  1. Sano is a monster. But, there are games, and you can see it from CF, when he just cannot hit the outside curve/slider. For whatever reason. What goes up, must come down. We hope he continues to make adjustments.
  2. If Buxton can hit .240 with decent pop, given the young talent the Twins have in Kepler, Polanco, Garver, Rosario, Sano, they will make some noise in MLB playoffs. Add one more quality starter to Berrios and Santana and you have a way to win some series, well, if there is a bullpen of course.
  3. The end is near for Phil Hughes. If he can't generate swings and misses with his fastball, he's done. But, good article. The Twins finally generating some young pitching, after how many long years? The cumulative return from Denard Span and Ben Revere trades = one year of May? And, maybe Busenitz.
  4. Rob Antony said on the radio that MLB contract reads that ownership and players must negotiate after three day/night double-headers scheduled in a season. I think Twins are already at four. They talked and the players wanted to get to the East Coast at a reasonable hour tonight. Fun to see two games back-to-back like that, first time here since 2001 for the Twinks.
  5. Escobar has some pop in his bat and is the team's best dancer and clown. I watched Adrianza closely today, and he is smooth in the field, fleet of foot and takes a good at bat. But he lacks pop. Agree that Twins don't need them both.
  6. Nothing wrong with getting a solid 6' 4" RH with good stuff and durability, who is ready in what?, two years. I take that all day long. Let him rise to his level and carry the Twins along. These kids stashed down in the minors for half a decade, they are fun to follow and even help this website, but, in the end, most of it is fantasy baseball. Arm injuries, suspensions, setbacks.... I want a competitive team. There was a RH from Vanderbilt over a decade ago, maybe not as big or talented. but he turned out Okay. Maybe not fair to compare, but it is a baseball pedigree school.
  7. Twins short on pitching is no surprise, especially after May went down. But, comparatively, Berrios, Santana, Santiago, Hughes and Mejia may be a better rotation than KC, Chicago and .... a few other teams. Bullpen is another matter. Gotta hope that Belisle and Pressley can hold it together or this will be a really long year in the late innings.
  8. There is a scenario in which this game gets played, and I hope, for once, they try to work with Mother Nature instead of running from her.
  9. Let us know when the game is post-poned and what time the double header starts tomorrow. thanks
  10. Bullpen is taking on water. Big league water. Duffey's stuff is okay, but only okay, as in @4.5 era. Pressley's fastball is hittable and his curve is not controllable. Ergo, not dependable. Breslow, unh-hnuh. You got Kintzler, Rogers and .... um, .... that's it. Starters, maybe, at best three dependable, if Berrios pans out. In other words, this season is now on life-support -- just on pitching. Bring up the kids, one-by-one, trial by fire and see who survives. It's the only way to prepare for the years ahead.
  11. I hope Twins don't decide this on a single weekend low radar reading at an underfunded southern university. Don't these scouts have their own velocity guns? And if the argument is that McKay is simply relying on "pitchability", and not raw stuff, I will ask how the James Hooey thing worked out for us.
  12. Parker needs to overcome the fact that if Berrios doctored last year, it was wildly ineffective, but this year it's working for him. What is he doing differently? That would be an interesting read.
  13. It was like pulling teeth to get the Twins Front Office to give Berrios this shot at starting, despite his AAA 1.19 ERA and all the rest of his dominating stats. Not to mention how out of options the Twins Front Office is in terms of starting pitching. Reality check: Are you guys over-thinking things just a little? Berrios is the top pitching prospect in AAA, and you had to think about whether to bring him up or not?
  14. Now one of two teams not having been shut out, after the Indians failed to score last night.
  15. One man's mediocrity, is another man's parity. Is the Central losing that many games across the other divisions? Like to think the Central is competitve, but I've been wrong pretty much the last decade, except the Royals.
  16. Great to see Sano raking early and showing considerable skill. But, to maintain that, the Twins will need protection for him, or the League will simply walk Sano. Or HBP when he irritates someone. Mauer? Uh, no. That's not protection. Kepler? Well, maybe, but he's batting up in the order. Castro? No. Sorry to say it. Polanco? Could be, he does hit from both sides, but, not exactly a long ball threat. As opposing manager, I would much rather pitch to Polanco. Rosario, Buxton and Dozier not good candidates for a wealth of reasons, mainly line-up construction. So, that leaves Grossman and Vargas, the two DHs. Not going to scare many pitchers out of walking Sano. No sure answer at this point, but without protection for Sano, no viable path for him to dominate, nor for the Twins to crack .500, IMHO. Make someone besides Sano beat you, that's going to be the approach.
  17. Working Adrianza out in LF at AAA. Stellar shortstop, so this is looking precarious for Danny Santana as a Minnesota Twin. May the best man win.
  18. How about Castro throwing out two guys tonight on balls in the dirt? And if that means little to you, I ask you to review the last two years and how often opposing baserunners took extra bases on passed balls, wild pitches and balls in the dirt. Small potatoes until it's a close game. And then the Twins lose because, extra base.
  19. All this may be true, baseball players struggle. It does not however, take away the cringe-factor of watching Buxton flail and do so many things wrong and have so little chance of hitting a baseball this spring. We all hope that changes, and soon. Meanwhile the pain of watching him at the plate is a joy-kill of epic proportions, and ripples outward to the furthest shores of Twins Territory, making everyone consider how their life/play/leisure decisions could have gone so incredibly wrong.
  20. Well, for once the ML club was worth following so the pain on the farm is of nothing.
  21. Still, you have to admire the Twins. Carrying 13 pitchers, and, needing to bring in a position player to finish the game against the Tigers. Twins were right all along. Short on pitching. Not that they did anything to address that.
  22. It wouldn't be the Twins if they didn't have a Breslow to start the season. Remember the year they tried Jason Bartlett as an outfielder and needed to actually see the corpse of Jason Kubel in order to realize he was officially done as a player? Minnesota Nice means giving the has-beens one more go at being on a mediocre club because.... well, that's the way we do it here.
  23. Well, of course. Who here thinks the Twins will lead the league in pitching? Not a criticism of this article, which has a nice statistical base, but we all knew that the first week was a ridiculous aberration. So, the Twins regress to the norm, and lose a lot more ballgames. I think the question becomes, who steps forward and shows long-term potential to pitch above average, and who shows they don't measure up. I mean, that's all that really matters in a year they won't compete.
  24. First I've heard of him. But, thanks.
  25. With Gibson, there's no there there. You look at the pitches the other team hits in crucial situations, and it's the curve/slide piece, even when it is practically in the dirt. There's no bite. The fast ball is fine, such as it is, but it won't get hitters out and they don't swing and miss. So, that leaves his sinker and his change-up. Serviceable sure. But, guess what? The hitters will be looking for them and lay off the ones out of the zone. Add it all up and Gibson does not have a route to a decent start. Teams will dink and dong him, depending on the pitches he throws, but there isn't swing and miss capability to make anything work or to get out of trouble. Sad, but time to cut bait on a 5 year experiment.
