    I think there is a big factor that everyone overlooks in these scenarios. Not all of these guys are going to turn into MLB caliber players, much less stars that we need to worry about huge free agent contracts at some point in the future. I wish Trevor May all the best in his Twins career and hope he wins a Cy Young. However, he is far from a lock to be a competent big league pitcher. Planning on every single prospect turning out is a recipe for failure, hence the Santana signing.

    Interesting that Scioscia spotted the problem with his mechanics but they were not fixed until he pitched for KC. Was it the new pitching coach that got him to make the changes or was it the player not willing to make the changes until after the trade? Some Worley type stuff going on here as this was the thing that Worley supposedly fixed as well.

    Yes, yes you are - good work . I, for one, hope that Meyer is the 5th starter as he clearly has the stuff to be a big leaguer, if he can just throw it over. And between May and Milone - well, one of the two will likely step forward and put pressure on anybody not performing.

    Mike, try to be more positive. I'm positive you don't have to worry about #4. Meyer or May will get the 5th spot and if the other is pitching well, they will be in the pen. Somebody else will get hurt and then the other will get some starts. There hasn't been a year in I don't know how long that the Twins weren't going 7-8 starters deep. Let's save our angst for when the Twins have so many good starters that we don't know what to do with them. Oh, and this assumes both Meyer and May turn out to be credible starters in the majors - surely not a certainty there either.

    Any contract signed in this type of free agent situation is likely going to mean that you will be unable to trade the player. There are no "bargains" when you have to outbid a whole bunch of other teams. If the player's performance declines at all from the level that earned him the contract, he is basically can't be traded.

    Well, this interesting anyway. Not sure I would have done this but it will be exciting for the fan base. I've been advocating for the younger Brett Anderson, which would have allowed us to still go after a good defensive centerfielder. My guess is this transaction ends the Twins off season.

    Sure, he has been clearly better, including one stretch his first year as a Pirate that was close to his glory days in a Twins uniform (with Andy as his pitching coach and Gardy as his manager). He also had a mediocre stretch that first year and a pretty bad stretch at the beginning of last year. So, its a variation on the same theme - you really don't know what you get with him and those aren't the kinds of pitchers you want to sign to big dollar, long term deals. I'm also skeptical that he was magically fixed in PA. I think he has a great arm and wild mechanics that will always lend itself to streaks of peaks and valleys.

    Good question - one that we will (hopefully) have to ask! He obviously thrived last year in his new environment so I am guessing that would mean something. And, since he signed here once, I am assuming he would sign again given a fair contract. Regarding Liriano, I just don't get all the love. We couldn't get him out of town fast enough the last time he was here.

    No thanks on Liriano - even with some good stretches the last two years he still had stretches where he was not good. I was of the go big or go home camp but am now changing my mind. I like going after Brett Anderson and only him, here's why: the question isn't quality. If he is healthy (I know a huge if) he becomes possibly our best pitcher. If he is not healthy, Meyer / May get more of an opportunity. The next big pitching contract I would like to see is an extension for Hughes, provided he pitches well next year.

    Like the Oliveros plan. I think he can be a good arm out of the pen, and long awaited return on the Delmon Young fiasco.

    Except that we have no evidence that Molly wanted Torii for any supposed leadership qualities. Ryan went out of his way to downplay that aspect. As you might tell, I think all the intangibles stuff is a bunch of crap. When your primary attribute is "intangibles" that is code language for "you can't play anymore". My two favorite intangibles quotes from TK: "Momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher" "Leadership is a bases loaded double"

    Not sure I follow The point I was making is that when they start talking leadership and intangibles it usually means you can't play anymore. I think the press conference proved my point on the leadership BS

    No way he left money on the table I'm sure the only reason he came here was the money.

    The only way I like this deal is if we find out later that the Twins called Colby Rasmus and he said "no thanks" or let's talk a multi - year contract. Other random thoughts: please don't listen to Torii when he says he had to "come home". What this means is that Texas, et al. offered him $5 million and TR had to double it to get him to come here. We were all waiting for when the Twins would overpay to seal the deal on a free agent - just never thought it would be Torii. I'm also not buying the clubhouse leader stuff. Basically like the baseball equivalent of "she's got a nice personality:" Will really dislike this deal if they move Arcia - he needs to stay put and see if he can learn to play where his future lies. Having pointed out all the negatives, I do have to admit that if you consider the whole package, he was better last year than anybody we trotted out there. Faint praise but it will be an improvment.

    I had not even thought of that. Its crazy that his number isn't retired with the Twins.

    I mostly agree with the choices but I would bring back Nunez and Milone. Milone mainly because it is a cheap way to get another look at a guy who has had success and the fact that he has an option left could be very valuable for our pitching staff next year. I think they bring Nunez back because I am still not convinced that Santana won't end up playing centerfield some / a lot. Things means that Nunez is the utility guy and a far better choice in this role than anybody else they have.

    And that makes all the difference in the world in this situation. Just because people are not advocating for an extension doesn't mean we don't value him as a ballplayer. At this point, he is probably my favorite Twin but the circumstances are such that the Twins just don't have to do it.

    That is my point. They don't need or want him for 6 more years, physically or financially.

    This plus 100. They have him for the years they want with no obligation. Why give that away?

    The Twins are in a perfect situation with him. They can keep him through his control years for a reasonable cost and be done with him right about the time he will start to decline. The biggest reason for not giving him a long term contract is that they can keep him for exactly the number of years that they need him and not have a couple of years in his 30s where they don't really want him and are still paying him lots of money. I feel the same way about Plouffe, only more so as he is accomplished substantially less than Dozier.

    Although the clock is ticking, there is still time for him, just don't count on him for 2015. Start him in AAA, make sure he gets some time in left as well as center and keep your fingers crossed. Because he could be a potentially superior defender, he could be a contributing MLB player with lesser offense.

    I think that if he stayed healthy, he would definitely be in. But that could be said about quite a few players. His overall ability level at his prime (to me) was at a HOF level. He had some bad luck and HOF voting is not a clear process, but I get the argument that his career number just aren't there. However, if you ask some of the pitchers of that era, they will say Tony is the most dangerous hitter they ever faced.

    Correct. And every MLB player (including future HOF players) were prospects at one time. There isn't anything wrong with trading prospects, or not trading prospects, per se. It really depends on the situation the team is in at that time. And no, Kepler alone isn't getting you anything close to a quality MLB pitcher.
