  1. The Twins have kept up May and Gibson (both making minimum) over Milone who was guaranteed over $2mil, so last sentence is far from a sure thing.
  2. At this point he can refuse a minor league assignment and still get paid. Highly unlikely a team claims him and picks up the whole contract.
  3. Yes, they could use the option year next year, or even the year after that. Options don't "expire" but there is a certain service time threshold (I think it is just short of 5 years) where a player can't be optioned without his permission, or else he has to be placed on waivers and thus subject to being claimed by another team.
  4. Yes, I know that is how options work. He hadn't been optioned yet this year, so this move burns his last option year, meaning that it can't be used in future seasons. They had the choice to keep him down on the rehab assignment and not burn the option year yet but they chose to do it differently.
  5. Top 5 is Swanson, Bregman, Rodgers, Tate, Tucker I think Twins take any of those 5 if they drop. I also think there is a slight opening for Aiken.
  6. I'll say that this strikes me as the most realistic 1-5 I have seen. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft/mock/?season=2015&version=3&source=Keith-Law-Mock-Draft Has Twins still on Allard.
  7. While money always play a part I don't think it was the primary reason. I think the Twins had every intention of him doing a typical rehab and then coming back up, but he clearly hasn't been doing much of anything in Rochester, so this was the way of showing the seriousness they are taking the situation and that he actually needs to do something to get back up. Burning his last option is a cost to the Twins as well.
  8. I generally think if the next President can avoid putting significant boots on the ground in the Middle East and not cause another financial bubble to inflate and burst, it should be considered a success. Marijuana legalization, government surveillance, prison sentencing reform, Obamacare reforms, rethinking policing strike me as the big domestic issues coming up. I also think income inequality will be a big talker and potential cause of unrest if not handled well.
  9. I missed the rest of this discussion, but define "us" in this. Should people in the US actually care if Baghdad falls? The main issue that I see is that no local ground force is willing to stand and fight. Air power alone can't do it, and I think we are right to not send significant ground forces to protect land in Iraq.
  10. If he actually misplayed the ball (which is debatable) it wouldn't be better in this specific case. But it also wouldn't be an indication of the original point of this post, which is more what I was replying to.
  11. Even if he did misplay the ball, which I am quite skeptical of, it seemed he did it with a plan, not because he was scared of the wall or warning track. In flight he determined he couldn't make the catch so he tried to make a good play in freezing Pedroia, it almost worked.
  12. Interesting. I see keeping Arcia down as among the most justified things this front office is currently doing.
  13. Scoring more runs than your opponent is the true point of baseball. But yes, getting on base really helps half of that equation.
  14. Clearly Walker only performs as part of an offensive cluster. He'd fit right in with this team.
  15. Avoiding outs is the most important thing you can do as a hitter. OBP measures that. It is never, ever a bad thing to avoid making an out.
  16. Ideally it would be Pressly and Tonkin that replace Boyer, with Oliveros and Achter taking the Pressly/Tonkin role. Or, if they really wanted to get it right, Meyer to take the 7/8 inning role. Plus, I am fully on board with trading assets to shore up the bullpen, if it is actually an upgrade.
  17. I don't think he has an ax to grind. I just don't think he, like any national writer, has full context of a team. I liked the article and I don't dispute the troubling nature of overperfomlng BaseRuns to the extent the Twins have. I just don't buy it is a static situation that guarantees their doom.
  18. I didn't call it the "beacon of reason" those are your words. I said I was impressed with what he says. I am. I find it a good and enjoyable show, but I don't hang on every word and see it as literal truth. And I'm not getting all that frustrated with the criticisms. I'm just not sold on the solutions. And I think you are wrong about the Vargas demotion. It is 100% about him and his development.
  19. No it doesn't. That is why having Oliveros and Achter (and others) in reserve is a good thing.
  20. While all that is true, I think not blowing leads is a functional bullpen. Without checking, I imagine they have probably held as many tie games (of not their own doing) as well. So if they can be close to even in tie games and blow very leads into losses you can live with that. All that said, I am certainly on board with an upgrade in the pen. I just don't see it with Achter and Oliveros, they are more of what the team already has there. Obviously Stauffer should have never come back from the DL, but that strikes me as causing a shortage of bats, not actually impacting the bullpen in a meaningful way, because they should have 7 guys. Stauffer pitching against Toronto was a fluke, and not exactly clear that either of the other two guys mentioned would be able to get into a third inning effectively.
  21. To clarify, I would completely be on board with checking in on Tulo. Just don't think you are getting him without one of the big three.
  22. OK, if that happens, that would be a disaster. I thought you meant burn through Pressly and keep Tonkin. I didn't want to conceive of something so foolish. That would really, truly be the first roster move this year that I could not comprehend. (Not to say all the other moves have been right, just that there is some defense behind them)
  23. He really isn't. Firmly in the 10-25 muddle
  24. Oh it is definitely homerism, but I'm also not trying to pass myself off as an objective national writer.
  25. If they kept Tonkin and sent down Pressly it wouldn't be a disaster. Pressly is better, but relatively close. With Boyer, Fien and Graham there isn't a dire need for both of them.
