Nola is not a great pitcher. He was amazing in 18 and he was really good in 17 and 22. Otherwise he has been a pretty good and consistent. There is little to no chance I would give the guy 172 million, he was 74th in pitcher WAR last year. (also I think WAR for starting pitchers is kind of a joke, because somehow Nola's 18 season (212 innings ) is better than all but one of Maddux's seasons, better than any Johan season and better than all but two Randy Johnson's and Clemens seasons., ) But you are correct there really are no truly great starting pitchers anymore. (at least they aren't allowed to be great)

Pump the Brakes On These Prospects
TwinsDr2021 replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unless they get even better pitching next year than this year, this lineup (with little to zero depth behind them) isn't a division winning team (at least not to start the season with) As for the article Keirsey (27 in May ) and Williams (27 in 11 days) are not prospects and IMO shouldn't even be on the 40 man. If the Twins can sign them to minor league contracts (or maybe they don't even have to do that) they could be really deep depth in AAA. Camargo seems like a viable solution to the third catcher, Martin and Severino seem like good AAA depth, and they shouldn't be on the opening day roster unless tragic injuries happen in spring training. Lee on the other hand will be 23 and is an elite prospect, so I would be fine with giving him a starting spot and seeing how he does, I don't think the Twins will do that but he is the only minor league guy where this is an option.- 97 replies

The Positive of Reducing Payroll
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And if Larnach plays like he has the last three year? Or Wallner is more August then September and Martin and Severino have really bad rookie starts? Then what? who are the replacements behind them? One of the great things about the 23 season (Compared the prior seasons) was this FO realized how important having depth was. Completely disregarding that and going back to fingers crossed the young guys are the solution with literally no depth behind them is a fools game.- 35 replies

I am not trading Lee or Jenkins, The Twins have Larnach, Wallner, Julien, Miranda and while quite a few people think these guys are still young, I don't and don't believe other teams do either. But they are for the most part major league tested. So maybe one of them, Soto and another young prospect could get something done.

I get Polanco, because there is some depth to back him up. (Lewis,Lee, Julien, Martin?) not sure there is much after that if there is an injury, sophomore slumps or not being good rookies. As for Kepler I can't believe after winning the division and a playoffs series the Twins going into next year with question marks at all three outfield positions. It seems very short sited to start next year with Larnach, Wallner, a questionable Buxton and some Taylor type player. With no real back up ready in the minors.

What a Year for Matt Wallner
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he can hit above .240 the K's don't bother me that much. But if his numbers start to resemble Gallo, I will be ready to see the next outfield prospect. Fingers crossed that he figured out something the last month plus of the season and didn't just do well because of mediocre pitching. Lets good Wallner!!!- 17 replies

what depth are you talking about in the outfield? Larnach and Wallner?? I like the idea of moving on from Kepler, but IMO that mean bringing in a FA OF to replace him. I see no chance a team coming off a playoff series win is going with Larnach, Wallner and ? (I think we have to assume Buxton will be limited at least to the start the year) starting in the outfield with Castro, Martin, Keirsey as the back ups. I think one of Wallner or Larnach will start in LF, the other being depth. IMO the Twins did themselves a disservice having Contreras, Stevenson and Garlick getting most of the action in the AAA outfield last year.

John Bonnes’s 2023 Payroll Blueprint
TwinsDr2021 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I am not sold that is a playoff roster, don't see much depth besides Lee there, But it is a good start -
I personally can't see any reason to accept the QO. Even if he told the Twins he is only going to play one more year he can and I think the Twins would give him more than that. If he thinks he might play more than 1 year why accept less? Like someone said above I can't see the union or his agent thinking it is a good idea.

Two Paths for Emmanuel Rodriguez and the Twins
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
no idea what you are saying. I really, really like ERod and think he has a chance to be something special (I was one of the people saying he should have been moved up to AA last year) But when you start making comparisons to perennial all stars/MVP type players the average fan isn't thinking he could be similar type of of hitter, you are saying he is likely or very likely a perennial all star type player in the making, and that might make sense if they were the same type of hitter at the same ages. But Erod and Soto weren't, Soto was finishing second in the rookie of year in his age 19 season and ERod was playing 47 (Amazing) games in A ball. -
Two Paths for Emmanuel Rodriguez and the Twins
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
That is exactly my point. Juan Soto was .362 hitter in the minors and didn't strikeout and isn't much of a threat on the bases. ERod has strike out 242 times in 183 games. Soto K'd 66 times in 122 minor league games and 643 in 901 games in the majors. When we start comparing every Twins minor player to HOF type talent how can they be anything be let downs? (I mean look how people talk about Buxton, Sano, and others) Why not compare him to Sano, is that a good one? Big power, high strikeouts, good walks and a top prospect? Vientos while not a threat on the bases is a legit comparison, he made the a majors at age 22, highish strike out guy, mid BA, and good power. That is who we should be expecting him to be and hopefully exceeds those expectations. -
Two Paths for Emmanuel Rodriguez and the Twins
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The point is when people throw around comparisons to super star players when the one player just played A+ and the other guy he is being compared to at the same age was having his second straight top 10 MVP isn't a fair comparison to either player. A better comparison maybe be Mark Vientos -

Two Paths for Emmanuel Rodriguez and the Twins
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Just to point out Soto played 116 games in the Majors his age 19 season with an OPS of .923. So I see any comparison with him as a joke, Gallo on the other hand played 36 games in his age 21 season and 17 in his age 22 season, so he seems a little more legit. (even though Gallo's numbers were about the same except up a level in age 20 season) I am a huge fan of Erod and think he could be great and I am not really interested in trading him. I will say to those that want to wait and see to trade him, if he isn't great next year he won't have much trade value left and if he is great why trade him? -
Matt Canterino: Bullpen Force?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Duran, Jax and who? I am not counting Winder, Varland, Headrick, Balazovic, Sands and Alcala success stories yet. I think Canterino could be a star relief pitcher and I think the other FA pitchers you listed could be be good as well.- 42 replies

Trade for a lefthanded starting pitcher? Three options
TwinsDr2021 replied to DJL44's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I am a Sale fan, if healthy he still has some of the best stuff in the league. With that said I am not giving up too much for him. I think the end of his career could be Verlander like. -
I would give you that if he was really good last year and was forcing his way into the starting staff as a 23 1/2 year old, but he isn't. I am not saying he can't be a good major league starter (I hope he is) what I am saying is most of the really good starters have either established themselves by 23 1/2, or were really good in the minors the year before and just are an opportunity away from stepping in and taking the job. I wish him the best and I wouldn't give up on him yet. I will add it is funny that Festa who is 6 months older prospect rating is going up and SWR is going down, and SWR has been pitching at higher levels than Festa.
-
He is only 23, but saying he is years ahead of pace can be misleading. He isn't years ahead of being a stud major league pitchers, but he is probably years of ahead of being a good major league relief pitcher. My hope was he was going to be a stud major league starter and I believe that is gone now, but my new hope is he is a good relief pitcher for a few years.

How Could a Jhoan Duran Extension Take Shape?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am against extending relief pitchers in general, but if Duran and his agent were dumb enough to sign this deal I do it in a heartbeat. IMO this deal offered is at least 15 million to low side. If I am Duran's agent there is no way I am telling him to sign a deal that takes 3 years of free agency for 40 million. -

I have never been a fan of Rocco, the pulling of Berrios does in fact seem like something Rocco would (might have)have done in the past, but I have seen growth in Rocco and don't seem him making decisions like that anymore. There is still plenty of growth left for him. I will say this if you pull a pitcher that had been pitching as well as Berrios after a walk in the 4th you deserve to lose (and get fired).

I can only speak for myself, but it means not spending money on the Twins, not prioritizing watching their games, not defending them when they do the "right thing" and it goes wrong while others are complaining about it, it means not being sad or mad when things go wrong. It is kind of like the last few years of the Zimmer years with the vikes I am just not as emotional involved as I was before. It doesn't mean I don't cheer for the Twins I do, I hope/want them to win every game and the players to do really well.

Is Kenta Maeda Bullpen Bound?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he wants to pitch in the playoffs doesn't he have to be open to this? I mean if not there is no reason to put him on the roster for the 1st round. After that it would have to be between him and Ober for the 4th starter in future rounds, if there are future round.- 20 replies
