Nobody was going to pay him $8- $9 million next year, which is what he would have gotten in Arbitration. Now, any team that would have been interested can just sign him for $3- $4 million and not have to give up a prospect. Of course, we might have been able to get a C prospect if we kicked back a few million bucks.

Mr. Brooks replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd take a chance on Gomez if he can be had for 2 years or less. He has the most upside of anyone on the FA market, and if I'm looking for a flip candidate I'm looking for upside.- 28 replies

Article: A Look At The Free Agent Catcher Market
Mr. Brooks replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Who were the guys discussing him? Some of the old school guys think pitch framing is a hoax, so that might explain that. If you take away his elite pitch framing, then he probably is a mediocre defender. However, I consider pitch framing to be the most important aspect to catching, followed by shutting down the run game, so in my eyes, I'd consider Castro very good defensively. -
Is one of those tools throwing a football? I don't even think Mitch knows where the ball will end up half the time. It's downright cringe worthy. QB? No chance. I could see him catching onto a practice squad as an H-back maybe. Which is where he should be playing in college as well.

Article: A Look At The Free Agent Catcher Market
Mr. Brooks replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There are people here who can answer pretty definitively, and I hope we hear from them, but I think Garver has already surpassed average as a receiver. I don't know why you assume they will want the absolute best defensive catcher with zero regard for a bat. You should always look at the balance between bat and defense. They (Cleveland) did try to get a catcher at the deadline, and couldn't make a deal. As for not wanting Suzuki. One, none of us know if they made an offer. And two, Suzuki might have been the worst defensive catcher since LeCroy last year, so not wanting Suzuki doesn't automatically mean they won't accept anything less than A+ defensively. It could just mean that they at least want C+ or something defensively. Also, after last year, I don't think Turner is even so much as an afterthought at this point. He won't be added to the 40 man, and Seth didn't even have him in his top 30 prospects. Turner is not an option next year. If your theory is get the best defender regardless of any minimum standard with the bat, then I think they would just bring Butera in on a 1 year deal. -

Can I ask what you are using to base your opinion of Garver on? It's my understanding that he's pretty solid defensively. -
Another game the Gophers easily win with even an average QB. They'd be 10-0 right now, if they didn't have to try to overcome their terrible 5th year senior QB every week. Huge stain on the Kill legacy. This schedule was likely our 1 chance to win the Big10.

Firing Terry Ryan seems like a huge waste of time if this is the plan. I don't see how anyone can think this team is Soto and Tejada away from a World Series run.

Mr. Brooks replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah I agree to a degree about the rankings. I've said in some of the trade Dozier and/or Erv threads that I think rankings are overrated. But, there is a reason why Alabama and Ohio State, etc. are always in the national title conversation, and they aren't passing on 4 or 5 star recruits. -

I agree there can be a bias, but using the tiny sample of AFL stats tells us absolutely nothing. -

I think we might have unrealistic expectations of Garver at this point. If he projected as a catcher with good defense and an above average bat, wouldn't be be a top 100 prospect? That doesn't mean he can't, of course, many prospects go on to outperform their projections, but I don't think he's a guy we should worry about blocking. He's not a Joe Mauer, or even Wilson Ramos level prospect. -

After couple of thoughts on this. 1) Baseball is not a sport in which rookies come up and play very well often. Some do, sure, but not the majority. Often you need to give a guy plenty of opportunity and experience before they make the necessary adjustments at this level. How are guys supposed to make those adjustments if they are expected to play well immediately to earn the experience? 2) It's not that simple. Sometimes you have a stubborn manager (cough, cough) who refuses to play a young player unless forced to by multiple injuries. -

These are human beings and have many different reasons for choosing to sign with a team in free agency. Sometimes (though certainly not always), it's mainly about the money. Unless you know him personally, there is no way you can make a declarative statement like this. -
Article: Derek Falvey, Thad Levine Era Begins
Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That still doesn't answer my question on why he'd have input on trades though. Am I the only one who finds it ironic that Mollie rips on front offices that meddle with the manager, while the same article suggests he should have input in front office decisions?- 68 replies

I love how there is seemingly no middle ground between gushing over Mollie to no end, roasting him in the press conference. Just because some of us are alarmed by the lengths they went to praise him, doesn't mean we expected them to rip him.- 68 replies

Yep, and Mollie will be one of the first voices Falvey gets input on when deciding trades?? And Falvey will have no input on players roles on the field? Talk about total buzz kill. Man I hope this is pure lipservice.- 68 replies

No organization is going to stand in the way of a vertical move. So yeah, they aren't going to be able to pluck someones Assistant GM to come be ours, but if the best candidate hasn't reached that height yet, then we could hire them. I'm sure there are a few very bright people here, and yes they should get a chance to stay. Of course, we wouldn't be in this mess if everyone was good at their job, so some guys will have to be cut loose. I already said I understand giving him a year, and also said that if it turns out he's the very best candidate, then so be it. This isn't some kind of witch hunt, they got to where they are, performance wise, for a reason.- 68 replies

Article: Derek Falvey, Thad Levine Era Begins
Mr. Brooks replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah I'm not a big fan of it either. I want them to try to fill every position with the very best available candidate. If that just so happens to be the guy already there, that's fine. But, it would be quite a coincidence if that were the case. But, I realize you can't turnover an entire front office in one offseason. So, I'm hoping he's just hanging around in an advisory role, with no real important responsibilities, until they can evaluate him and go from there.- 68 replies

Correct, the way to get them is before they figure it out at the MLB level. Hopefully the new FO will bring in some talent evaluators that can find a guy or two that just need a change of scenery or an overhauled delivery or something. It can be done.- 68 replies

1) Yes, all those young guys need to play. Pencil them in and see who sinks and who swims. That is part of rebuilding. A rebuild is not complete until most of your team can be written in with ink. We don't have very many spots that can be written in ink yet. 2) On Gordon, I don't even consider a guy as being on the MLB radar until they've proven it at AA. That is not a knock on Gordon. You have to crawl before you can walk. But, I wouldn't even consider a prospect as a potential solution at a position until they prove it at AA. 3)Yes, Sano needs to play 3B every single day for at least a full season, I would do 2 full seasons. Luckily we are a rebuilding team, so we can afford to give him time over there. 4) You keep qualifying it with "complete rebuild". Well of course, nobody would claim the cupboard is completely bare. That doesn't mean we are not rebuilding. Yes, we have a foundation. But if a tornado comes and knocks your house down to the foundation- it's time to rebuild.- 68 replies
