  1. Calling Sano's first big fly of the year. Today, that is.
  2. Oh, this could go in so many directions
  3. I don't think there is any way the Twins do not win today, and Nolasco will notch the first Twins W of 2016. It just seems meant to be.
  4. I personally read the game threads Chiefly for the jokes. So....Christian Bale?
  5. Immediate thoughts: 1)Did he lose a year of arbitration by being called now? 2)Will he get regular starts?
  6. It's not too late. But the Twins should get started soon.
  7. Having a thread entitled "this bullpen sucks" doesn't lend itself to a very TD comment-policy-friendly discussion. But I'll try. This bullpen doesn't seem to me to be constructed as well as it could be. I think the job of the GM is to upgrade every possible way you can, up and down the roster. I get that there is a tension between locking yourself in to multi-year deals vs allowing young players to emerge. But the last two times Ryan had opportunities to upgrade the bullpen, he went for Jepsen and Abad as the upgrades. Jepsen fared well last year, but neither player was anywhere near considered the best upgrade at the time. And that's a pattern we have seen time and again. If you aim for mediocrity, you have a good chance of succeeding.
  8. Well said, Chief. The problem isn't pulling Sano for defense in the 8th, though. The problem is having Sano playing RF. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. If he stays in and gives up a double, everyone loses their mind. If he's pulled and the game is lost with the tying run in second and Sano's spot in the lineup at bat...that's a lousy outcome too. The problem is Trevor Plouffe is too good a guy and they couldn't trade him. And they stumbled into signing Park without devising a good strategy. It seems to me that the strategy they decided on was the worst option. And ironically, the riskiest option, given how cautious Terry Ryan typically is.
  9. Great start to the season by Kohl. Let's see him rack up some Ks.
  10. With regards to Meyer and his chances of cracking the rotation, it's not that I am saying he will be first in line for an opening. Not at all. But the pecking order isn't always cut and dried; hot streaks, veteranism, timing; lots of different factors can impact who gets a shot. But let me put it a different way. Between May and Meyer, which has the greater chance of getting a start this year?
  11. I read it from Jeremy Nygaard, earlier in this thread. He said Molitor said it in MLB Network.
  12. It's striking how much people have written him off in one year. This is a real opportunity for him. If he does well at Rochester, he could be starting for the Twins before long. Has Tyler Duffey really completely bypassed Meyer on the charts because of 10 starts? Also, in the referenced article, Molitor says there was a 60-40 split on starting/relieving, and that he voted bullpen. That's very disappointing to hear. Who are the five people in this vote he referenced? Ryan, Antony, Molitor, Allen, and...who?
  13. Two things: 1)Alex Meyer is going to start at Rochester? That seems like huge news to me. If he does well there, he could get called up pretty easily. (Before Berrios, ostensibly.) That certainly didn't appear to be where his career was trending. 2)Molitor saying "we didn't expect to win the Park bidding" is quite the quote. I've often said that the Twins MO is "aim for mediocrity." In this case, they put in a bid expecting not to win it. Now, because they lucked out and actually won his rights...they are adjusting by moving Sano to OF. Of the options of DH, 1B, 3B or OF, they picked the one position that the position for him that will most likely result in an average to below average result.
  14. From the article, quoting Terry Ryan: "I don't know why he can't be a starter in the major leagues." I do. The Twins aren't letting him. That quote makes it seem as though it isn't a specific decision they are making, that they have no recourse in the matter. May appears to me to be one of the five best starting options on the team and was last year as well. This decision, both last year and this year, has hurt the team's overall ability to win games. So it is disappointing, although, as many have said, not at all surprising. Aim for mediocrity, and you might succeed.
  15. Palacios hadn't played above rookie ball, yet seems to be very high on a number of lists this year. He must be amazing, but it seems like people might be putting too much stock in rookie ball stats?
  16. Well, Kiley usually has a fairly accurate list of where all the top players sign, so when that comes out, and the Twins are listed on 50% of the top targets, we will know.
  17. On a related note, I once sent an email comment to friend that was somewhat sarcastic in nature, and I put the note in parentheses. He responded, "if an email is composed entirely as a parenthetical, can I completely disregard the email?"
  18. No, I think it just means that the folks who put together the list think that at this point in time it is more likely that these 100 players will become good major leaguers than Thorpe, Burdi, Reed, Melotakis, and Chargois. Last year, the same folks thought Stewart and Meyer were among the most likely to succeed, but a year later, with more data, they don't. Hopefully Thorpe has an amazing year and tops the list next year.
  19. It's too bad he started bad and had a bad month. From June to September, he posted 300 AB of north of 750 OPS, closer to 760. Hopefully that scrawny kid with the bloodlines will keep it up this year....at Ft Myers?
  20. Pretty quiet on the Ian Desmond front. I know people love to love Escobar, but Desmond has a much better track record than Escobar. Maybe with the down year the Twins could get Desmond for 4/60? He put up 3.5 WAR per year 2012-2014, whereas Escobar has put up 2WAR once. I'm also concerned that Escobar will hit below 250 this year. Thoughts? Obviously a longshot. But the Twins aren't majorly improving at catcher...so improving another up-the-middle spot would be nice.
  21. Doesn't it sometimes feel like they Twins' brass is playing a completely different game than the other GMs?
  22. Can I add another Biggest surprise...Terry Ryan makes no moves during the Winter Meetings?
  23. If the Twins are involved in a trade with the Rangers, and Profar is in the trade, I hope the Twins wind up with him.
  24. 2015 Surprises: Duffey's curveball, Escobar's extra-base power 2016 Surprise: Alex Meyer, Oswaldo Arcia
