  1. I am not writing them off at all, I believe they can become viable major league starters maybe even a Mike Clevinger type pitcher, I am tempering my expectations of them because of age and minor and major league performance and the history of similar players.
  2. Castro was brought up at age 22, was 4th in the ROY at age 23, dipped at age 24 and was better again at age 25. He was Arb eligible and the Detroit realized at 1.7 million (Arb number) he wasn't anything more than a utility type player and rebuilding teams don't or shouldn't spend money on guys like so they didn't retain him. It was obvious he had skills based on what he did ages 22 - 25 and contending teams can spend money on utility/back up players because they are competing for the post season. I don't think what you are saying about him coming up early is what you think it is. By age 25 he was kind of done with his struggles and was hitting his stride going into his prime years. Most of the Twins his age haven't figured it out and are struggling and nobody know if they are full time players or back up/utility/platoon players all while being in their prime years. There are exceptions of course like Rooker or Merrifield (up at age 27, never really struggled but was also pretty much done at age 32 as a good full time player)
  3. Is it bad to cheer against your favorite team just so changes get made? I am getting close.
  4. Gallo at age 25 had an OPS+ of 145, played in 70 games with 22 homers and hit .253, at age 27 he had an OPS of 138, played 153 games with 38 homers. He was a two time All star, two time gold glove winner, Career WAR of 15.6 with 208 homers. After age 27 is wasn't great but was still better than average. (I am not a fan of Gallo's game) but Wallner has a way too go to even be considered in Gallo's league as a player, and Gallo's splits were pretty even against righties and lefties. Maybe some one year Wallner will play over 100 games and we can really see what he had.
  5. I didn't call you lazy, I called the comparison lazy and it was. You threw three Twins legends out there to compare to these pitchers to and those three and these three have nothing in common besides being Twins pitchers. You want these guys to succeed (as do I) and this comparison makes you feel better about it. Because the real comparisons of middle round college that debut around this time and struggle and succeed as starters is a harder comparison to find, because guys like Jax and Sands come to mind. That would be like me saying my son has the chance to to be the next JJ Watt, because they both didn't start as freshman on the football team and struggled a bit as sophomores and not telling you my son is 4 inches shorter and 40 pounds lighter
  6. Gagne was up for 10 games at 21, 2, at 22 and basically full time at age 23. Kirby was up and fulltime at age 24. Hrbek up for 24 games at 21, 2nd ROY at 22. Gaeti up for 26 at 22 fulltime at 23. Bruno up for 11 games at age 20, 5.6 WAR at age 21.
  7. I would make one a first baseman likely Keaschell or Lewis, put Culpepper at 3rd, and Lee at 2nd. Lewis can be DH, and spell Culpepper and Keaschell. Or you make Lee the backup player for all three at 3B, SS and 2B, putting Culpepper at 3rd, Keashall at 2B, and Lewis at 1B. I would have Culpepper up in July before Keaschell and Lewis are back to get his feet wet, if he starts off like Holiday looking completely over matched send him back down and see how he responds. I don't have much faith in Lewis staying healthy.
  8. That is a different argument then comparing them to guys that struggled in their earlier 20's went on to become stars at the age these guys are. Obviously it is great to get guys in the mid rounds round to give the major league club value I don't think you can argue that. I am not giving up on these guys either, but comparing them to guys he did is flat out lazy. I mean Ryan, Ober and Gibson all came up at age 25, and really only Gibson struggled as mightily as these guys have, him and others have improved after that, and those are types these guys should be compared (SWR is slightly different) Cleveland has been bringing up guys around the same age, Logan Allen, Cal Quantill, Aaron Civale, Eli Morgan and others, History shows generally those type of pitchers aren't the guys you can rely on for multiple years. The Twins have gotten good years out of Ryan and Ober but for the most part they hit the ground running. My point is if you are going to compare players, do a bit of research and compare them to actual similar players. (Maybe compare them to Cory Kluber, up at 25 struggled and went on to be pretty darn good if you want to enhance your thinking of the player)
  9. ummm, because history tells us pretty accurately how good a player is going to be based on when they first see the majors. Is it 100%, no for sure not. But the list of players that come up after age 24 and succeed (for multiple years) in a full time/starter type player is a heck of a lot shorter than those that come up earlier. Looks at the names I mentioned that are better comparisons for a few example. You and others might not like using age as a stat to predict how players careers will most likely end up but it isn't any different than any other stat that is used in the game today. I mean why do teams shift? Should it be strange that Castro is a pretty good player? I mean the Detroit thought he was going to be pretty good he was up at age 22, yes it took him a couple of years to figure out, but since he was up early he was given the chance and was an all star at age 27, christ half of the Twins players they are still trying to figure out is his age or close to it. I mean I keep hearing any player in the Twins minor league that is 22 is a couple of years away.
  10. Culpepper turns 23 in the off season, there is no reason he can't be a regular someplace next season, if it is 27 he will just be another in the line of 24 year olds the Twins are still trying to figure out.
  11. Another comparison of Twins prospects to legit all star type players when in reality the only thing they have in common is their are pitchers on the Twins. Funny you mention Viola, Radke and Santana. Santana age 25 season won the Cy Young, age 24 7th in the Cy Young, Radke age 24 season 3 in the Cy Young, 25th in the MVP age 25 season all star. Viola age 24 season 6th in the Cy Young, Yes all three of these guys struggled early in their career ages 21, 22, 23, Festa has struggled in age 24 and age 25 season, Oh same with Matthews, SWR was decent his age 23 season but is struggling again at age 24. I don't think anybody is looking for them to dominate, But wouldn't it be nice if they were a bit further along then they are? By the time the three you mentioned were in their prime years, 26-29 they were proven and humming along, These three still huge question marks. Maybe compare them to the Scott Baker's, Kevin Slowey, Nick Blackburn, Kyle Lohse, Adalberto Mejia, Scott Diamond, Brian Duensing's of the world because they are WAY, WAY closer to them then the three you mentioned. If you want to be generous maybe Kyle Gibson (maybe he is the best comparison)
  12. Since coming back from injury Wallner is 11/67 with a .243 OBP with 5 homers, but three of those coming in games they Twins lost by 10. He has pretty much been playing every game, He is being exposed by playing time? Is it just a slump? In yesterday's game he came up with guys on 1st and 2nd with 1 out in the 9th and popped up a pitch to 1st he should have hit off Target Center. But when you are slumping this bad and only down by 1 run, a 3 run homer isn't what is needed, Maybe it is the time to square of the ball and hit it somewhere, instead of trying for the homer. It is at bats like this that make the Twins hard to watch.
  13. I like Wallner and think he should be and should have been given more opportunities to play every day. But this is his 4th year and has played in 206 with 721 plate appearances and his OPS against LHP is .539, so I have a huge problem saying he has hit 40% better than the league unless you add a huge qualifier like when he plays and when he plays solely against right handed pitchers. Plus this year is slightly better than average with 109 out of 141 being against right handed hitters. So failed is a bit strong (Like I mentioned above) but the Twins don't play him like a full time hitter and he requires a platoon so...... Each player only looked at by themselves might not be a failure or actually decent, but as a whole, they all require a 40 man spot and not one has taken the bull by horns and grabbed and held on to a spot, either for injury, needing a platoon, or being bad. As for Lee, he seems like he might actually being doing this, but at point or another so did Miranda, Julien, Larnach and Lewis. As for Keashcall I really like him as well (as I do Wallner and Lee) but right now he has 26 plate appearances, so get healthy and stick him in the lineup everyday and see how it goes. As for the pitchers SWR turns 25 in September, and Festa and Matthews are already 25, again not old in the grand scheme of things, but you would hope they would be a bit further along by now., no? Prospects like Festa, Lee, Matthews, SWR are not "Failures" but they aren't successes yet either. I mean all three of those pitchers average less than 5 innings per start with ERA's over 5.
  14. I am not defending the owners in anyway, but I could understand their thinking on payroll if they are thinking we signed Lopez and CC to big contracts and Buxton to a decent one, let you spend 30 million on a catcher, and this FO is has been here how many years and can't develop enough young/cheap talent to fill in around them around them. I mean expanding the payroll just runs cover on how bad this FO has been on developing healthy everyday players? No? I mean we all know Buxton's injury history and they haven't developed one player capable to be a back up, they have to bring in a player every year just in case? They haven't developed one full time starting left fielder, right fielder or 1st baseman? Second and third has been a carousel of players? and all the best starting pitchers minus Ober have been brought in. Just saying!
  15. I been a big advocate, for going for it in years they are doing well (basically every year but 21) but was told the next year or two was really the open window we can't trade guys away, well here we are in 25 with one successful season and talk about another rebuild, which would put the Twins window back out three, four, how many years? In that time the Twins would have won one playoff series and never really attempted to go for it (maybe signing CC was the big attempt but that was never enough), played terrible hardly watchable baseball most of the time and lost fans. I don't need every year to be world series type team, what I am looking for is when things go right, go for it, I know it probably won't work, but it is that kind of excitement that brings fans to games, knowing their team gave it there all when things were going good. I am also fine when things aren't moving pieces because again that brings excitement for the next possible big time prospect. But this standing pat, not trading for or trading away players (or just on the edges) gets Stale and boring, which I guess is fine if it is working. Plus the Twins seem to love to let prospects hang out (develop)in the minors for way too long and by the time they are up they are old by baseball standards and way less exciting then the young guy coming up that everybody is hoping to be that hall of fame generalization type talent. (And yes I understand most guys do need that time but aren't really ever full time, put their name in the lineup card everyday type players)
  16. agreed, my problem with this FO is they seem so dam reactionary to the trends and always are late to the game, by the time they get there the next trend is starting and they are reacting to that one. To your first point, I would love to turn it over to youth, but who? They are hurt or way back in A or A+? They have tried to turn it over, but this round of prospects have failed, Miranda, Julien, Larnach, Wallner, Lewis, and every starting pitcher they have brought up. (Yes, failed might be a bit strong for some of these guys because they have been decent at times or injured) Jeffers and Ober are really the only two guys they have developed where we can say everyday starters? right? It seems they are bringing in FA agents every year to fill most positions (or to back up and then turn into starters because of being terrible or injured)
  17. Comments like this imply it. Which seems like the better option for a 16 year old girl? To play baseball with the boys and undoubtedly get teased relentlessly for their gender. girls that lost will either Or if they're massive losers they'll make excuses their entire life about how one high school girl impacted them. Comments like this belittle girls feelings. And until people start listening to the women/girls and why they may object to this or how it makes them feel, there will never be a solution. Calling girls bigots, losers, complainers or anti-trans isn't furthering the conversation or helping resolve the issue it only divides people further. And by the way one of my daughter's best friends is a Trans women, and we have had many conversations about this subject they all have been respectful and IMO very constructive. She hates this argument about Trans girls in sports because there are so many other things that should be talked about, like understanding them, caring about them, respecting them for who they are and she says she understands that while she is a girl she isn't exactly like her other girl friends respects that. Have a good weekend.
  18. You would lose that bet, I live in a City that plays in their conference. My son's girl friend plays high school softball and competed against the pitcher. Now, she says it didn't matter they were going to lose to Champlin Park regardless of who pitched but she has plenty of friends on other teams that believe it is unfair because they thought they had a chance of winning if somebody else pitched. Plus they call Jefferson the state Champion, which isn't fair to the girls on Champlin because a few pretty great players and now have to listen to being called fake champions. Do I care about Minnesota 4A softball, not really, Do I care about the girls that had to play them? I do, I also know my son's girl friends parents and many others are upset because they don't believe it is fair they are playing against a trans girl. The parents were upset that the school said they girls were not allowed to express their feelings if those feeling went against this. Is that OK to shut up girls? As for if this person was forced to play baseball with the boys, most likely they wouldn't have made the team, but if they did and the boys did what you said, they should/would be punished, but again you are saying this person's feelings are more important then the girls feelings. I find it sad how little empathy people have for girls. I have empathy of Marissa, she isn't doing anything wrong and is following the rules in front of her. I have empathy for her that there isn't a fast pitched open league, and that is probably the solution to sports that played different for boys and girls. I have empathy for her and her teammates (if she plays next year) on the spectacle it will be.
  19. Have you talked to any of the girls that played Champlin Park to ask them if they think it is fair? What does it matter if there is 1 or 1000 there will be girls affected by it, but I guess screw them and their feelings? In high school sports there is two divisions Boys/Open and girls, if you are born Male or good enough to compete go to the boys division, if you are born girl you play in the girls division unless good enough or want to try to compete in the boys division. Girls that have done this have been cheered on and encouraged for years. The thing the other side forgets, how are you going to stop boys from making a mockery of this? I mean all you need is a boy or two to say they are girls and the will walk over every girls sport.
  20. Got it, so it is a super divisive movie/TV quote to shut down the conversation. Not unlike others might say on the other side of the issue to shoot down constructive conversations. TD is a wonderful place for things like this to be said /s
  21. I am confused about the point of the article (I have read multiple times) , is the point that he wore it but won't comment on it because of the current culture? Was it a way to get an article in during pride on the progress that has been made but still a ways to go? Is it a virtue signalling? all contentious parts/details on why we are where we are today were left out (probably a good thing). Or is it just an editorial article, because this sentence screams that - "That said, athletes cannot effect all the cultural and policy change we need right now" but again left out what policies the author believes needs to change?
  22. What does this even mean? I agree Trans people should have ALL the same rights as everybody else, be respected and not discriminated against for being Trans. But I can also believe women/girls shouldn't have to pay the price for that. I can be happy for Willi for doing wearing this, back trans people's right and still disagree about Trans girls in girls sports. Does this mean I should die? Do I have a problem with my heart?
  23. Honest question, Who are you sitting to get this guys more playing time? Since June 1st Castro - .357/.419/.589/1.009 Buxton - .302/.426/.581/1.007 Lewis - .367/.457/.533/.990 Lee - .373/.396/.588/.984 France - .283/.338/.383/.722 Larnach - .250/.302/.417/.719 Jeffers - .237/.356/.342/.698 Bader ..171/.0=255/.366/.621 Wallner - .130/.216/.348/.564 Clemens - .107/265/.214/.479 Correa - .196/.241/.255/.496 Vazquez - .103/.212/.241/.454 You can't win with Wallner and CC being this bad, and to be honest Wallner has been worse then the numbers say because most of terrible SLG number comes from 2 homers that were hit in games they last by 10+ plus runs. But you can't these two either, right? Is giving more at bats to other mediocre players a real solution or just hope somebody gets hot?
  24. Why these guys and not ERod, Culpepper or any other prospect that actually has a MLB future? I would assume Lewis, Lee, CC, Jeffers, Buxton aren't going anywhere. Wallner stays, that leaves spots for Keashall, Erod, Culpepper with spots and Larnach if he doesn't go, there is no reason we every have to see a lot of Keirsey and Bride.
