Article: Derek Falvey, Thad Levine Era Begins
Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wasn't referring to his decisions as GM, I was referring to his evaluation of the players he had assembled at the start of each season. He looked at (scouted) a collection of baseball players, and his evaluation was that they looked like playoff contenders. Several times that was his evaluation, and each time he was wrong, most of the time by a massive margin.- 68 replies

Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm pretty sure both teams that just finished the World Series traded for their respective aces. The Twins traded for the only ace they've had in my adult lifetime (Johan- most people think we took him in the Rule V draft, that's not quite true. Someone else took him, then traded him to us.) Liriano was traded for. He would have been an ace if he didn't blow out his arm. You absolutely can trade for future aces. You just have to be smart enough to outscout everyone else, something we haven't had in a while.- 68 replies

Article: Derek Falvey, Thad Levine Era Begins
Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not a single one of those pitchers has come close to proving anything, other than Gibson, who has proven to be mediocre at best. Left field also needs an answer, Rosario's ceiling is 4th OF'er. The other 2 outfielders have a lot of promise, but each have 1 good month in the majors. Gordon hasn't proven anything in the minors, let alone the majors. Sano may not be able to play third base. We have a plethora of options at DH, but none that anyone can have complete faith in right now. Yes, this team is still rebuilding. The rebuild is not complete until raw talent stats to turn into proven baseball players.- 68 replies

Article: Derek Falvey, Thad Levine Era Begins
Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Absolutely. Short of revealing specific strategy, or industry secrets, I'd like my teams to be as direct and honest as they can. Fan interest is what allows them to make millions off this game in the first place. Plus, I don't see the downside. Nobody is going to buy season tickets just because the front office tells them they are going to be good.- 68 replies

Article: Derek Falvey, Thad Levine Era Begins
Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well the game, and the way talent is evaluated, has changed dramatically since Ryan was last a scout. For the last 3 or few years, Ryan has spoke of the talent he assembled, before each season, and said he thought they were rosters that could compete. Of course, the comeback could be that he was lying to protect ticket sales and team interest. But, the moves he made were suggestive of him believing what he said, not of a rebuilding team. Based on that, I think his ability to evaluate talent has probably fallen pretty far over the years.- 68 replies

What are you basing your opinion of Ryan as "easily a top 30 to 50 talent evaluator" on? I'm not saying he's not, I guess I don't even know how to evaluate that, just curious why you think he is.- 68 replies

Article: Intro To The Offseason
Mr. Brooks replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good luck getting Mollie on board with evidence based decisions. -
The Gophers would be 9-0 with a mediocre QB, you are correct on that. As it stands, we have no chance of beating Wisconsin with Leidner as QB, so it doesn't really matter what we do against Nebraska. Leidner has some wins against crappy competition. He hasn't won many big games. What is his record against Wisconsin and Iowa? One win combined, I believe? And they have yet to beat anyone this season.

Thank you Jimmer. There seems to be a disconnect between what our offense actually is, and what perception of it is. I get that the offense is not add bad as the pitching, but middle to bottom third in the league definitely leaves plenty of room for improvement.

Another game with the Gophers desperately trying to overcome their 5th year senior's awful QB play.
-
That would be a valid excuse if Leidner was a Sophomore and was putting up below average numbers. He's a 5th year senior (don't leaders make those around them better? ), putting up laughably terrible numbers. There are plenty of programs around the country that don't have 4 and 5 star wide receivers, and yet their QB is still able to put up at least mediocre numbers. Good QB'S throw their receivers open by throwing it to a spot as soon as the receiver breaks. Leidner doesn't do that, he looks for a guy to be open before he'll throw it. He also misses badly a few times every game.
-
It's a bit more nuanced than your last paragraph. There are a limited number of roster spots. You have to take into account the production could get by giving someone else that roster spot. If Mauer can give you 1 WAR, but a guy making the league minimum can give you 1.5 or more WAR from that roster spot, then to me it's a better use of resources cut Mauer and give that spot to the guy making the league minimum.

Leidner through 7 starts: 107/186 (57.5%), 1274 yards (182/gm.), 5 td, 5 int, and the lowest passer rating of his career. Those aren't even mediocre numbers, those are awful. And this from our 5th year senhor with a laughably easy schedule. I get their may not be better options this year, but let's not pretend he's been anything but awful.

Is there a reason you cut out the part where I went on to disclaim that you'd have to spend the $500k league minimum replace them?

And nobody is arguing that they should be dumped if there is still hope that they can return to form. Some of just hope that if the day comes that that hope is no longer realistic, that they aren't given a roster spot just because they are under contract.

Actually many businesses do operate that way (spreading out costs over multiple years). It's pretty common for a company to invest in an expensive piece of equipment and spread that cost over the expected life of the equipment. And, in Minnesota at least, it's legal to do it that way for tax reporting.

The money is already spent. Nobody is asking to spend someone else's money. It's already spent. Which would be a better use of resources? A) Stubbornly rostering a player who gives you 0.5 WAR because you don't want to cut your losses. Or Giving that roster spot to a guy making the league minimum gives you 1.5 WAR. Now, I get there is no guarantee that the guy who gets that roster spot will be better enough to justify the extra 500k, but then again Chief didn't claim as much, just that it should be considered if there is a better player.

I like Dougie Alphabet, and I actually wanted him to be the hire last time. But that was under the old country club rules. I think Falvey is going to aim a lot higher.

I think the days of Mauer selling even a single ticket are long gone. A handful of guys in baseball sell tickets by themselves, if that. If the new FO is putting fan input ahead of actual evaluation then nothing matters because we are doomed.

I had forgotten that the Vikings can pick up the 5th year option on Teddy. I was thinking that next year would be the last year of his deal- in which case you'd want to recoup a draft pick before losing him for nothing. But yeah, with that 5th year option, it makes sense to keep him 1 more year, unless someone offers you a 1st round pick. The one possible fly in the ointment there is that the Vikings would have to guarantee that option before they know if he's fully recovered.

I don't see how you keep both Bradford and Bridgewater. Barring a major injury to Bradford, I think Teddy has probably played his last game in purple.

Article: Discussing Domestic Abuse
Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess I don't understand why a person would fear those things (independence, not needing them) unless it's because they look at that person as their property. If you view your SO as an equal person, those are attributes you actually seek out. I've witnessed a lot of men who are extremely verbally abusive towards their wife/girlfriend and they had a lot of variables. But the one thing that they always had in common, every time, was that the abuser spoke to and about the victim as though they viewed them as property. So yeah that is anecdotal, but that is what I've witnessed so that is why I've formed the opinions that I have. The reason I translate that into thinking they can't (most of the time) be rehabilitated is because if you view something as your property, you are never going to have empathy towards them, never. As, I said before, they may "fake it", because they don't want to get into trouble, or because they don't want friends or family to know about it, or whatever the reason. But I'm not sure empathy is something that can be taught to an adult. You either have it or you don't. Regarding the juvenile justice system, I should have been more specific. Their credence is rehabilitation over punishment, though you are right that isn't always the case in practice.- 37 replies
