  1. Still, nearly a third of a billion dollars is a nice obligation to get out of for the Marlins, considering half the contract is 33 + years old, for a guy that whiffs a lot. Last year was a career year for Gioncarlo, perhaps even an outlier. He probably has several more like it in him, but those last 5-6 years could be ugly, especially for a team like Miami. OTOH, he could go full Papy and be the best DH in baseball. Still, the Yanks find enough of their own studs for me to hate them. Their best players are usually home grown.
  2. I have a hard time imagining why TB would want to trade Archer - he checks all the boxes for the kind of pitcher everybody wants. IMO, it would take elite talent to even get them to think about it: yeah, Buxton or Sano type players.
  3. If he can master his secret pitch, the whirling dervish, there couldn't be a "too much."
  4. I'm sure there is evidence to support both sides, but only one team wins it all, so going all in is more likely to fail than succeed. Just build a good team that doesn't need help at the deadline, like the Twins in 87 and 91.
  5. Look at the Wild - Fletcher loves to swap picks for rentals, and so far it hasn't resulted in deeper playoff runs. Going all in guarantees only one thing: a weaker farm system.
  6. Wait what?! Hell yeah Bill Brown!
  7. Inefficiency and waste annoy me more than owners being conservative with their money. Morris was only a 1 year deal. No problem with that.
  8. As you mentioned, very few players in their primes (under 30)hit free agency. Look at high profile free agents: Zito, Fielder, Pujols, etc. Albatross contracts that hamstring an organization. I'm sure there are some that work out. Greg Maddux comes to mind, but he was 27 and the and the Cubs had issues, and arguably that was a different era. Big money contracts are rarely worth it, especially for those that get themselves in the position to reap the rewards. Age, satisfaction, many factors contribute. Adding a sensible free-agent to address a weakness in a mature team? Hell yeah. Chili Davis, Jack Morris, good adds that helped put their team over the top, all low risk short term deals. Big money free-agency is a fool's game.
  9. Smaller market eh?
  10. Better exercise would be to see how many 30+ free agents who signed 4+ year deals gave full value to the team that signed them. I'd wager it's much easier to find bad contracts than good ones.
  11. I look at yesterday's deals as adding depth to an already good looking draft class. The core of every great Twins team came up through the system. A key trade or two, and free agent here or there rounds out the mix, but these are rarely high profile adds. Building up the system is the best recipe for long-term success. Through that lens, the FO is doing quite well.
  12. I do like the Enlow - Pearson connection. Both LSU recruits, both drafted in the 3rd round, both lured away from college by over-slot bonuses, and now both in the Twins system.
  13. Glom on to those released Braves!
  14. Asia just isn't Twins territory - whiffed on Ohtani, Park, and Nishioka. Wouldn't be surprised if their handling on Nishi wasn't a turn off to Ohtani. Compare that to Japanese players on the Dodgers, Seattle, Texas. Granted, much better players, but still.
  15. If I had the opportunity to live in San Diego, or San Francisco, I'd take it.
  16. West Coast seems the probable choice to me.
  17. Ohtani is the ultimate pipe-dream: great hot-stove hopes. And while we all know the Twin Cities are a fabulous place to live, it isn't an obvious sell. Young promising core? Well, Yankees have the same average age as the Twins. Diversity - we fall short there. If only Northwest Orient were still a thing - some of the best routes to Japan. If you were Ohtani, would you sign here?
  18. This seems a dead and dull free agency period. Nothing happening.
  19. There is a lot of hockey to be played yet. I admit the Wild haven't really looked the part of a contender at all this season, but we see that every season with this team. I still think they will gel this season, and the later the better, as long as it doesn't mean missing the playoffs.
  20. Competitively, the Twins are an attractive landing place for any pitcher - team on the upswing, good pieces in place, solid stream of good prospects, openings, sustainable. I read comments in a thread on MLB trade rumors that said Minnesota is a hard sell compared to NY, La, Seattle, etc. Not so sure, having been to all the competition. Life is RELATIVELY easy and pretty happening in the Cities, and winter isn't a consideration for baseball player.
  21. Looks like Atlanta's international program gonna get the tomahawk chop from MLB. Ohhhh, oh ohhhhoh, ohhh, ohh ohh.
