I think part of the problem is that defensive lines are generally better than offensive lines these days, preventing good RBs from being great ones. The upside of a passing play is just so much higher than a run play, breaking a long run is rare while completing a deep pass happens at least once per game... not to mention you can get a DPI and get a bunch of free yardage. It's gonna take better O-linemen and more favorable rules to let the running game become more dominant.

It's possible, but I don't believe it's related to the contract. I think he wants to get out there and play which is why his 21 day window was opened, but the hammy is healing slower than expected. Activation-wise, they have to put him on the roster by next Wednesday or he's out for the year. Try a miserable season after it looked like this might be the year they kick it into gear. Way too many moves to placate Rodgers like burning money on Lazard and Cobb, and then even bringing in Boyle because he was Rodgers' backup in GB despite the fact he is a horrible QB. Oh, and hiring one of the most incompetent head coaches ever in the game to coordinate the offense just because he's a buddy of Rodgers. Ugh.

He's not a bad passer, but the reason why they're a near lock isn't because they're particularly good, it's because the schedule is easy (Bears at home, at Raiders, Bengals with Browning at QB, then Lions/Packers/Lions backups probably) and the competition in the NFC. Who is going to catch us? The Packers would have to go on a run from 4-6 to catch us, and even if they beat us they may not get the tiebreaker. One of the Saints/Falcons/Bucs has to win their division and the second place team probably isn't catching us. Or the Rams from 4-6. Are any of those teams even going to finish 9-8 outside of the AFC South winner?

I dunno, O'Connell didn't give any options for Dobbs to deal with the blitzes Denver was sending on that last drive. Not to mention Hockenson. Maybe if Jefferson is out there Kirk gets you that FG. Addison was having trouble getting open as he got shadowed by one of the best CBs in football and Osborn is a nothing-burger. Still, a lot of blunders from Dobbs this week, but he is still a top tier backup QB. Not to mention that this pass defense is coming off shutting down Mahomes and Allen the previous two games... they needed to win in the run game and the Mattison fumble / settling for FG really sealed their fate. I'm still shocked they went 5-1 without JJ and 2-1 without Kirk. And they're still a near lock for the playoffs given the travesty that is the NFC, and we have tiebreakers against most the teams below us. Not that we're going to do any damage in the playoffs, mind you.

He finished with a statline of 7/14 for 33 yards and a pick, a dreadful 26.5 passer rating compared to Wilson's 57.9. He's just as bad as I said.

They do have Trevor Siemian on their practice squad, who wouldn't be atrocious as Boyle, but they'd still be just as screwed.

Cause their backup is Tim Boyle, a guy who threw 1 TD to 13 interceptions in college and in his NFL career has 3 TDs to 8 picks. He's just there because he knows how to carry Rodgers' clipboard.

Probably free agents or trade acquisitions. I don't think there was anybody in the minors who needed to be protected, and it's better to have flexibility than to realize right before Opening Day you have to DFA one of those guys because the 40 man has too many minor leaguers on it.- 73 replies

It's insane how we went from 1-4, thinking we might get a high draft pick, to possibly going 11-6 and basically being a lock for the playoffs in late November. I was critical of the job O'Connell was doing the first few weeks, but it's been night-and-day during the winning streak. He's got locker room pumped up, nobody ever quit on the team, and he's been playcalling better since Jefferson got hurt. We have a keeper here!

He's done for the year. That game is likely a win now with Jake Browning (former Vikings UDFA!) at QB.

That's how it goes for some international kids. Yunior Severino, for example, would have been R5 eligible for the 3rd straight year if not added to the 40 man (or could have signed in MILB free agency I think).

I don't think they lose anybody. Mostly because they don't have any pitching prospects on that list, and most teams have the sort of hitters on that list.

I think the proper play is to have a QB/HB/WR take the snap and run to the endzone, then faff around for as many seconds and then run out of bounds and take the safety. Then you don't have to worry about a potential punt block, and the likelihood of a punt return TD on the safety punt is low as you don't need to field your full punt protection squad and can instead use more safties/LBs. But if you are going to punt there, putting it out of bounds would be a lot more ideal.

I was thrown off by how dominant that first half was. They pulverized a top 10 defense, Dobbs was dealing and Hock was getting open at will. And the defense had another great game, Flores is squeezing about as much as he can from the roster. The second half wasn't great, but I really can't fault the offense for falling back to earth with Hock in pain and the run game still pretty bad. Winston gave the Saints offense a boost with a couple crazy throws but also threw the game away with the picks. Every team that has started 1-4 and made it to 6-4 in the Super Bowl Era has made the playoffs... pretty crazy to see this team go on a tear. I'm happy to be along for the ride, despite having some questions about this team long-term. One thing is pretty clear though, O'Connell is legit and I trust him making decisions at the QB position going forward.

Canterino has some Nick Burdi vibes to him, in velocity and injury history. If the Twins are going to get anything out of him, it's going to be from the bullpen.

Mullens is an average backup, not close to as bad as Mannion. At one point when he started for San Fran their offense moved the ball pretty well but he threw a lot of dumb interceptions. Dobbs is more mobile and has been a sneakily great rusher, but is overmatched as a passer. So kind of a different flavor of backup QB. Maybe what Jaren Hall becomes in a couple years. Mullens had a back injury (in practice?) and missed one game before they decided putting him on the IR was the right move, so at minimum he'll miss 5 games.

Bringing in Dobbs is fine, he is a sneaky good scrambler but was overmatched as a passer, but he'll have much better weapons and OL play to back him up... if they do have him start. It might be a move made because they just don't know when Mullens will be back. Cleveland getting traded is surprising because it's been apparent they aren't going to extend him. But a measly 6th round pick in return is disappointing. There's simply no track record for a good guard (rated #8 by PFF!) getting traded mid-season in the past 10-15 years, I think most teams just never consider it, as continuity is valued more than a potential upgrade. Plus we are paying Risner to start, so they might as well keep playing him. Risner is a far worse run blocker than Cleveland so it is a blow to the OL's play. Hunter remains, despite talking of him going for a 1st or a 2nd+3rd. Now they kinda have to extend him, or else letting him hit the market is a waste as we could have gotten prime draft capital for him.

The starting price on Hunter would have to be a late 1st or a 2nd plus more. I don't think they move him, but it'd be plain stupid for him to go for less than Williams. I'm seeing people talk about it but I have zero interest. His contract is still terrible even with the signing bonus removed. The entire premise behind moving on from Cousins next year was to stop overpaying a QB, which is exactly what acquiring Murray would be... plus the poor leadership, durability problems, inconsistent play to start. Not to mention that the Cardinals would have to take about a $60M dead cap hit (spread between 2023-2024) because they literally gave him that deal one year ago. Plus he's been awful, the dude has a 2/6 TD/int ratio and their rookie QB just threw for 4 TDs in his first game. And he's probably out another 2-3 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Zero interest. I'd be down for getting somebody like Andy Dalton, Jacoby Brissett, or Case Keenum for a 6th or 7th rounder, that's it. It depends when Mullens will return, but give Hall a chance, see what happens, and keep some options on the table that aren't Sean Mannion.

Mullens is eligible to return in two weeks and has run an offense at an acceptable level before, unlike Mannion. Hall is an unknown but I’m not particularly high on him. Just please no Mannion. Anything but him.

I had said in a prospect ranking article about 2 years ago that I thought Rosario would eventually make it to the top 15 prospects - glad to see he's developing well.

I dunno, I don't think this team has what it takes to go deep, especially since that first game would be on the road against probably San Fran or Philly. But if they could keep playing like they did against the 49ers then it could be a fun season... I just don't know if this is going to be a one-off or if this is the new standard. Beat Green Bay next week and I'll be on board the playoff train, but losing to them would be a sign that this team is going to randomly pop off and sputter out the rest of the year.

Fair enough, their next 5 games look easy. They could absolutely go 9-8 and get into that 7th playoff seed.

That's funny. Maybe they think if you finish 2nd in your division you automatically get a playoff spot? That's the only way I could see it make sense.

Luplow, Stevenson, Gordon, and De Leon are basically guarantees to be DFA'd. Ortega is a near lock, as he can likely be retained on a MILB deal. Henriquez had a really bad year and can probably be snuck through waivers. Moran is also not good and Funderburk seems to have passed him up on the lefty reliever foodchain, so he's a pretty easy DFA too. Sands and Winder were disappointing but they should both get another year. Alcala is in a weird spot as he's so rarely been healthy, but he's still got 3 options so I think he sticks. Balazovic should get another crack at it too, though having no options left is a problem.
