic on you. What is the point of keeping him? To try to win 73 games next year instead of 70? That does nothing for me.
  5. Tonkin isn't eligible for arbitration yet, so he'd still make the minimum for at least one more year.
  6. Because if there are none on the open market then the only avenue is trade.
  7. I hope you are right. I just don't see it, especially with the same coaching staff coming back next year. It's fair to expect the young guys to improve, but there is also no guarantee that next year is going to be the year they do it. Santana is very unlikely to pitch this well again next year. Guys his age don't tend to keep out pitching their career lines. So we need even MORE improvement to make up for the expected regression from him. Gibson and Santiago both are who they are at this point. I agree, that means they should be better next year. But, not so good that they really move the needle from awful to league average. Mid to high 4 ERA guys just don't do that much. There is a lot of really good pitching out there right now, which makes the Twins situation even more frustrating. I think the gap between even the ceiling of our pitching staff (nevermind their actual performance), and the above average staffs out there is a lot bigger than some posters want to admit.
  8. 14 to 15 wins is still a lot to make up. And that only gets them to .500. People are saying playoffs. I just don't get it.
  9. I agree that we could compete for a wild card with an average pitching staff. Where I disagree with some is hoe far away we are from even that mediocre bar. This pitching staff isn't just bad. It is embarrassing, pathetic, awful. I don't think 1 offseason can even come close to fixing it. It's just too awful. I think it will take 1 offseason just to close the gap between us and the second worst pitching staff!
  10. Sure, but I'm just pointing out how hard it is to make up 23 wins in one offseason. Also, if a highly paid professional needs someone else to inspire them to do their job then those guys need to be outright released right now. This isn't little league.
  11. 1. Sure, it COULD be that. But it also could be that he really won't allow him to be fired. We don't know yet. 2. Of course not one year. But for all we know Pohlad is telling candidates that Anthony is their GM. Yeah I know that's unlikely, but sorry I don't have a lot of faith at this point. And as I've said before, that stance on Molitor is perfectly reasonable in a vacuum. But, I want the new POBO making that call, not the owner.
  12. With those k and bb rates, I'm giving him one more year. Or, at least another partial year, until Burdi, or Reed or someone is ready to come up. If we were are playoff cobtender, I'd probably look to upgrade his spot. But I don't think we are so I'd wait one more year.
  13. The Twins need to find about 23 wins next year...just to get to .500. An all star is worth about 5 wins by himself. Think about that for a second. I mean, miracles do happen occasionally. But you shouldn't plan on them. Every move made should be with the goal of making the playoffs in 2018.
  14. You are probably right, but, the owner has already declared that he chooses the manager. Whats to say he won't choose the GM as well?
  15. So basically the same rotation as now, and we just hope it gets better? If you are going to do that, then you might as well just trade Ervin and Dozier, because we already know the results of that rotation.
  16. I mean, unless it's an emergency, is a 1 hour flight really that different than a 2 hour flight? And do those saying that it might be because he already was in talks for the Toronto job realize that this is not a lateral move? He is 3rd in line in Toronto. Nobody in the world is going to fault him for pulling out of that job because he got offered a top spot somewhere. Mackey and Judd just discussed this a few minutes ago. Mackey heard that the reason several candidates have declined is because our organizational infrastructure is several years behind that of many clubs.
  17. But guys are passing on us to be 2nd fiddle elsewhere, not even for other top spots. That is the most disturbing aspect to me.
  18. Jeff Passan – Verified account ‏@JeffPassan Sources: Ben Cherington isn't the only exec who has turned down interview with Twins. Multiple GM types have rebuffed their interest so far. Anyone still insist that Pohlad forbidding the new GM from firing Molitor won't affect the search? And if so, what do you think the reason is?
  19. Can you give examples of things Goin is doing that are good? I mean specific examples that can be compared to other teams. I'm not saying he's not good at his job. I just don't know how we have any idea.
  20. I agree with diehard here. It's OK to say that Granite is a solid prospect in a different way than most, but also that he doesn't really belong in HITTER of the year conversation.
  21. I don't think his bat can ever play in a corner spot, can it? I mean he's likely a .665 max OPS guy in the MLB.
  22. I don't think anyone here wants the hire to be an old school type of guy like LaRussa.
  23. Unless Stewart can drastically improve his k rate, his upside is probably Nick Blackburn.
  24. I think the main reason that very few guys on that list had any success is because if you are allowed to hit that many home runs in a season, and still spend all of it in the minors, then you are probably a very flawed prospect.
