Article: Correa Just Opened The Door For Buxton
COtwin replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not my argument at all. My argument is don't call for the CF fix, if you aren't going to call for the fix at 1B and C as well. Buxton might bring us a few WAR this year if he does well right? These other problems are actually replacement level or lower. Chris Herrman has a higher WAR than Kurt Suzuki. At least those two are positive WAR, Joe is a negative. Hicks is higher than both Joe and Kurt. I am not arguing against Buxton up, or even benching Hicks if needed. I am saying that there are a few players who are really hurting this team and Buxton won't fix that, and neither will Sano (without a position change). I totally get what you are saying about that's not how baseball works, but that not what I was arguing for. My wife walked into the room yesterday and saw Mauer up and asked, "Why does he always ground out to second?" Right before he grounded out to second I heard someone (Ryan?) throw Santana under the bus during the broadcast, saying he wasn't taking advice or teaching and he needed to go down. Why don't we hear that about Joe? If my wife can recognize tendencies, and she rarely watches baseball, Why aren't we talking about benching Joe or Kurt? -

It is. But Hicks is doing what we expected, and getting better. Mayer and Suzuki have vastly underperformed all year and are trending down. A teams biggest problems will always be the underperforming of the Core of their lineup, not the performing to expectations of a 9 hitter. -

IF. Button moves into the lead off spot it changes things, but I don't see that happening right away. I think they put him in the at 8/9. That will limit whatever impact we are projecting him to have. And I think we are at least very good in CF already. Don't get me wrong i am pumped for Buxtons arrival. I just think the black holes that are Mauer and Suzuki are MUCH larger problems than our solid defending and improving at the plate CF. every time I see someone reference that Hicks doesn't hit well enough to play a corner OF spot, I think that Mauer doesn't hit anywhere near well enough to be taking 1B on a rebuilding club. And Mauers salary is much more prohibitive. -

Excited to see him up, but he doesn't really fill a void right now. The Twins problems are Suzuki, Mauer, Plouffe, and Hunter. In that Order. Suzuki has a .489 OPS in his last 15 and that is inflated by the 5 hits in two games last week. That coupled with him being used in an important spot in the lineup until recently and you have the worst hitting catcher in ALL of Baseball with more than 140 AB. Outside of a couple timely hits, Mauer has been absolutely useless, and more actually a detriment with his weakly hit groundball double plays. Plouffe is in a slump, but I think he will recover. Hunter is probably playing more like we expected of late. Point is, Buck does't fix any of these problems. He is really replacing what Hicks provides, and Hicks is the least of the Twins problems. -
Article: Quality Pitches The Key For Phil Hughes
COtwin replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He says that he hasn't been able to get his 4 seamer up enough and he is leaving them down in the zone. My impression is that he is missing on pitches that should be below the strike zone and his four seamer is staying right down the middle. Seems like what he did wrong with Pedroia is what he is consistently struggling with. Why throw a 4seam fastball low anyway? Seems like you want your 2 seamer to appear in the lower part and then drop to the dirt. Thoughts Parker? -

I think TR would love it if we could trade Nolasco and Pelfrey and reinstate Santana and call up Milone. As a matter of fact I would live that too.- 3 replies

Article: Cereal and Statistics
COtwin replied to PeanutsFromHeaven's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He isn't advocating that TR pull out his calculator and make up a new metric, that is what a degree in statistics is for. He is advocating that the trends that statistical analysis can provide should no longer be poo-pooed by our favorite baseball team. If you are looking for an edge than advanced analytics can provide a bit of that. Data analysis isn't just for Bill James. Anyone who can see a trend in numbers can do it, someone who has years of experience can do it better. I think he is pointing out that data analytics is moving into many facets of life and that if people managing billions of dollars will risk the GNP of a small nation using it, than maybe we could risk shifting the infield more or make our next free agent signing using a bit more number crunching. -
Article: Twins Minor League Report (5/21): Lee Dominates
COtwin replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Staufer coming up. Looks like the Twins brass set the bar pretty low for him, cause I swear he tripped over it. 2 innings 5 hits 2 walks and 3 runs. His WHIP must be close to 47.3. But on the bright side. He did strike 1 guy out. And Oliveros still can't get even a shot of espresso with the big league club.- 21 replies

I do love that some of these moves have paid off and we are watching some decent baseball but I paid a solid chunk of change to watch the aaaa teams that Ryan has been building, so he and the twins organization better not feel smug about anything. They still need to not make any silly move like being buyers at the trade deadline and giving up prospects for a rental so we can just make the playoffs.

Article: Aaron Hicks' New Swing Paying Dividends
COtwin replied to Kevin's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It seems to me that he is just missing on a lot of his swings early in the count. You can see him not watching a strike early in the count. He is making aggressive swings and hopefully as he starts seeing more major league quality pitching he will start to catch those early offerings with solid contact. Most of his hits have been later in the count, with a more contact oriented swing. Excited to see him drive some of the misses as he starts to catch up. -
Article: Twins Outfield Of The Future Begins
COtwin replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hicks made a few bad reads and took a few bad routes on some balls. He once flipped the ball out of his glove to dozier showing that he is an careless idiot and he missed the cutoff man a few times. All around bad defender. Sarcasm. I think a handful of mistakes once again painted the entire picture of his defense in a negative shade. I watched most games last year and yes he made some mistakes but in my opinion not as many as people make it out to be when they say his defense sucks. He looks to have cleaned much of that up anyway -

I don't understand the no Rosario. He has short time left up here. He shouldn't be sitting, Ever. -
“That’s all I’ve ever really known is to go out there and pitch,” Pelfrey said. “Whether I’m right or not, I want to pitch.” I appreciate his honesty, but that scares me. The team has to come first. It gets frustrating hearing about guys not disclosing injuries and not wanting to miss starts, but the keeping going out there to get shelled. i.e. Ricky N.

Article: It's Time For Aaron Hicks
COtwin replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope people can have patience with him. In reality this should be only his second season of coming up. He would probably still be going through growing pains. Hopefully people look at him through the lenses they are seeing Santana through right now. They have things to work on. You could argue that Santana is having a worse year (offensivley and defensively) than Hicks had last year. No one is shouting for Santana to go down. Most are preaching patience, as they should. -

In case no one mentioned it. Price has been bumped to Saturday instead of Thursday. Hick wouldn't have to face him. Just a thought. Of course we haven't exactly figured out Sanchez. -
Anyone see the redwing game? I watched on game cast and it seems like there is more of a trend for Hicks in putting the ball in play with two strikes. They pitched him away and he hit it away for an infield hit. I think that is as impressive as the triple or double. Hicks often looked overmatched with two strikes in the past. Has anyone else noticed that he is having more of a gameplay with his at bats?

Article: Gardenhire's Possible Landing Spots
COtwin replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that Grady was a bit behind in the times and I know he wasn't able to make some fairly good teams out perform themselves. But regardless. I want Gardy to succeed. I hope he gets another chance at a major league team and manages them to a world series, unless it is against us. Gardy gave us some good years. I don't think he was what we needed, but I wish him the best, and I choose to believe he will be capable elsewhere. -

You are all wrong. Don't trade him! Sign him to a new 4 year contract. I bet he would sign for 6-7 mill a year. Strike while the iron is hot. -

Excited to see how Gibson adjusts to keep K.C. off balance tonight. I have high hopes for him this year. I do want to see him miss a few more bats though. Also, super excited to see the turn around start for Alex Meyer tonight. -
Article: For Young Hitters The Struggle Is Real
COtwin replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Still to early to quit on Hicks, and his value is low. Way to early to dump Esco and Plouffe even if Sano is up. Both of those guys have good value, either as solid trade material or bench players on a winning team. I think we forget, after how poorly our bench has been put together, how important it is to have starting quality guys on the bench. Sano will need to be solid for a year before I am ok with letting Plouffe go in a trade. Esco was the number 5 OPS shortstop with min 450 PA last year. Solid defense as well. Very good asset, not to be given away. Plouffe was the number 12 OPS 3B last year, and he played adequate defense. Again, a very valuable asset. How we manage things like this in the transition to all of the young guys, will probably be a major factor in making us a complete team that can make World Series runs.
