  1. To be fair, Hays is the only one of the three guys discussed to "have the bat of an MLB OF", at which point it all comes down to money.
  2. Your first sentence had me hooked. Exactly! I wish they could keep him, but I know he's replaceable. The 40 man has a couple of guys who could fill his role (for less money).
  3. Didn't read the comments, but Dobnak is to pitching as Cave is to the outfield. Looks decent enough at AAA to keep being considered as a call up. Sometimes flashes in the bigs, but it's a flash in the pan.
  4. I have never thought of Severino as a utility man, but, now that you bring it up, I guess he could play equally poorly at any position. That's why I think of him at 1st. Many clubs try to hide a poor fielder with a big bat there. I mean Severino's value is his bat. I would like to see him get a shot, because I doubt they will match what Santana gets offered. If you want a true utility man, go with Helman or Eeles (unless you're gonna insist on a switch hitter). Eeles won't be playing any CF for you, but I think the Twins could use a little of his "Charley Hustle" style.
  5. Sigh! I was excited to see him in the bigs with his high OBP. I kept thinking leadoff hitter to set the table for the Wallners, Larnachs, etc. But a .318 OBP isn't going to cut it. I think one more year is all he should get before the FO looks elsewhere. Jake Cave soured me on the 4 or 5 chances.
  6. I don't expect them to go after top-of-the-line guys, but the dregs are the dregs for a reason.
  7. I know, I know. "Cheap Pohlads", but one of the reasons they wait until the dregs are left is because of payroll constraints. Terry Ryan kept doing the same thing trying to find free agent starters.
  8. He's an All Star. They should be able to get something in return.
  9. Why do I feel like the "cheap" part of this will be influencial?
  10. From what I've seen Kiersey is a legitimate CF, and yet, I've seen him moved to RF when Helman played in the outfield (CF), he also plays some infield. I think they have some almost direct replacements at St Paul for the four guys they mentioned in the article. Kiersey for Kepler, Helman for Margot (at one point Helman had an above .500 slugging %), Eeles [who bunts for hits, steals bases, takes the extra base, etc. (I call him "Charley Hustle"), and plays a legitimate SS, 2B and corner outfield] for Farmer, and Severino (at a position where hitting is more valued than defense) for Santana. Santana is the inverse of what most clubs look for at 1st. He fields like a ballet dancer, but, at his age, the hitting is starting to slip. Don't sign aging veterans, or some guy who has proven that he doesn't have much of a hit tool. Give your in-house guys a shot. Hey Pohlads, it'll save you payroll!
  11. If Buxton starts stealing bases he won't play 100 games.
  12. Check out Payton Eeles. The kid reminds me of "Charley Hustle".
  13. I think the payroll will drive him off the roster (and I agree it's a shame)
  14. This last Spring I watched a kid I had never heard of playing at Ft. Myers. He signed out of Independent ball. After watching him play just 3 games I told my Daughter "this kids got something", and I predicted him to make Wichita this next season. Well, the Twins must have seen it, because Payton Eeles played the last half season at AAA. He plays a decent SS along with 2nd base and I've seen him in the corner outfield spots. I told my Daughter I got a "Charley Hustle" vibe watching him. Get what you can for Castro. Promote Eeles.
  15. Griffith's problem was that the Twins were his only source of income. If he lost money he didn't eat
  16. I believe Severino will take the job in Spring Training. Two years ago he led all of MiLB in HRs between A and AA. He's hit everywhere he's played except for a slow start at AAA which he made up for with a decent 2nd half. He's got above average power and he's a switch hitter. He wouldn't be the first poor fielder/good hitter that a team tried to hide at 1st base. At least, that's what I'm hoping for. I have given up on Kirilloff, and, although I wouldn't mind them re-signing Santana, he's kind of the inverse of what you need at 1st base (average bat, slick fielder).
  17. Watching Severino at first base would give you the impression that he's a (benefit of the doubt) slightly below average fielder. Second base, not so much, (I'm smiling real big). Guys like Spencer Steer come to mind. Severino is strictly a hitter. 2 seasons ago he lead the entire minor leagues in HRs, this season, at AAA, he started slow, but he came around. I've noticed him playing some right field at St. Paul lately. Maybe they have a plan for Santana. OK with me. Just as with Correa I am a fan for life.
  18. He has hit at a .250 clip over his career. They wouldn't be much as friends if they walked away because he's having a down year. I'm not a Farmer fan (I expect him to be gone); I just question the effect on the clubhouse.
  19. I fully expect him to be gone, and he is way overpaid. When they re-signed him, he was the primary backup at shortstop, I understood that. Now what they have to think about is how many good friends are going to be upset and complaining about loyalty, etc. Yes, I know they are professionals, but they are people first. It's not simply a matter of hiring a coach.
  20. I will be a fan of Santana's if he goes or stays, but first base is a position where clubs try to hide a mediocre fielder with a big bat. Santana plays first like he has had ballet lessons, and there is value to that, but, as a hitter he is middle-of-the-road. I do get the impression that he gets timely hits (don't know what the numbers say). The switch hitting is nice, but I think they signed him as a bridge to Severino (also a swith hitter). Severino is a masher, and I think he will have to lose the job rather than win it.
  21. That's what I was thinking, but, all I hear about Farmer is that he's a terrific, wonderful, excellent clubhouse guy. Not sure how much that is worth.
  22. Next season they won't want to pay Kepler, they won't re-sign Margot, I don't think they will re-sign Santana, and I'm not sure of Farmer's staus.
  23. I am also wondering why Kiersey doesn't seem to be on their radar. However, about a week ago, Helman's slugging percentage was somewhere around .560. I look for Helman, Kersey, Severino, and Eeles next season. Eeles would bring a Charley Hustle attitude with him.
  24. Hey, they're going to have to replace Dobnak after next season. Desclafani should be healthy by then. Seems like a no-brainer. 😄
