  1. I don't see the argument against Gray. His numbers are very strong and his FIP suggests his ERA will decrease. Of course it's risky to pay pitchers into their mid-30s, but do you the Cardinals regret handing out that deal? Absolutely not.
  2. Sorry, I didn't realize that. I assumed it was a typical PH, else the injury would have been in the game's summary.
  3. Seems like some of the hitters are running out of steam, some are falling back to earth after getting hot this summer. Can't be surprised that this collection of pitchers who threw tonight gave up 6 runs. This team needed reinforcements. Obviously there's no replacing Buxton and Correa so it's hard to be too critical of the lineup struggling, but still. Why is Farmer pinch-hitting for Jeffers in any situation? I'm fine with platooning pinch hitters but not the likes of Margot and Farmer! Since when did Goldschmidt have a sub .700 OPS? And Arenado is having a career worst season at the plate, that's a lot of money between those two. Not really related to this game but feels like their dominance of the past 10+ years is over.
  4. Not surprising to see a rookie starter implode, it happens. It'd just be nice to not have to use him in the midst of a pennant race.
  5. Rough loss, but winning 3 out of 4 is pretty dang good. Just pull Alcala earlier and it's likely a sweep.
  6. Way too early to sell low on Julien, whereas I think Kirilloff is at the end of his rope. Julien at least took a big step up defensively at 2B while Kirilloff has proven he is a poor fielder at all positions. And health-wise Julien is in a far better spot. This is Eddy's first poor year, Alex has had more than enough fair shakes by this point. A Rooker-like resurgence is possible but you can't count on that happening. He did hit better than I remembered in 2023 but the questions regarding his health and his defensive positioning still loom large.
  7. Hey, Mahle is back pitching again. Time to run up the score on him!
  8. Solid job getting 2 of 3 from a scrappy Royals team. Still concerned with the bullpen, they are gonna be exposed if they're putting Thielbar and Richards out there in playoff games. They really need to move Varland to the pen but they don't have the depth to do that.
  9. Nice job jumping out to a solid lead to support the rookie starter.
  10. Ugh. I was hoping to see JJ get some starts in the second half of the season but I’m doubtful on that now. Some recent Vikings torn meniscus examples who got the full repair are Adrian Peterson, who came back Week 15 IIRC and Irv Smith Jr who missed the whole 2021 season. JJ likely doesn’t get rushed back.
  11. Paying Polanco $12M to be a replacement level player seems like a fairly big hinderance to the team - I think they were right to get what trade value they could out of him. That doesn't justify the blunders they made elsewhere, of course.
  12. This has been a lose-lose trade, as both sides have to be very disappointed with what they've received. It is apparent the Twins picked the right time to trade Polanco, but as one who liked the trade initially, that was given Topa would actually pitch and Gonzalez's stock wouldn't immediately plummet (and I was expecting a follow-up trade a la the Garver/IKF trade). And even though the trade freed up some money to spend, that wasn't exactly spent on quality additions.
  13. I hate to be that guy who brings this topic up, but this is why the failure to make additions at the deadline is going to cost this team. Acquired a reliever who was DFA-able and he implodes when you need him. Didn't add another lefty so Thielbar is locked onto a roster spot despite how hittable he is. And if Ryan is hurt for a longer stretch of time, then it looks foolish to forego picking up a back-end starter. I wasn't asking for any of the top prospects to be moved, but they could have at least bolstered the depth in the pitching staff. Now it's time to lay in the bed they made. Kudos to Winder for going 3 scoreless innings. It'd be great if he could have a Sands-like evolution from AAAA starter to MLB reliever. I think Varland can do that but now more than ever they need him for starting depth.
  14. Really a bummer to see Lopez so inconsistent. He just needs to get hot... but he's gotta do that soon. Unfortunately it seems Martin is the guy I thought he was. Not as good at contact as some think (the Arraez comparisons he was getting at the start of the year were ridiculous), and he didn't get the proper time in the minors to hone his ability to play in the outfield. Factor in his arm and lack of power... that's not a good combo.
  15. Prelander Berroa… that’s a name I’ve not heard in some time. Well, not since talking about the Dyson trade. A week ago.
  16. I actually got to watch this game on TV! It's about dang time. Playing the White Sox feels like playing a minor league team. It doesn't feel right beating up on a squad that doesn't belong in MLB!
  17. I was very skeptical on Jax and thought his chances of becoming a quality reliever were low, but that’s why they have to shake the dice. No reason not to given the track record of AAAA started becoming great relievers.
  18. Yeah, perhaps. It's not like all of the power-first prospects fail but it took him until age 28 to break out. Rooker was a fairly highly regarded prospect whereas Severino has bounced around the #20-30 range in the organization. No reason to give up on him, but I remain skeptical.
  19. Farmer can at least handle SS and is trusted at 3B, two things that Severino can't do. As it was already mentioned, Diego Castillo got the call-up despite needing to open a 40 man spot when they could have just brought Severino up. He is a 1B type and I'm not sure if his bat will play in the majors. We've had plenty of back end of the top 30 prospects who could hit for power in AAA but couldn't do anything in the majors... I'd like to think Severino can be better than but I dunno. He is gonna strike out a lot, that is for sure.
  20. This move was necessary to get Dobnak onto the 40 man roster. Kirilloff hasn't played since June 11th, so we are already approaching the 60 day mark.
  21. I came here to post this, there were some offseason articles claiming that the "quantity over quality approach" was better for the bullpen, and yet Jackson and Staumont have failed despite being handed 40 man spots, Okert is questionable at best and de facto the team's best lefty, and Topa has yet to pitch. And they relied on Stewart who has a history of getting injured frequently. Yes, we know paying relievers is risky but this keeps happening every offseason - they skimp on relievers and have to patch things together midseason. Thankfully it's quite routine that young arms like Alcala and Sands emerge to patch the holes, but that doesn't justify the approach. I thought they would have learned from the season where their highest paid reliever was a 38 year old Joe Smith!
  22. I actually thought this was a good trade back in the day based on the way he was pitching, but the injury happened and basically nullified it. There weren't any red flags medically that we were aware of, so unlike some other pitchers they have traded for and immediately got hurt, I think this was plan old bad luck. Then that controversy came out and that was the end for him. Part of the dislike of the trade came from trading Jaylin Davis, who was killing it at AAA but in reality was a AAAA player and proved that. His 2019 season at AAA was bonkers, hitting .300, 35 HRs and just short of 1.000 OPS. Teng and Berroa have pitched in 2024 in the majors but are fringe guys, and were seen as mere lottery tickets at the point of the trade.
  23. I was comparing when we traded for Fulmer at the deadline, not him at this very moment. That was seen as a lesser move and only cost Sawyer-Gipson, this is… almost a DFA trade.
