Do not want to bad mouth the new kid but I don’t think I saw average stuff (SWR has average stuff)……not for a starter. To me, he looked like a more energetic presence that would get Joey Wentz’ innings in the near term. Slider/cutter too often looked like a slower fastball……not much movement. He shows guts/resilience/energy but the talent didn’t appear to be there IMO. 4 innings & 5 earned is not a positive debut. Need Matthews back in couple weeks &/or Ober. Can’t see Adams in more than one more start……”long guy” role. All-star break has never been more needed! 5-2 over remaining games up to the Break gets Team to .500 ………🤞

2 years at $19M is Top End in my opinion…….can’t let the 2 HR game cloud logic too much. He’s historically good against LH pitching and he can play defense - usually misses chunks of season w/injury (knock on wood) & this year he’s hit RH pitching better and with others injuries, he’s been played more than anticipated. Wallner needs to get his act together or their may need to be a knew approach for ‘26 OF corps.

He’s been wearing some heat or stimulation wrap on his back since ‘23……..baseball players stats are ebbs & flows……..Bader was great ….. not really good for a month …… stinging the ball lately. CC was brutal through most of May ……. had his Average up to .260 a few days ago ……. has had a rough few games. If he hits .270 going forward (his typical career mark) he’ll be near .265 for the Season. His power is lacking - XBH totals could use a jolt after the Break! He’s playing consistent SS so I don’t really see him as being a glaring issue, especially not going forward.

Bader, as unfair as it may sound, has most of 3 months to continue to prove his worth & needs to continue to be a positive contributor. If he hits a lull down the stretch the Team may extend their side of the Option and Bader may accept for continuity and $$ certainty? Twins may also move on to youth if he’s borderline? He seems to have found something at the plate in ‘25 ……. his defense is as was advertised. I didn’t like his signing, and while he’s limited v. RH pitching, I’d like him around in ‘26! He seems to be having fun in Mpls. - need to win a bit more to keep his interest going forward.

Varland was cruising and don’t want to burn two best guys in a tie game …….gotta score in 8th to see Duran in 9th. Not always the case but Varland threw 2 innings with 19 total pitches. Don’t think that on July 4th their usage has anything to do with trade deadline moves……just trying to set up best opportunity to win the Series by having them available next two days, IMO……..hoping Team can score in 9th after Lou goes out & holds them.

My comment clearly said “…..,after they got to 2 runs……move runner to 2B with no outs….”. I understand the reluctance to bunt to move runs into scoring position based on statistics - real data. However, the average runs scored from FIRST with NO OUTS is averaged across every situation, all teams, and includes 1-2-3-4-5 hitters being at the plate in that situation as well as the bottom of the order. Bader has very good speed, and is batting 9th for a reason……..bunt & move the runner and put pressure on the defense with your speed. It’s not hindsight if one wants a player to do it in real time. Wallner bunting is never a good idea…..not sure where that came from? Bunting a player to 3B is never a good idea unless Team needs one run in bottom of extra innings…… That strategy was never stated nor inferred. Not sure where you come up with the twisted view of the point I was trying to make? Work on the comprehension skills perhaps?

They had just won 8 straight - they had two less wins than the Twins. We aren’t very good either. As a separate thought/comment, how can anyone feel good about what the offense was able to produce? At least 3 times, after getting to 2 runs, Team had a guy on first base ready to be moved to 2B with a bunt to add an insurance run and it never happened. Strikeouts and a couple double plays later, we still had 2 runs. Harrison Bader (regressing for a month) batting 9th with Top of order behind him …….he has good speed……..no outs & runner on 1B ……… BUNT! I protect Rocco about 90% of the time but this, to me, was idiotic! …………Happened 2 other times in last 4 innings. When is Wallner going to St. Paul?

Completely agree Mike!! The Manager isn’t holding the offense back to scoring 2 or less in 29 of 85 games. That’s pathetic execution by the guys in the box. Why the hell does anyone care or comment about pitching from the starter or decisions by the Manager when the Team gives up only 2 runs and has only 2 hits? The hitters generally suck as a group!1 Correa is close to .700 OPS and hitting near .260 - after his first 6 weeks, he’s brought his numbers up and will continue to do so. Castro had a pretty blah first 2 months and he’s really contributing. Buxton, nothing needs to be said, pretty good! Bader is regressing, expected after his first 6 weeks. Lee - France - Larnach - Jeffers all OK to positive results……..not much heavy lifting day to day though. LEWIS - WALLNER, practically nothing from them to date. Arguably, the #3 & #4 spots going into the season……..Wallner may need to go to St. Paul again soon? Could really use Keaschall’s energy & talent ….,,hope he’s back before end of July!

I don’t buy the “Ober’s injured” narrative at this point. He may have a physical issue but that isn’t what makes a guy throw 4-5 unacceptable pitches in a 90 pitch outing. He gave up at least 3 hits on good pitches that hitters just got lucky on by getting the bat in the ball. So, fortune hasn’t been with him lately. Also, hitters are not missing his mistakes - at all. Yesterday, for the most part, his fastball and changeup-up looked to be working in concert. His slider was up and down and lack of command and lack of movement with that pitch was most of his problems. He hung a change for a homer. …….. I just don’t think an IL stint helps with command……particularly when the command issues are 6-10% of the pitches thrown. All pitchers miss spots repeatedly in outings, Ober just doesn’t have the stuff to miss by much and it’s eating him up right now. IL or skipped start prior to All-Star break makes sense for mental re-set if nothing else.

The best record in baseball is ahead of them in the Division - Tigers. There are probably 4-5 Teams ahead of them for Wild Card but none more than 4 or 5 games. Not sure why winning the Division is their only path to the Playoffs, with any respectability? IMO, if there’s embarrassment, it’s from not making the Playoffs at all.

I think 2 outs at the time? If Vazquez gets to 2B - pinch runner with two outs may make sense. No need to get Jeffers out there for an inning if Kiersey goes in to be at 1B with 2 outs. Tighter game and extra run is critical, probably yes. Why is Kiersey on the Roster? That’s a separate, good question. He’s 7 for 67 with a .143 OBP. He’s not Rickey on the bases and not Clemente nor Mays in the OF…………..w/o having those traits, his .107 BA should have him demoted immediately for nearly any other viable option at the plate! Team has 5 other options in the OF on roster.

LEE - I was not a real promoter of him 6 weeks ago - too much soft contact, no power, slow, etc. - have been disappointed after all the hype. His defense shines at times - certainly good enough for every day player going forward. His HR potential is showing with experience but more importantly he’s hitting line drives. His average is up to .280. Gotta give him credit, he seems to be figuring it out and from both sides of the plate!! That said, he should be fined and the 1B coach should too for the ridiculous base running after his line drive to Right Center - France (probably slowest starter) went first to third and the throw was made there………when the CF is making a play there Lee has to at least be 3/4 steps around 1B…..at least. The ball rolls away from third baseman, slowly, maybe 20 feet. Lee should have back pedaled into 2B - I was astonished he was still at 1B. Broad angle replay shows him heading back to the bag at 1B as the ball is in the air to 3B. What is the coach doing/watching? Terrible baseball by them both!!! Clemens gets HBP so it’s never an issue - doesn’t make it right. Castro walk, stolen base, advance on wild pitch in same game……. Buxton walk, stolen base, advance on FC, scores on sac bunt in same game…… It’s not the Manager’s fault Lee didn’t get to 2B it’s guys doing there job right whether they have speed or not - base coaching with some awareness and energy - do your jobs

Yes, Nitpicking hindsight. 5 2/3 of zero runs is enough for a guy trying to build confidence. He couldn’t get the last guy out - Numerous pitches with 2 strikes and 2 outs, guy hit a hit……….don’t need a fatigue HR there. to the next guy. Lefty comes in & gets them to PH and gets them to the 7th. Hoping Festa could have gotten out of that in 6th AND pitched another inning is a real stretch …….MORE could be “hoped for” from every starter in every game.

Clemens has paid off as a pretty nice find! Plays 3 positions as necessary and hitting with power in fairly limited opportunities. Apparently his bat speed is up this year and he said he couldn’t attribute to anything in particular a number of weeks ago when asked. I just saw replay of his opposite field HR on a spinner slider from last night and Plouffe’s comment was “…….,,,you gotta be some kind of strong to do that……” ………..not insinuating anything here but my mind did drift to Dad’s tendency to put PED’s to use. Wishing Kody good fortune going forward!

Falvey: Minnesota Twins Are Not Focused On Selling
JD-TWINS replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Who are the “expiring deals” to be traded that bring back players of value? Coulombe & Castro & who else? ………….. maybe keep them and work on re-signing? The vast majority of the Roster’s good players are arbitration guys. Just don’t see Correa nor Buxton going anywhere. I guess one could try to trade Paddack but with what kind of return? ………,I think the moves probably are with younger talent and more than likely after the season & hopefully with new ownership driving the bus. -
Falvey: Minnesota Twins Are Not Focused On Selling
JD-TWINS replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Does anyone really think they will trade Joe Ryan? How many Clubs are going to trade for a guy (regardless of his performance in the current year) that makes $37M? Gotta be a list of maybe 2-3 Teams (no bigger) when looking at SS position specifically. Then add in this year’s performance………..,doesn’t seem possible. Teams would be interested in Stewart - Jax - Duran - Coulombe & probably Castro at the deadline……….maybe even Vazquez as a veteran depth piece behind an every day catcher for a Playoff bound team. Jax or Duran could fetch some value return but the others are just brining back hopeful prospects. -
Castro, while termed “a Utility guy” plays/starts essentially everyday somewhere. His growth offensively (apparent or real?) seems to be continuing. His contract is not expensive & if they could extend him at same $7M for 2-3 years it would be a good move.

I am an eternal optimist relative to the Twins - they are 2 1/2 out of a Wildcard spot and cannot play any worse……..that said they are also 12th in a 15 team League. That’s brutal!!! All winter I, among many others, said the offense needed one SOLID addition ………France has plugged a hole - Bader has plugged a hole and then some - bullpen (w/o Wentz - Alcala - Bride’s & Funderburk’s innings, has good stats) - starters have been serviceable at the very least. The number of games at 3 runs or less is insurmountable. Bride & Keirsey on our roster for extended periods is embarrassing, regardless of other’s health. Keaschall & Lewis and some emergence of a reasonable output from Wallner can get things going but time is running short. If things don’t get to .500 or better in 3-4 weeks even I will have to punt. I still think, am hopeful, that “buyer” at deadline is logical with 1/3 of the season remaining at that point.
-
I think “execution”…….. in this streak there’s a 16 run game - 16 run game - 17 run game - 9 run game……….while it’s nothing to be proud of, these 4 contests skew the last 15 games and associated ERA. Wentz is a scrap heap guy that will be gone soon if he isn’t already and him, coupled with Bride had to give 15 of those runs in 2-3 games. Not great but not all bad.
-
Can’t disagree too much. As a fan and being faithful to the talent, I feel worse things were said in April & May about the Club……..and then they were 6-7 games over and in 2nd place. I am not relying on nor expect another 10 game winning streak but they are 2 games under and they’ve got 76 games behind them with 86 to go. I think that with Keaschall and Lewis they actually have a chance to play the last 70 games at 10 games over .500. If they can muster .500 by the break they will be in the mix or can be…….if they are 5 under at the break there could be some moves late next month. Not very likely though as our relievers will only bring limited value in return. OWNERSHIP being in flux doesn’t help the Roster, Players frame of mind, nor the fans level of optimism. It’s a problem!!

It is difficult to watch a Team that cannot seem to bunt in any situation, ever. A piece of the game is missing. The inability to steal bases or attempt it is a more glaring Roster flaw……if they were top 8 in HR it could be tolerable, but slow and impotent is a problem! Gotta be real though - creating problems from game situations just to be able to fill more words in the article is equally frustrating. Bader on 1B with one out and Wallner at the plate & he lines out……..if Bader runs it has Zero impact in the positioning of the 2B or him “moving”……with LH bat up the SS is almost directly behind 2B and covering ever time with any LH batter…..baseball 101. No need to create more of a stir with the Team’s shortcomings with additional strife about their play & how “things might have been better.”
-
There are 15 Teams in the AL & over half of them have a better defensive CF than Byron Buxton………..to me, that’s hard to imagine. France is filling a big void at 1B after Santana signed back with Cleveland. His offense (solid not spectacular) and his defense has to make him one of the Top Shelf in FA “value signings” in all of baseball at $1M!

I would go deeper and say Correa, while not supplying any punch in the line-up, has been tolerable to this point……with the assumption that he’ll continue to work his way back to his norm. Lewis & WALLNER are the two that are significantly underperforming. I had expectations for Wallner entering the season. I was at the game yesterday, and his fluid batting average, before his lone hit in 4th PA was close to .200. He should be providing offense……..he’s not, at all. Clemens has 99 AB’s & 7 HR’s & 25 K’s…. 12 total XBH. Wallner has 111 AB’s & 5 HR & 36 K’s ……13 total XBH. Clemens was a DFA free agent pick-up……to me, Wallner should be out performing Clemens by a fair bit! Lewis, back by August 1st? …..and then what to expect??
