Given Mr. Baldelli has a huge tendency to pull the starter after 4 or 5 innings, I can easily see 2 or 3 of these guys falling into a long relief role. Just as an example, let's say Gray, Mahle, Ryan, Maeda and Paddock are the 5 starters. I can see Ober, Winder and Dobnak all in long relief roles. If you want to switch out Paddock for Winder or Ober, fine but, the premise is the same. This should take some of the pressure off guys like Theilbar, Lopez, Duran and whoever else is in the pen and allow them to pitch just one inning and not be used night after night.

EXACTLY and this has been going on all season, almost from game #1. Rocco wore out the bullpen before we got to mid-June.

When your starting pitchers rarely go longer than 4 innings and the bullpen rarely has anyone go longer than 1 inning, your bullpen will breakdown. The bullpen wasn't terrible in April and May but, the same guys sure are bad now. Rocco wore them out.

Just say NO, to SaNO.........and move on without him.
  5. Swing Batter-Batter
Just say NO, to Sano, he needs to go.

Why wasn't Thornburg available? He had not pitched since last Friday.

I have questioned many of Rocco's decisions on pitchers, both when he uses them and who he uses. The one that bothered me the most was the Archer move, after pitching 5 innings and only throwing 57 pitches, he pulls him. This was easily Archer's best performance so far and IF Rocco is truly following a "pitch count" plan, it makes no sense, given Archer had thrown over 70 pitches in each of his 3 previous starts. The guy was cruising and in my opinion, could have went one or two more innings. That is when he should have brought in Duran, to pitch the 8th & 9th innings. Beyond that, using 3 to 5 relief pitchers every game, will have the bullpen completely burned out by July 4th. He needs to find a balance and it appears that when it comes to pitchers, he is in over his head.

I agree. If you leave Smeltzer in for one more inning, Duffey never gets in the game.
  9. Swing Batter-Batter
He sure did. His handling of the pitchers is terrible. By my count, it has cost us 5 games this season.
  10. Swing Batter-Batter
I could not possibly agree more, with everything you said.

That ranking looks right to me. I might switch Bundy & Archer but, that's about it.
  12. Swing Batter-Batter
With Paddock gone for the year, Ober still out, Bundy not pitching well and Archer can't seem to get past 4 innings, why not give Smeltzer a shot?

Looking at comparable "small sample sizes", one could easily conclude that, Miranda should have been sent down instead of Lewis.
  14. Swing Batter-Batter
Tim Young, Willie Plett & Gilles Meloche.
  15. Swing Batter-Batter
He is obviously not as good defensively, as either Polanco or Urshella.......but, he is a better at the plate, than 90% of his teammates. He should be in the lineup daily, as the DH.

I think the Twins front office might still be stinging a little, over the 2021 starting pitching pick ups, that ended up being complete busts......Shoemaker & Happ come to mind. The only free agents left out there are more than likely, more of the same. There are arms in the minors, that might be able to help in July and beyond. The challenge might be, staying competitive until then.
  17. Swing Batter-Batter
Without a #1, #2 or #3 starting pitcher, any rotation they throw out there, will amount to a bullpen game. Can they play a 162 game schedule of bullpen games?
  18. Swing Batter-Batter
I think Sano is the easy answer but, a platoon with Donaldson might help keep him healthy and keep his bat in the line up.
  19. Swing Batter-Batter
    I would agree with that.

EXACTLY. I have run into this in the business world multiple times over the last 10 years. Some guy wants to shoot his mouth off in the workplace and screams "1st Amendment" , when the company disciplines him for it. The employer (Twins), would be well within their rights to send him down the road for anything they don't approve of.
  21. Swing Batter-Batter
I was thinking the same exact thing about the Maeda comment.
  22. Swing Batter-Batter
I couldn't help but notice Sano, striking out with the bases loaded, with 2 outs and on 3 pitches, in the 10th. Pretty standard stuff for him. Then, he has a base running blunder in the 11th inning. How can this man possibly have a future with the team?

Really enjoyed Jim Kaat and his analysis. I was initially surprised at his analysis of some of the batters but, then after thinking about it, it made perfect sense. His job was to get those guys out when he played.
