  1. You know what's true about a buy low? You'll convince yourself by the numbers that the guy has no talent...that's what makes him easy to get. A guy that can play all over the outfield, has speed, and was once highly thought of? What the hell is the downside given where we're at with this outfield? Looks like a move with some upside to me, however slight it might be.
  2. These are all hitters. The Twins appear to be very willing to push hitters aggressively but are the polar opposites with pitchers. Very strange. And if you want to cite Berrios or Thorpe...let's wait to see how that goes once they hit AA. That's where the difference starts to manifest. At the very least you can say the Twins tolerate far more glaring warts in their hitting prospects than they do their pitchers when considering call ups.
  3. Yeah but then the world would EXPLODE. We'd have human sacrifice, cats sleeping with dogs, mass hysteria!!!!!
  4. I think there are more than a handful of decent CF options and I don't care if it's more than one year. A guy like Rasmus would be an excellent buy-low option for example. It's not like the Twins have any OF spot solidified at this point - plenty of places to slide guys around.
  5. Very well said. Adding a player doesn't block a player necessarily. The team's actions (and tendencies in this case) are what blocks players. That said, the Twins bizarrely different standards for young hitters vs. young pitchers makes me pretty comfortable saying Buxton won't be blocked no matter who they sign.
  6. Hicks needs to hit AAA before I'd want him anywhere near the big league club. We've set this kid up for failure too many times by rushing him, I don't want him rushed back based on 150 ABs in AA.
  7. Unless he makes AAA whatever he's doing right now really doesn't matter much to me and hopefully doesn't matter much to the Twins.
  8. You mean...I'd have reason to turn on the games at night?
  9. Not a huge fan, but they either needed to trade or extend him so in that sense it's a good move.
  10. Boston got some interesting buy-low value for Lackey.
  11. This trade is great! Awesome value for a friggin wavier claim earlier this year! And a bonus in that Vargas is up and that DH spot people were wanting to give to Morales instead actually might get manned by a big part of the future for the rest of the year. That's tremendousy exciting. (And further reinforcing about how much more aggressive with position players this team is than pitchers. Wow) Now, get rid of Correia and Willingham and you've already turned a successful deadline into an amazing one.
  12. If they did....what's the difference?
  13. They don't already? As Sweetone said.....the outfielders could get in a round of musical chairs between some pitches if they wanted to. Managers tell people where to pitch, when to swing, where to play, who gets to hit, who gets to pitch, etc. the notion that shifts are categorically different is what's ridiculous.
  14. Great post chuchadoro. If we're going to keep discussing can we pick a range for this bad luck? We seem to be talking about this year, but then every time someone points out worse luck this year someone runs back to something from five years ago (ex. Morneau's injuries) to add to the "Twins are unlucky!" meme. It's a constantly shifting range of luck basically designed to purposely select examples to fit the argument rather than any genuine comparison. Twins have had a couple gut wrenching bits of bad luck to their key prospects. But that is FAR from qualifying for the "worst luck" title around baseball this year. It's normal to have injuries and key setbacks. Can we stop being so "woe are we!", it's not justified.
  15. Anyone else noticed it seems to really pick up in the afternoon/evening?
  16. I was going to say the same thing - shoulder injuries are notoriously tricky to treat and get past. Let the kid rest, he's done more than we could've hoped for this year already.
  17. David Kahn would've loved this guy!
  18. Yeah but don't let that get in the way of a good fallacy.
  19. Regardless of anything else, this is the part that made the least amount of sense. It was clearly a personality thing. (Which, to the Twins defense, Worley seems like a punk.)
  20. Nick - key pieces go down all the time for teams all over the league. Teams have setbacks or disappointments all the time. (Again, Texas. Or KC and their prospects. Or Colorado) The truth is that the Twins have had SOME bad luck and (as you freely admit here) with no context at all you've declared it a calamity without really comparing it to what other teams face. I doubt anyone would take major issue with your thesis if it was "Bad luck worsens an already bad situation". "Unluckiest" in baseball? That's just so demonstrably overblown.
  21. And if you don't like Texas - how about the fact that the Rockies are now dealing with Tulo forcing himself out in the midst of a season crushed by injuries to Cargo, Arenado, Cuddyer and using 13 different starters due to injuries/performance.
  22. That's not my issue at all. My problem is that you somehow took the second paragraph and made them the "unluckiest team in baseball". How are a handful of injuries that unlucky? You and Brock both attacked mike's strawman...but aren't you both propping up the same kind of strawman? Is there nowhere inbetween incredible luck and the "unluckiest"? This team had SOME bad luck. The worst luck in all of baseball? Cmon. By the very nature of that degree of hyperbole you start to look like you're making excuses. Texas had their Buxton and Meyer IN THEIR LINEUP (dealt an all-star to make room for one) and lost them along with about 57 other guys and we're the unlucky ones? (And don't shift the argument to 6-7 years ago, you used examples from this year and I'm doing the same. Just staying on the same ground as the argument you presented) My issue isn't to eliminate some bad luck from the Twins equation, but highlighting it? It's not even close to the top of the list. We've been spoiled by our health the last two years if two significant injuries the the major league roster and a couple setbacks in the minor leagues are enough for us to call it an apocalypse of the unluckiest proportions.
  23. Span would make a ton of sense if he comes available. I'd love to see them gamble on Rasmus too.
  24. And here's another analysis from 2013: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2014/3/5/5471442/estimating-number-of-runs-saved-by-infield-shifts
