The idea that everybody, except for one or two guys, is a role player can lead to inconsistent play. If you want a player to be regular player who gets 500 at bats, he has to play. If everyone is platoon player, they really will never get enough at bats to be effective in all situations. "He can't hit lefty's so he doesn't hit against them . He doesn't hit against lefty's so he can't hit lefty's," It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. A regular lineup with regular players has a greater chance of being consistent over the long run. The Margot thing is beyond malpractice. Idiocy.

i would imagine that it is possible to mismanage a game more than this one but I really don't see how.

The point I would make is this: Does the manager give his team the best chance to win the game using the talent of the players he has to work with? If Tom Kelly had not been a victim of the Pohlad's cost cutting in the 90's and 00's he would have had a much better record. When his team was competitive in a game/season, he consistently out managed the other team. Paul Molitor did the same though realistically he wasn't given much of a chance since his tenure was so brief. Does Rocco do this? It would be difficult for me to maintain that he meets that criteria in his game management. Too many decisions that leave me to ask. "Why is he doing that?" Much to formulaic in his approach with a lack of feel for the game.

The big point is using Duran on Saturday with a 6 run lead in the 9th with other options available. Back to back days don't seem to work very well for a number of the bullpen pitchers.

It's pretty clear that many relievers just can't pitch on back to back days regardless of the number of pitches thrown the previous day. The process of warming up on consecutive days takes too much out of them.

Week in Review: Persevering Through Pain
Pat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It just gets tiresome to see the the same thing: A parade of relievers comes in, one has a blow up inning and walks a couple of guys and gives up a bomb and it's a loss, Another game, everybody is great and it's a win. So the only way to win is to expect perfection for all of the pitchers every game. That is unrealistic. The more pitchers that are used the more likely it is that one of them is going to fail. Multiple inning relievers??? Nope! One inning and you are done with only five pitches thrown. Amazing.- 21 replies

Twins Taking “Walks Will Haunt” Mantra to New Levels
Pat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is no defense for a walk. Unfortunately, too often, a walk is followed by a home run because the pitcher groves one to avoid another walk. It's the combination of walks and home runs that is especially damaging. I would take solo homers over walks followed by home runs any time.- 5 replies

Make it Official! Twins 3, Nationals 2: Stars and Sausages
Pat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This quick hook thing just gets old. One of the reasons pitchers don't get through a lineup three times is because they never do it. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy: '" They can't do it because they don't do it and they don't do it because they can't do it." A perfect box!- 34 replies

Mariners 10, Twins 6: Bullpen Blows Up
Pat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am just tired of the constant parade of pitchers out of the bullpen. To expect perfection night after night from a plethora of pitchers is so unrealistic. All it takes is for any one of them to have a blow up inning and you can put a "L" on the board.- 73 replies

The Twins Are Killing Their Brand, and It's Brutal to Watch
Pat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since the Twins are a private business and not publicly owned or traded, there really is no way of knowing if they are really making or losing money beyond their claims which could be self serving to fulfill a narrative that they wish to create, Anyone who owns and runs their own business knows that there are real losses and then there are "paper" losses which are used to drive down income/profits. All the farmers who live around me never turn a "real' profit at the end of the year, yet they manage to drive $80,000 four wheel drive pickups and spend the winter in Florida. The same principle applies to the Twins. -
As I read all these updates here appear to be the most common statements: "[Fill in the name] went down swinging." "[Fill in the name]" was called out on strikes."

This one dimensional, "all or nothing " approach is bound to lead to extended periods of futility. When all the team does is sit around and wait for pitches that they can drive out of the ball park, it is sort of inevitable that this is going to happen. What will take place is that you will have games that are bombs away followed by games where little happens beyond strikeouts. As long as this is the organization's approach to hitting, we might as well get used to seeing this.

Mickey was my coach twice at the Twins Fantasy Camp. He was a complete riot and and made the games so fun. He had a million stories and they were hilarious. There is a draft at the camp to make up the teams for the week. There are usually around 13 rounds. So Hatch says to me: "Pat! I had you in the 13th round, You went in the 10th!" I replied." Gee! Thanks, MIckey!!"

Imitation Game: 3 Ways the Twins Emulate the Rays
Pat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One of the problems with the use of the power bullpen is that they get used so much that they burn out and what had been a strength becomes a liability especially in the post season where the same relievers are used game after game and the hitters tend to catch up with them. A bullpen is not a substitute for quality starting pitching. Of course, the problem is the availability of starting pitching either home grown, via trade, or free agency.- 60 replies

I am more concerned about what they are going to do with the money that they received in this deal. The foremost reason for cutting payroll was the lack of a TV deal. Now that they have it, even though the amount is secret, what is the plan? Just pocket the money and call it profit? Their payroll is below the mid point already before any of the big free agents still available are signed. It is hardly the way to increase demand for a product by scaling back investment in that very same product especially after a successful 2023 campaign. It appears that we have seen this movie before.

The Twins Are Placing a Clear Focus on Intangible Traits
Pat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It only takes one or two disgruntled guys to sink a team. Look what happened when the Twins traded Tom Brunansky to the Cardinals for Tommy Herr in 1988. Herr pretty much destroyed the chemistry in the clubhouse and even though the Twins won more games in 1988 than they did in1987, they were never really in it after the trade. Every body needs to grab an oar if the boat is to move.- 54 replies
