  1. Reed can’t have much trade value owed $8M while averaging 89 mph and coming off a poor season. But I guess it’s a better idea to keep him in the Twins bullpen and wait until his ERA balloons to 7.00 or so and finally DL him.
  2. Nice article, Matt, I loved the personality you injected into this piece. I don't want to see retreads like A. Reed (unless his speed ticks back up), Duffey, or Magill in the bullpen... I would be fine cycling through some of the somewhat intriguing AAA depth (guys like Eades, Nicolino, J Reed) and see if anything sticks. I'd rather try out the guys with small chances to succeed rather than the guys we know that most likely won't succeed.
  3. Wow, these are some huge changes and some big surprises too. No more August waiver trades, only 2 extra roster spots in September... and most shocking of all, the 3 batter minimum. I always thought that was more of a fantasy, but next year it’ll be a reality.
  4. Here’s hoping for good AAA campaigns for Wade and Gordon so they can get themselves up to the majors soon. I think Wade is getting close.
  5. Yep, this seems right, as it's exactly what my 25 man projection was, including having Reed on the DL. This seems like a good bet to how the roster will start the season.
  6. Wait, so Cabrera and Adrianza embraced, and then only a minute later Cabrera pulled the hidden ball trick on him? Wow, that's cruel.
  7. This was a fun exercise, I wonder how other players on other teams affect their teams' W-L ratios... time to go do some experiments of my own.
  8. And this is why I didn’t participate in the “where is Gonzalez going to play” debate. Injuries ( and inexplicable ones too) are going to happen, so I’m glad Adrizana isn’t locked in as the 3B now.
  9. That's right, I forgot Odorizzi was last year's opener, but that was due to Berrios being set up to pitch a game in Costa Rica. Hopefully this will be the first of many more Opening Day starts for him.
  10. Addison could barely crack 90 MPH, you say? It looks like he's still toast. Knowing how the Twins operate, he'll get about 8-10 innings and put up a 7/8 ERA and then finally get DL'd for a good chunk of the season. Why have we only added Blake Parker to the bullpen? It looks like Matt Magill is probably going to end up on the roster for most the season.... Meanwhile, can someone remind me why Duffey still has a 40 man roster spot? I think he's been given enough chances in the majors to see that he isn't MLB caliber.
  11. I commented that because there was some buzz in 2017 about Granite becoming a MLB regular. I even remember Darren Wolfson talking about how much the Twins FO liked him and he hypothesized trading Rosario to make room for Granite to come up. Plus according to various sources, Granite was supposed to be the 4th OF last season before the shoulder injury happened. So my comment should be noted with the context that some were overhyping a 13th rounder, but also just some frustration to see another young guy flame out with the Twins, even if he was a longshot.
  12. Y'know, if this is going to be Kiriloff's position going forward, then this short term fix is fine with me. I was really thinking that they were going to go with Cron & Austin, but with Gonzalez's addition, it's looking like Austin will have to squeeze through waivers to get to AAA, which I don't think the Twins will get him through. Most people are down on it because he was DFA'd by the Rays and the fact that Logan Morrison was a thing last year. I think if we try to ignore those factors, the Twins acquired a pretty good hitter who was a big help to the Rays last season. BTW, just as they DFA'd Cron, the Rays DFA'd Corey Dickerson over the 2018 offseason, a 28 year old LF coming off of a .815 OPS season. Dickerson went on to hit .300 for the Pirates in 2018 with .805 OPS, 3.8 WAR, and a Gold Glove. Just because the Rays are perceived as a smart team doesn't mean they don't make mistakes, like letting Dickerson go. Cron ain't winning a Gold Glove here, but he certainly could hit over .800 OPS, which would be an improvement from Mauer.
  13. It makes sense to sneak him through waivers now while he has just one option left and coming off a year where he hit .210 at AAA. Though I’m unsure of the plan with Reed, as he will have to clear waivers if he doesn’t make the team.
  14. I feel like Astudillo should be on this list, but is he ineligible because he hit .355 last fall in 97 PAs? Because his popularity could easily win him this award this Spring Training. Whoops, my bad, just read the article again fully. I'll bet on Jake Reed to win the award but inexplicably not make the team because nobody wants.
  15. Good point, I did hear from Reusse that he thinks Adrianza is going to start the year on the DL, and reading this, I can see why...
  16. Just thought I'd drop some notes on Gonzalez's fielding: (all 2018 season) (I'm comparing Gonzalez to all other players who played 100+ innings at the position) 1B (176 innings) UZR: 30th / 76 DRS: 23rd / 76 RNGR (range): 38th / 76 2B (183 innings) UZR: 45th / 82 DRS: 32nd / 82 RNGR: 48th / 82 SS (269.2 innings) UZR: 62nd / 68 DRS: 55th / 68 RNGR: 58th / 68 LF (533 innings) UZR: 14th / 97 DRS: 9th / 97 RNGR: 25th / 97 Gonzalez barely played any 3B last year, so here's his 2017 numbers: (138.2 innings) UZR: 59th / 76 DRS: 40th / 76 RNGR: 53th / 76 So in summary, according to these stats, Gonzalez is a good defensively at LF & 1B, average at 2B, below average at 3B, and relatively bad at SS. I'm starting to think Adrianza might be safer than I originally thought, and I didn't realize he was graded so well in the outfield. Definitely bad news for Tyler Austin, though.
  17. Decent signing, I like the added depth Marwin brings, he’s a great backup plan for Sano. For those who said the Cron claiming prevented Cruz and Gonzalez from signing... looks like you were proven wrong. I’m unsure who’s getting booted off the roster. With Gonzalez’s ability to play 1B and OF, it seems like bad news for Austin. Not sure if he’s good enough at SS to replace Adrianza... i don’t think this will affect Cave. For the 40 man roster, I’ll DFA Granite. I’ll bet he can make it through waivers.
  18. I understand Molitor was put in a tough situation and forced to use his favorites in the bullpen time after time, but the overuse of certain relievers was simply blatant. Add that to the times relievers went missing (Matt Magill was hidden better than Waldo at one point), and I hope that Rocco will be able to preserve the bullpen better. I am worried about the depth, both for high leverage and AAA depth. I don't think putting Parker and Hildenberger into high leverage situations is a good idea, and we don't have a ton of reinforcements at AAA that I see becoming viable relievers. There's only so much Rocco's going to be able to do with this weak bullpen.
  19. The more I've thought over the situation, I've started to consider a Austin/Duda combo. With Duda's .839 OPS against righties and Austin's .846 OPS against lefties, you could platoon the two and Austin could play in LF/RF off the bench if needed. But that would ignore the fact that Duda is starting to age and his play has declined, and Cron is younger and coming off a career high season. But it wouldn't make sense to give up on Austin as I believe his best baseball is ahead of him... arg! I don't see a perfect solution here. Cron did hit .767 OPS against righties last season, so that's not so much of a drop-off from Duda as I thought it would be. ... and now I'm back to square one and going with Cron/Austin.
  20. It looks like we have our answer to this question: With the lack of bullpen signings, the writing was on the wall for this one. I can imagine they'll try to work him into high-leverage situations if he starts the season well.
  21. Great article, John. It's weird to see Kepler not bet on himself, but with the way he's stagnated at the plate the past 3 seasons, I suppose it makes sense. But for the Twins, this deal not only becomes a total bargain if he improves, and it makes him easier to trade since they've purchased an inexpensive year of free agency and have a second option on top of that. Now if only we could get Rosario and Berrios to sign extensions like this! Of course, they'll require more money and probably less control of their free agency years.
  22. I don't see any reason to start Lewis' service clock early, let's let him take his time and see how he does. Hopefully he'll be ready by some point in 2020 and we won't need to have him yo-yo up and down between Rochester and Minnesota.
  23. I'm a huge fan of this deal. Buying out one year of his free agency for $7.5M in 2023? Heck yeah! And then $10.5M in 2024 if he goes up for 550 PAs and $12M in 2025? Factoring in rising salaries, that seems incredibly team friendly to me. Now, Polanco still has to hit well and pan out as a player, but I think this is a phenomenal extension that has very little risk attached. At worst he'll end up as a slightly overpaid utility guy. I kinda feel like Polanco is going to regret this deal in the future, as it reminds me of the Denard Span deal that he signed that ended up being very team friendly. More of these extensions, please!
  24. Yeah, no thanks. Duda's best baseball is behind him, and Austin's is ahead of him, I believe, and in a season where the Twins aren't going all in, it makes a lot more sense to try out Austin than Duda. If something happens to Cron, Duda would be a decent replacement for him... but I'd much rather have Austin on the roster.
