My idea for the deal was to get a MLB player that does things the Twins roster doesn't do, play good defense, and is fast and has power, while reducing the players on the 40 man roster. My thought was that Pitt wouldn't get rid of him without getting two major league players or one and one top prospect. I am willing to overpay to do this, maybe remove EROD and add another prospects (GG)?
-
I would much rather them try and pry away Cruz (and move him RF or LF), His is Arb 1 next year. I have no idea what it would take but would a Erod, Wallner, Cory Lewis, Miranda/Julie do it? Is that an overpay or underpay? I don't have much interest in unproven or floundering guys over 25, the Twins seem to have enough of them. But then again with Vazquez leaving next year (fingers crossed) I would do that deal, since he would IMO best the best option for the 2nd catcher.
-
What does this even mean? So the young stud prospects have to compete with guys that have already proven they aren't full time players? Isn't that what the prospects are doing in the minors, competing proving they are MLB players? Besides Jenkins if these guys below aren't given/earned a spot before the 27 season they are just another group of older prospects that aren't likely to be difference makers, As for Jenkins he has been a top, top prospect for a while now, the type of prospect that other teams get up and play to see if they are the real deal. Larnach, Martin, Julien, Miranda are now really just in case of emergency type players taking up 40 man spots, which as of today isn't a big deal because there are worse guys on the 40 then them, which is a real bad sign of this FO. The Twins top 4 rated prospects are: Per MLB Jenkins (13th) (AA) turns 21 next February Erod (41st)(AAA) turns 23 next February Keaschall(43rd) (MLB/AAA) turns 23 next month Culpepper (86th) (AA) turns 23 in December
-
The Twins aren't in total rebuild mode trading Larnach and one back end relief pitcher and FA's to be when you have Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Buxton, CC, Lewis, Jeffers, Lee, that is 3/5 of the rotation (with Festa, Matthews and SWR), and 5 of 9 starters not including Wallner and Keaschall. that is replacing and 1 outfielder (with the Twins top or almost top prospect, Jenkins or Erod), a firstbase man, DH and retooling the bullpen.
-
Larnach is Arb 2 next year, he was paid 2.1 this year, unless they can avoid Arb again next year, that is likely to double or close to double? (somebody can correct me if that assumption isn't correct) The Twins who everybody says has a budget is going to pay that much for a slow, bad defensive left handed platoon player? As opposed to Wallner (770k this year) who is pre-arb next year so much, much cheaper. IMO getting anything for him is better than paying him or not offering Arb and letting him walk for nothing. They are in a similar position that Detroit was in with Castro. paying a part time player or letting him walk, the difference is that Castro was younger, faster, could play premium positions and Larnach is none of those. Larnach is the type of player you trade for when you are in the mix and could use an above average left handed platoon player, not pay in Arb when you are a below .500 team.
-
I don't really need much in return for Larnach, I would be looking for a young guy that doesn't require a 40 man roster spot. Larnach is a slightly above average platoon player, the twins seem like they develop these type of players almost at will, so just clearing up a 40 man spot is good enough for me. (Same could be said about 4 or 5 other guys on the 40 man)

Dodgers 4, Twins 3: Checking Out
TwinsDr2021 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Things like bad calls happen, I am sure you and Twins aren't giving the win back from earlier this year when the ump missed an obvious strike 3 on the Twins hitter and led to a big inning to win the game. After the call on Betts, the Twins had two chances (maybe more if Bader plays the freeman hit better)to still win the game, but Jax walked the guy and Bader dropped/misplayed the single to left, So yes let blame the ump, the Dodgers lack of humility and let Jax, Bader, Rocco and the rest of the guys that played off the hook.- 86 replies

Dodgers 4, Twins 3: Checking Out
TwinsDr2021 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sands pitched two innings the night before, so that was very unlikely to happen. I posted the other day there really was only two options, Duran or Topa. Personally I don't think Duran pitching two innings was the issue, it was all the moves prior to that led him to have to pitch him two innings.- 86 replies

Which young players do you speak of? The Twins have had 3 guys this year below the age of 25? SWR, Keaschall and Lee. Can we stop calling guys 25 and older young and maybe replace that with inexperienced? The Brewers for example have had 6, and a few of the guys that are 25, 26 or 27 are established everyday players (Conreras, Frelick, Turang) then they have guys like Collins, Durbin (Similair to half the Twins roster)

The Central in 2023 was terrible, KC won 56, CWS won 61, Clev 76 and the Tigers 78, They finished September playing against the following and went 18 -9 and won a short series against Toronto. TEX (90 wins), CLE (76 wins), NYM (75 wins), TB (99 wins), CWS (61 wins),Cin (82 wins), LAA (73 wins), Oak (50 wins), Col (59 wins) They basically ran that barely above .500 team out there since (Minus Gray) and we wonder what has happened? Sure they have replaced the Gallo's, Solano, Taylor, Farmer and other bit pieces with other bit pieces, but the core hasn't changed. CC, Buxton, Lewis, Castro, Larnach, Wallner, Jeffers, Vazquez, Lopes, Ryan, Ober, Jax, Duran, Sands, Varland, and ROCCO. It pretty much seems like next year will be the same group minus Castro, unless something major happens, and most likely we on this site will be talking about the same stuff we have been for the last couple of years. Waiting for the way too of players (Miranda, Julien, Lewis, Larnach, Martin, Wallner, Festa, Matthews) to fully develop and some will talk about how they just need more seasoning in the minors to turn them around. IMO this team needs to rid it self of most of these players that haven't figured it out so the next group can be given a chance, Trade Larnach or don't offer him Arb, Trade Julien, Miranda or just let them go, stop holding out hope for these players. (Julien turns 28 before next season, Larnach 29, Miranda just turned 27, Keirsay 29, Wallner 28, Martin 27, Lee 25, Lewis 26/27, Festa 26, Matthews 26, even SWR turns 25 in a month and change) these are not young guys any longer!!!! I have some hope for the pitchers but the hitters should all be in their prime not figuring it out!

Dodgers 4, Twins 3: Checking Out
TwinsDr2021 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
IMO walking Ohtani was the absolute right call. The Dodgers TV crew said the same exact thing, you have to walk him (Lets not forgot he has hit a homer in 5 straight games). I agree with those people that say the bullpen use the prior day was a big problem, it seems like Jax and Stewart aren't great in back to back days. As far as the umps go and missed called, it is part of the game, they missed a strike 3 call on Wallner, but I guess Wallner felt bad because he struck out on the next pitch out of the zone. They missed another strike for Glasnow that cost him I think it was 6 or 7 more pitches, but he overcame (or was allowed to) and pitched 7 innings (106 pitches), IMO Roberts seen how well he was pitching and new how bad his pen is and said I have faith in this guy, and it worked, will it always probably not. This series also reminded me why it is important just to get into the playoffs because anything can happen (Rocco usually makes it harder🤷♂️) in a short series. Finally how many of the Twins batters take the same approach as Freeman does there? (My son said here comes a homer, and I said no way he is too smart of hitter to try for a homer when a slap single to left wins the game) Bader should have caught that (Which I haven't seen anybody talk about), or played it different but......- 86 replies

IMO it seems obvious that the Twins would likely need for at least 9 - 12 innings this series with Festa, SWR and Paddack pitching. That means every relief pitcher was probably going to be needed for multiple innings over the three days with Thursday off that should have been OK. I will never question leaving a pitcher in the extra inning when they have been pitching well with a low pitch count.
-
I have not given up on Lee, he should play (someplace) nearly every game the rest of the year. Same with Keaschall when he is called back up. If he continues on like he has then IMO he is a cheaper version of Castro, where he can be the infield utility player next year, but if another team thinks he is more than that and makes an offer, well I am listening, but it wouldn't come cheap because he is valuable to the Twins as a super cheap insurance/utility player. IMO they don't have much time to figure out Lee and Lewis, it has to be decided this year, With Keaschall and Culpepper knocking on the door, it can't be like Miranda, Julien, Wallner, Keirsay where they IMO left them in the minors longer than they should have.

The only two options were Topa or Sands who had pitched 2 innings the night before. After the Misiewicz injury running 4 one inning pitchers out there you generally don't have many options. They did get 58 pitches from their starting pitcher that good, right?

Kyler Fedko turns 26 on September 21st and currently is in AA playing in his 5th minor league season, He most likely will never be anything but a back up in the majors (that is if he ever makes the majors) (after last year he is lucky to still be in the minor leagues) Austin Martin is 26 in AAA, these are the type of guys (including like Eeles McCusker, Sabato), that fill out the last 1 or 2 spots on an active roster, not guys we or anybody should be hoping are anything more. Did we learn nothing from Keirsay?) Jenkins, Erod, Keaschall, Gonzalez, Rosario, Culpepper, Winokur, DeBarge, De Andrade, Amick (if he can get out of high A) are the type of players we/they need to step it up and grab on fulltime jobs. Young talented guys exceeding expectations at their age for the league they are in. With that said doesn't mean I don't wish them all the best.

On top of that the Dodgers TV crew said the Twins are the worst hitting team in the majors on fastballs 97 or above.

This Front office's early picks have a lot of guys in the majors or at least have played in the majors, (years 17-21)Lewis, Rooker, Contreras, Larnach, Jeffers, Keirsey, Helman, Wallner, Steer, Julien, Encarnacion-Strand, Pitchers Ober, Barnes, Cade Smith, Sammons, Faucher, Sands, Winder, Funderburk, Gipson-Long, Legumina, Headrick, Varland, Petty, Povich, Adams, Festa (Nobody from the 2020 5 round draft, yet) The issue is nobody has really established themselves as a healthy everyday player (Beside Rooker and Ober) From 2022 Lee and Matthews, 2023 Keaschall. IMO the issue is nobody from the 17-21 has stepped up and locked down a position, so we want the next group to step up, but they are still fairly young but generally not the healthiest group of players. (Jenkins, Erod, Keashall,Prielipp and others) And the ones that aren't young got old(er) in a hurry for example 2nd round pick in 2022 Schobel is already 24 (Not the end of the world but generally means not starting caliber player. With that said if Keashall can lock down a position the rest of the year, Jenkins next year and Culpepper shortly after that it completely turns around how good this FO looks at drafting/developing,

Berrios was 22 and Matthew is 25, the 2016 Twins ended up 59 - 103, so letting a young guy learn on the job is different than what the Twins are doing this year? I have hope for Zebby but he feels like a Jax/Sands type of bullpen pitcher IMO. I am willing to give him more chances this year but I am geting close to trying the next guy up. (A prospect not one of these guys brought in from other teams)
-
IMO the Twins core is CC, Buxton, Jeffers, Lopez, Ryan, Jax and Duran (I would say Castro but he is a FA at the end of the year) and that is it I would have said Ober before the year and maybe in the second half he can add his name to the list. The hope is and has been that Wallner, Lewis, Lee, Larnach, Festa, SWR and a cast of others would join that group before heading into their arb year, but not yet. IMO I am not sure that is a good enough core of players and thus why I think the manager and FO should go. The sad part for me is I like most of the players individually and think most are decent major league players, my problem is a whole group together it is severely lacking.

5 years buy out two arb years and 3 more or 7 years or buy out two and 5 more years? I would be fine with 5 total years, but my guess it is going to be real expensive, It starts some place well above Pablo's right? I am not for the extending him any further than that.

That is kind of my point, sure it would be OK to have a Miranda and/or Julien and see what they have because they never have been full time players. And I agree with what you are saying with Martin as well. The problem isn't those guys by themselves, it is they are surrounded by Larnach, Wallner, Lewis, Lee, Clemens, France, Bader, Keirsay and others. That is 5 of 8 positions (SS, CF, and Catcher being the other three) on top of they always have to plan for a outside back up for Buxton because there hasn't been an internal option. And now for two years that back up option has been moved to another outfield position because of the flaws of internal options. I probably shouldn't include Lee because he is basically playing fulltime to see what they have in him (I agree with this decision) and if he continues to play the way he has, IMO he is the roving infield back up, if he improves give him 2nd or third. But if nothing changes the Twins will go into a third year in a row, with the same unproven players as they have the last two (Wallner, Larnach, Lewis, Julien, Miranda), I do get this team has been snake bit by injuries but the next man up usually is some cast off, or probably too old of prospect. Maybe things are changing with Erod, Jenkins, Keashall and Culpepper, but as of now they are all still hopeful unproven players to be added to the list of unproven players. By the time Detroit realized Castro wasn't a full time core player to build around (and pay) he was 25, the Twins haven't figured out what half their team is and they all (except Keashall and Lee) are 25 and some much older.
