  1. I still think Buxton is better long term, but Correa was a very highly rated prospect going in, so it was never a huge reach. Can't judge this either way for at least a couple more years.
  2. Sorry, I should have said "a" not "the".
  3. I also think the so-called public disputes within the clubhouse are played up by people like Gleeman significantly more than the actual players themselves. That fight with Morneau shook him up so much he rebounded to be a MVP and to call Hunter a critical mentor in the process. The public statements, while interesting to writers and posters, mean approximately zero to his teammates when it comes to relationship within the clubhouse and performance on the field.
  4. Did you hear that correctly or did I? I thought he said they had starters rated highly that got drafted just ahead of where they took the relievers. So the reason they took so many relievers was in response to the way the draft was going, not because they specifically targeted relievers.
  5. Plus Ruiz was the main piece used to acquire Gattis in the offseason. I do think the strategy gets slightly overstated, even if they had drafted Buxton, they would have been able to afford McCullers too, just not Ruiz. It was never a 3 vs. 1 as often portrayed. And after all that, it is still about 50/50 they took the best guy in that draft anyways.
  6. This is often lost when people continually cite the Cardinals. It was kind of a perfect combination of starter slots filled, young arms ready who also needed to limit innings, and a need for a competing team. It worked for them at that time, but isn't the only model. Meyer is probably past the point where this is a comparable developmental strategy, but I do think that Berrios could be an intriguing candidate for this type of treatment, either later this year or at some point next year.
  7. Don't underestimate the genius of signing Pelfrey to multiple contracts for 3 years to make sure they see some results! But to answer your question, I don't think they sign an extension mid-season, mostly because Pelfrey and his camp wouldn't give them a friendly one.
  8. I'm more nervous about the starter than the backup.
  9. This is another classic showdown between front office and field staff. Field staff would take him in the bullpen right now, and some of conversation in the spring from the field staff was that bullpen would probably be where he ends up. Front office wants to keep up the possibility of getting him to start again soon, after temporary movement into the pen. I support keeping a pitcher developing as a starter as long as possible because the payoff is larger, but probably time to make this permanent.
  10. I'd be surprised if there is an in-season extension for many reasons. Hunter on the other hand.
  11. I get the sense they want Pelfrey in the rotation for the rest of the year.
  12. Nope. Split seems to be between those he said he didn't learn anything and those who said he had nothing to learn in AAA. And Vargas was down for 3 weeks.
  13. Question to ponder - why would I possibly be sore? The opening line was a little bit (ok lot bit) of hyperbole to match the spirit of the forum surrounding this move. Seemed only appropriate. Regarding the move, just because I think Vargas needs more time to develop and that overall this move won't do much and will likely cause other problems, it doesn't mean I'm the least bit upset about it. In fact I look forward to being really, really wrong.
  14. Rosterman, your wife is brilliant.
  15. Also a decent chance that Pressly and Graham will be. Argument can be made for Escobar, Fien, possibly Herrmann. This actually strikes me as a pretty good percentage for a team.
  16. All the more reason why his performance at this moment relative to other first basemen is meaningless.
  17. Nice, just enough ambiguity to allow any conclusion that you want, likely based on your underlying feeling about the front office in general. I appreciate the links, that is what I remember.
  18. I really like it. Houston is leaking a little bit recently so they are going with talent at a place of need to keep it going. Would be something to see Twins follow with Meyer now and Buxton and possibly Sano/Polanco soon. Maybe even Berrios if the opportunity presents itself.
  19. Well he is the big news today and they cover completely different aspects of the situation, but I wouldn't be offended if they were merged.
  20. In this catastrophe of a scenario, I would take some solace in Thielbar having 55 games and 50 innings and Tonkin having 46 games and 38 innings of experience. And that is why I would call up Meyer basically right now. If a 4th guy is also needed, I'm sure Oliveros can break in with some low leverage innings at that point. I'm not especially concerned about 27 year old career minor leaguers to be completely honest. I have nothing against him getting a shot, but there are others ahead of him.
  21. Now that the voices crying in the wilderness have been heard and Vargas has triumphantly returned to propel the lineup onward to its destiny, what do people think is an acceptable triple slash for him going forward? I think an absolute bare minimum of 250/310/420 is needed considering what little other value he brings to the table. This would be a decent jump from his current season line of 248/295/362, but a slight decrease from last season of 274/316/456.
  22. Could be true that it is to buy time for Polanco. My biggest concern with this move is that watching Escobar every day at SS is going to make us long for the days of Santana. Mixed things on the readiness of Polanco's defense too.
  23. I'm the notorious optimist but I don't think it would even take that long. And I agree with your general sentiment (in other posts) that the bullpen is something of a ticking time bomb, based on usage and talent. That's why I don't get the strong calls for Oliveros. He's fine as far as guys that shuttle between AAA and MLB are concerned, but the Twins already have 4-5 of those guys in the mlb bullpen and 1-2 in AAA other than Oliveros, and those guys don't need to be replaced. If you are going to make a change, roll with the talent and the guy that can actually be a difference maker over the rest of the season.
  24. Not so much grasping as not especially convinced by all the arguments being used. It's OK that we disagree. I find the logic of the front office perfectly comprehendible. Not that hard. The Hicks OPS reference was just to make the point that citing Vargas OPS in AAA didn't mean much
  25. I think Ryan ran out of options. Hope Vargas lights it up. I still think he needs more time.
