Those others have nothing to do with an upbeat write up about how Josh Bell dug himself out of a hole & how he’s willing to pass on info to guys 7-10 years younger - that’s it. I think it’s OK to presume it won’t hurt, and that not every opinion writers share, whether it’s their’s or what they’ve heard, should be met with absolute pessimism. You do you.

I don’t understand the $20M comment? That would net 3 veterans ($3M - $6M - $11M) with decent track record. …….. Orze has a spot I’d think……… Topa - Sands - Funderburk (all familiar, none great but all “capable”)………they have a half dozen young guys that have been starters to supplement. How do we know it wouldn’t be a good PEN?

Minnesota Twins Have Shown Interest in Seranthony Dominguez
JD-TWINS replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Points on Duran - Jax - Varland are spot on……I think limiting Festa’s innings coming off this serious shoulder issue makes perfect sense. I’m not sure if it’s better to have him with Abel in St Paul to protect him early, as a starter, or if he should just get moved to a PEN role? Not utilizing good production in the Show & wasting innings at AAA probably is not best scenario for Twins. Controlled innings a couple times per week from the PEN role seems right. I am in the vast minority but I think Matthews should get serious consideration for the Closer role……….if they try this, Festa has to stay in rotation depth. Dominguez is a worthwhile guy along with Coulombe. (agree, with some pairing of FA relievers) Blend in Festa with those two guys. Orze - Funderburk - Topa - Sands………..Morris - Lewis - Raya - Adams - Klein as additional fillers, this seems to be a collection of guys that can get things done, generally, through the year. -
I assume they play better between innings games - play better music - have nice summer evening weather - give away some Coors??? Don’t think it has anything to do with quality of baseball.

My opinion/point is that I’m just setting the bar for “average” performances. There’s no serendipity expected in my comments……..it’s all stuff that should be baseline. I’m not suggesting the Team will have 3-4 All Stars. Maybe I wasn’t clear - I do not expect, nor should anyone, think that the Twins are going to have a bunch of great years from players but I do think it’s reasonable to expect guys to revert to their norms. Certainly, not everyone’s performances will be positive. I just think that if they get repeat decent output from a handful of guys and another half dozen revert to their norm, Team can be competitive in the A.L. Central. Not having Kiersey - Gasper - Vazquez - Juilen stepping into the batter’s box should also be a big step in the right direction. Go Twins!

I could think like chicken little - yes. That’s a drag and essentially what 90% of the TD commenters already have covered. 2 years ago the Team could “trade anyone” but Brooks Lee, according to people here. Thinking he may be able to elevate his offense from OPS+ of 76 up to OPS+ of 91 isn’t a huge ask. Is it guaranteed, he’ll no. In ‘22-‘24 Lopez threw 180 - 194 - 185 innings respectively……….injuries in ‘25…….. am assuming his “normalcy” - not Blue Sky. Ober has thrown 144 - 178 - 146 innings over last 3 seasons ………165 doesn’t seem lofty IMO. Expecting 175 innings from Ryan is what the Twins, or any other organization that would trade for him, should expect. I don’t see the rub? The PEN is a crapshoot, but if there’s an effort to displace Sands, etc. from the back end of the PEN, with a couple OK free agents and some talented youth, it has a good chance of being at least middle if the pack. Not predicting Top 5. Larnach producing in a platoon is historically proven. Wallner IS a flip of the coin but it’s tough to hit .202 in back to back years with his bat speed & prior success. He may hit a buck ninety the way he looked in ‘25? Lewis, who knows? Thinking he should be or has a real shot at just above average, this doesn’t seem to be a view that anyone that watches baseball wouldn’t concur with. Jeffers/Buxton ……. do people, in general, think either will collapse in ‘26? I’m not dreaming about Roden or Outman or Clemens or Julien to contribute at all!!! They are all a serious stretch to make the roster. Or nothing might work out and they win 61 games and everyone boycotts Target Field ……., I could take that point of view and then commit hara-kiri.

I guess the rationale is Martin & Keaschall build on ‘25 performances and play 130 games instead of 40-50. Lopez is healthy and throws 185 innings. Ryan throws 175 innings. Ober throws 165 innings. SWR throws 150 innings………..they commit some upside young arms (3-4) to the PEN - outside guys that are already relievers - Adams & Klein don’t count in this mix……. Morris - Prielipp - Matthews or similar & Orze - Topa - Funderburk - Sands ……. with two affordable FA relievers, the PEN is reasonable. Buxton stays healthy and produces near ‘25 results………same with Jeffers. Lee lifts OPS+ to 90 or better. Lewis & Wallner get back to mildly above average guys…. not stars ……. Larnach quits hitting against LH pitching and his numbers reflect this change. Bell is able to meet expectations of a just above average guy. If these guys elevate, as a group, some more than others, they can get to .500 or a bit better.

Varland had more playoff appearances than anyone else in post-season history……… that, and everything said by anyone that was asked in the Toronto organization, it seems they thought he was pretty good. That said, I think the “risk” for the upside Rojas brings, was worthwhile. The results Rojas brings will determine who wins the trade IMO.

Seems to me this set of stats are pretty easily explained away if he’s in the mix as one of the youngest players at these levels. He was 18 to start last summer. Not concerned - not guaranteeing success either. I just don’t see these stats as being very meaningful for his future until the end of ‘26 season.

5 Twins Prospect Storylines Set to Shape 2026
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
My pushback is that there are only 13 Roster Spots. Can’t just experiment with the MLB Club like it’s some laboratory or like it’s AAA. Always wanting 4/6 guys to “get a chance” is not a good way to approach running an organization. I understand the “want” & curiosity from a Fan’s perspective. Once a guy comes up some Veteran needs to be traded or released/DFA’d to create space. They are gone. Guys need to be ready or at least they need to have shown signs they are ready, other than some draft perspective from 2-3 years prior or some hot 45 days in MiLB. Martin - Larnach - Buxton - Wallner - Jeffers - Jackson - Lewis - Lee - Keaschall - Bell are 10 LOCKS for the roster omitting injuries……3 other spots open. I don’t love Kriedler/Arcia - Clemens - Gasper - Wagaman - Julien - Roden - Outman……..one could certainly make the case that at least 4 of these 8 guys have already played themselves off of any MLB roster! I DO NOT think these guys, nor any of the 2-3 fringe guys in the 10 listed above, are blocking prospects at AAA. The AAA guys need to force their way on to the roster in the Show with their play……..not because “they deserve a chance”. Culpepper - Rodriguez - Gonzalez - Jenkins are all guys I would expect to see prior to year end. The performance of guys in front of them in the Show, the Big Club’s record, and the AAA individual’s performance will all blend into who gets a look and when. I completely agree that the organization should be able to develop a 1B from current blah to OK defenders at current positions, that have shown the “hit tool”. Gonzalez - Keaschall - Jeffers - Lewis as well as numerous (2-3) others in MiLB are options.- 8 replies

To me, SWR’s stuff doesn’t warrant #2 starter talk. He’ll be age 25 through the ‘26 season, so still young. He’s had steady improvement though and if he can continue to refine his control “in the zone”, he is the #4 starter this year and forward. 2.2 WAR in ‘25 with only 111 innings pitched …….. 2.0 WAR in ‘24 in 133 innings. If the #4 starter can get to 150-160 innings & gives a 2.5 plus WAR it’s a good rotation! Emma “needs to play” at AAA and show he can remain healthy and productive for more than 4-6 weeks at a time! Moving or demoting a currently similar veteran bat to make room for Emma, & then to have him be hurt 15 days later doesn’t work!

A DH, to me, isn’t just a guy who may be defensively challenged or bad. He is supposed to “contribute” positively to the offense. Wallner hit .195 v. RH pitching in 2025. He had 22 HR & 21 singles & struck out in 34% of his AB’s ……. this is not sustainable output for ANY MLB hitter, let alone a DH. Larnach hit .254 with a .759 OPS v. RH pitching in 2025…… in a somewhat, “down year”.

Wallner hit .202 in ‘25. He had to have hit “better” v. RH pitchers - an assumption……..but he didn’t. .195 v. RH pitching & .224 v. LH pitching. .224 is sub-par and should not be commended as “good”. .195 is terrible and should be viewed as “terrible”. Why “want” to have him hit v. LH pitching? What’s the fascination? How about he hits .245 v. RH pitching and gets platooned 90% of the time v. LH pitching. This would be an extreme positive over ‘25. To me, Lee has to get his OPS+ up from 76 to 95 and he’ll be a sporadic contributor w/o the huge lulls. His ability to switch hit will always be a bit of a positive as well. With enough games played, between back issues, he has 20 HR potential.

I’m not a psychologist but my assumption is that it’s because he’s from Forrest Lake……..I’ve said here before, if he was from Kenosha, fans would have a completely different view of him. The local ties & sentimentality coupled with what they say in the movies, “girls (everyone) love the Big Fly”. How can a guy play sub-mediocre defense, admittedly with a big arm, and throw the ball all over the place and be seen as an OK outfield option for years to come? I’d live with the OF play but even more mystifying are the continual comments about how he had a down year at the plate in ‘25 but it was really “still productive”. He had 22 HR & only 40 RBI - really tough to accomplish ……… more HR than singles - an even more difficult feat. He struck out in 34% of his AB’s. He hit .202. …….. I do not equate this level of performance anywhere near productive/effective! He’s got talent! He’s earned a chance. If he can strike out 4-5% less and hit .240, he can be a real positive contributor. Actually staying healthy enough to play every day AND to hit well enough to not need to be sent AAA to fix things, would be a step in the right direction.

“…….Johan was also younger and had more minor league innings under his belt” ……… not really sure what this has to do with Prielipp being a reliever to start out in MLB? Btw, Johan was a Rule 5 pick up, correct, BUT he pitched from the PEN significant innings over his first FOUR seasons in MLB. He “pitched in” 117 games in his first four seasons with the TWINS and started only 41 of those games………. then went on to be a pretty solid starter.

I defer to your superior intellect oh wise one. I’m just trying to get past all the fray here at TD (with a success story) that Prielipp can’t be “wasted” in the PEN. He’s shown little durability to date and isn’t getting any younger. The probability of him being a starter, for the Twins, ahead of Abel - Festa - Bradley - Rojas is very low. I think it could be beneficial for the Team & Prielipp to only have him throw 75 innings or less and to let him go 100% in those innings out of a relief role. I could care less if he ever starts another game.

Keaschall learns to bunt effectively or at least develops that skill. he could hit .280. I like his bat to ball skills and his energy…….having him play 135-145 games will be a big shot in the arm. Ober, control in the zone is the key. His fastball doesn’t get punished that much, even at 89 MPH. His sliders up or change-ups that stay in the zone when meant to dive out of the zone, they get rocked. His stats with guys on base were really elevated - seems that throwing from the stretch changed his delivery. Maybe health related? This needs to get fixed! PEN: Traded for Orze - Funderburk, Topa, Sands are all OK middle inning guys. Need a couple FA signings that can bolster middle innings through 8th inning. (Coulombe & Seranthony Dominguez) To me, Matthews gets moved to Closer. 🤞 Need 2-3 young guys to be able to supplement/support these 7 guys. Prielipp - Morris - Adams - Raya - Festa(?) - Klein. It seems the physical capabilities will be there WITH a couple signings. I do think that LaTroy Hawkin’s experience in every PEN role will help him support guys with routines and mindset day to day through the 162 game grind. SEEMS like a pretty reasonable solution.
-
Your “take” is ridiculous! Matt Wallner - Brooks Lee - Royce Lewis ALL underperforming is why the Twins sucked in ‘25……..along with starting pitcher injuries. Bader - France - Coulombe had zero to do with not being competitive. The 57 game win pace after July 31 was due to Bader - Castro - FRANCE - Varland - Duran - Jax - Coulombe all being traded for youth. They then became non-competitive.
-
Agreed on Prielipp! I pointed out here a few weeks ago that Johan Santana started in the PEN & he worked out pretty well.

Jeffers being valued less as an asset than Prielipp or Lee seems odd. If offering Jeffers in the trade market, regardless of remaining control, he would get more of a return than either of those guys, IMO. That’s value as an asset.

He won a gold glove and was an average hitter, worked out well ……..it’s depth move with Arcia, period. If he’s on the roster it’s because circumstances deem it necessary - not because he’s making X $$. I too, as another reader here stated, think that he more than likely has an “out” if his agent can find him an MLB deal ……… certainly after June 1.
