Article: Twins Lose, Fans Boo, So Hope Remains
Old Twins Cap replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will be a great year for the casual, disinterested fan to get out on a sunny day and enjoy the atmosphere of a baseball park and watch some of the league's great players--on other teams. Wow, are they bad. And they look poorly coached.- 136 replies

It's good to have facts, and I think some things are out in the public on the Santana situation. But some things are not. Like, why, for a seemingly pretty successful MLB hurler, did he jump to four teams in four years? Was the word out on Santana, generally, across MLB? Is that why the Twins were able to sign him? In other words, is the MLB drug testing regimen a little bit, not sure of the word, flexible... or loose when it comes to catching violators? Such that, it could be several years before someone with a taste for PEDs gets caught? I tell you what. This drug-testing process, with free-agents and signings, and all the economic incentives to cheat and for teams to spend dearly for high--performers, this is ripe for a lot of abuse and political decisions and second-chances and for teams and commissioners to negotiate and re-negotiate. I don't think MLB is quite clear of PED use and the integrity of baseball quite yet.

Article: Bullpen Calculus
Old Twins Cap replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Who cares who starts the season in the bullpen? The Twins should be smart and try to showcase a Milone in AAA or a Pelfrey in MLB and work on a trade that nets a AA prospect, preferably for Pelfrey, since he has the larger contract. The Twins have May and Meyer lurking, with upside, and plenty of prospects for the Pen. Build some value in the veteran pitchers, in whatever fashion possible, then move them for a low-level prospect, save some payroll and improve the rotation and bullpen all in one swoop.- 85 replies

Boyer, sounds like a great story, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Surprised local bloggers haven't picked up on it. But, hey, if he can pitch, bring it. Love to have someone to root for in the bullpen, instead of fear and loathing, a la Capps, Burton and a bunch of others.

Article: Trevor May States His Case
Old Twins Cap replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins look for reasons why a younger player is not quite ready for the Bigs. After Kubel, Bartlett and Guerrier last year, and legions in the years prior, it's never the right time to bring young talent, but, it's always the perfect time to bring veterans -- who then go on to underperform and create a void that has to be filled by untested players. Yeah, there's more talent in the system finally, but it is still irritating to see the Twins FO never quite take the bit in its mouth: It's about rebuilding, not retooling with aged parts.- 54 replies

Article: Danny Santana's Role Becoming Solidified
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nunez. Watch him at bat. He will swing on the first or second pitch, every single at bat. Just watch him sometime. He has zero plate discipline or ability to work a count. In the outfield, non-chalance comes to mind. He really does not bring much to a ballclub, which is why the Yankees let him go. -

Just like in war, the best battle plan does not survive first contact with Spring Training. There will be injuries, there will be holes, problems, gaps. That's called reality. On paper, this division is all really good. And then, the season begins. I like that the Twins are younger, that they have talent, that they have a stable of decent pitchers, and some hope for a good bullpen. So, they have assets that could add up. And, mainly, they have a new skipper. That's an intangible and no metrics apply. Overall, for the first time in four years, I want to see the games played and see what happens. The rebuild has happened, albeit, way too slow, and now we are on the rise. What level we hit will be the fun part of the equation.

Yaawn. Weekend warriors who are super casual and go to games but don't even watch the action on the field. I.E> drink, flirt, shop, talk, check cell phone, rinse, repeat. Sounds like a losing team not worth watching. And a marketing effort that takes that into account for yet another year. Come to Target Field, the newest mall in America.

Article: Pace of Play and the Twins
Old Twins Cap replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Certainly, whatever else gets done, this idea that a manager can walk out on the field and stand around until he gets a signal from the bench as to the validity of his challenge -- that's just idiotic and contrary to the notion of being a sporting event. Either a manager challenges a call or he doesn't. He shouldn't get confirmation ahead of time from a camera angle. If the umpires have to call it in real time, then make the managers do the same. It just feels stupid to watch a manager scratch at the dirt and wait for the advantage of access to a camera. How does that help the sport?- 41 replies

Watch him run sometime. It's like a guy who is running in glue and fighting to advance. He is extremely muscle-bound. Not lumbering exactly but way over produced. My prediction is that he will have a hard time staying on the field and in the lineup. Might make a great trade candidate if he looks like a true slugger with bad luck injuries. At 23, life should be about fluidity. He seems like a dancer ossifying into a statue.

Article: Santana Signing Signals Shifting Mindset
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the change in mindset is this: The Pohlads have a ton of money. Like, billions. Do they want to sit by and watch their major investment (the Twins) languish while they have all their dough locked up in Wall Street? Or, do they take some liquid assets and put them into ballplayers. Now they have a couple hundred million in ballplayer contracts. But, guess what? They can trade these chips for other things. If the Twins stink up Target Field the fifty million in Nolascos and Santanas become something else entirely at the trade deadline. I think the Pohlads finally realize that baseball contracts are not fixed assets but more like commodities or stocks that go up and down, perform well or poorly and can be cashed in, dealt or inflate greatly in value. It's time the Twins get in the pool and play with the big boys. This year or next, if Nolasco is doing well, or Santana, or Hughes, and the Twins have a surplus of hurlers, they can cash one or two of them in and get all their money back in talent, while dumping their millions in liability on the Yanks. -
Article: Who Should the Twins Add to their 40-Man?
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kind of odd to worry about the scraps of the Twins roster when it comes to the 40-man and Rule 5 draft. People, relax. We are one of the worst teams in baseball. Our back end is not appreciated, and not going anywhere -- certainly not going to lift a team, especially one better than us, to a World Series or playoffs. Our parking lot is full of cheap Mazdas and untested KIAs. There are no Rumplestiltskins waiting for their moment in MLB. The most important thing now is to purge. Purge often, purge deep. That is what a rebuilding team does.- 37 replies

Article: Twins to Name Paul Molitor Manager
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Give a new manager a chance to be.... a new manager. Anyone beside Gardy is good with me. Molitor is familiar to the clubhouse, knows the players, their skill-sets, where he sees weaknesses -- on the whole, that's probably a good thing. It's his team now, and he will have to live with the good and the bad of it. Obviously, there's been a lot of bad. -
Article: How "Different" Is Paul Molitor?
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Am I the only one who recalls some lurid revelations about Molitor's off-field life? Haven't seen anything about that in these last months, but at the time it came out, I thought it was pretty damning and pretty much a disqualifier. But, maybe I'm wrong. The more tabloidy stuff all runs together at a certain point. -
Jake Reed has pitched 36 innings in his pro career and given up only 1 earned run, and the Twins want to do what? Stash him somewhere in the minor leagues because they have three more years before they have to protect him from the Rule 5. Watch the World Series and see what the Royals do with their 1st Round Pick this year. Man. No words for that kind of thinking.

Article: Who Will Be The Next Twins Manager?
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Molitor not a great candidate because of the "woman thing" in his recent past. Martinez seems to bridge some gaps -- young enough, Latino enough, smart enough, with a good enough pedigree. But, Twins don't really go "outside" the organization very often, as in, not in the last three decades. That's one of the problems of being an overly insular, cautious organization that doesn't have turnover: you end up with pretty much the same thing every time. Who looks, sounds and acts the most like Gardy?- 116 replies

Article: The Twins Have a Problem
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I had season tickets a couple of years ago, and as this article mentions, selling them on Stub Hub had become impossible for the entire month of September. But, the main thing is, going to a baseball game is supposed to be relaxing, it's a form of entertainment. Invariably, I would leave Target Field in a WORSE MOOD than when I left home seeking entertainment and relaxation. The Twins ARE THAT BAD. At that point, given all the other venues for having a good time in the Twin Cities, going to a Twins game plunges to the bottom of the list. And that's where they sit, sadly incapable of noticing that they are ripping the heart out of their fan base. -
Tough to root for your team to lose, but, if it means a quicker route to your team being able to win, well, that's the spot we are in.

It just amazes me the excuses that people make for Gardenhire. "It's not his fault." "He doesn't get to pick his players." "He's not responsible for the way rookies play." "It's not his pitching staff." Vomit. He's been Twins manager for 12 frickin years. He talks to TR every week and is in every key meeting regarding personnel. Over that time, he's won one playoff series, and been swept by the Yankees, what, three times? For the last three years, the team has lost 90 games -- no matter what players he's been given, no matter his coaches, the schedule, anything. The bare facts of managing in MLB are these: if you are manager and your team does not perform well, especially for THREE ENTIRE SEASONS, you will get replaced. That's the way it works in a normal, functional organization. The fact that the Twins, for some reason, and even their knucklehead fans, cannot bring themselves to face reality and do the obvious thing -- i.e. try a new manager -- is stupefying beyond belief. People like me have not only given up our season tickets, not only stopped going to occasional games, not only given up listening or watching, -- we are actively engaging in civil disregard for the whole Twins organization because, in the final analysis, when a group is this dysfunctional and shows absolutely no ability or aptitude to change themselves for the better -- there really is nothing to be done but hope that with enough fan apathy and failure, they will eventually be forced to realize they can't go on like this anymore.
