  1. If it was possible, they sure made it seem like it wasn't. We would've been broad too, like any kid younger than 13. So that steered us in a different direction.
  2. You can do both?
  3. Yeah, in AZ we had to leave a bed open and we could be placed with any kid, at any moment's notice, at any age. With two little ones of our own, we just weren't comfortable with that. We want to help, but that wasn't going to be the way for us.
  4. No one has to love Biden. Just love Not-Trump.
  5. When we started our adoption process we specifically avoided fostering for exactly that reason. It isn't a well run or incentivized way of doing things. Mandated preschool will help so many families and so many kids at a key age for learning.
  6. One thing I wish was talked about with this is the need for universal preschool. People assume school is like it was when they were a kid. Well, when I was in kindergarten I remember spending most of my time playing and learning social skills. Now, if you can't add and subtract to 20 and read by the time you leave kinder you are behind. My son entered kindergarten reading while some kids couldn't even recognize letters. The disparities are real and have real harm to the confidence and and success of children. So kill two birds with one stone....get preschool starting at age 3 and start child care savings earlier. Then work on ways to subsidize the three and under care.
  7. The zone blocking scheme wants quick, athletic linemen. The scheme is less man on man blocking and more shifting laterally to block an area and seal off defenders. That's why runners who are one-cut, high vision backs like Terrell Davis or Phillip Lindsay are so successful in those schemes. They don't have to plow people over or use speed to hit holes, it's about letting walls form and utilizing them to find gaps. Kline is a good fit and, luckily, there are a number of linemen available in the draft that do as well. Dillard, Risner, and Bradburry being chief among them.
  8. Warren stumping about child care now. That is an enormous cost for most families. My wife took a job with less salary in exchange for lower childcare costs and I know how crippling it is for many families. I'm not sure "free" child care is the best bet, but time to push earlier preschool and other similar options. Or discounted options for families in need.
  9. That was my concern. Making turnout your primary goal misses the lessons to be learned from 2016. Hillary lost by less than 2% in enough states to win the Presidency. A number of voters in those states were past Obama voters who turned Trump. I could care less about turnout....let's flip those people back! As Musk said - sew up the Presidency and then aggressively push progressive agenda items.
  10. Perhaps you're right. I'm not comfortable relying on the youth vote.
  11. That's simply ridiculous. The Walrus is WAY ahead on that comparison.
  12. I know you're hung up on turnout, but I think you're focused on the wrong thing. The Dems don't need more voters overall. They could turnout millions more and still lose. It's where they turnout and who (especially those Obama/Trump voters) they turn out to vote for. Being more progressive may accomplish that, but it's far from a given.
  13. Correct, the EC may have been born of shenanigans, but likely something like it would have been born either way. Once the two party system took full hold it was going to necessitate some kind of process beyond straight popular vote. We were founded as a republic, in part, by seeing the errors of that sort of system in other countries and the failures it lead to. We can do better than the EC, certainly. But a blog article that asserts the "only" argument for it is tradition is too simplistic to be taken seriously.
  14. I agree. Wouldn't the reverse also then be a little screwy by that logic? I totally agree with affirmative action and much of my logic for it is why there are elements of the EC I'd like to retain.
  15. He certainly hasn't started well. His performance against Cruz has me interested enough to at least give him some rope. Right now I think Klobuchar is the best candidate to win, but I tend to think Biden is the clear guy if he enters. The Dems have 7 or so states they need to concentrate on - Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona. If they even flip PA and Ohio it's over and they win. Several other combos get it done too. It's not a huge mountain to climb.
  16. This team would look to be in such good shape had they dealt Suter one of the last 2-3years. I'm not sure they could've done that with Parise, but Suter had high enough value that you could get out from under that contract and still get a decent return.
  17. Personally, I think people going to their corners would be worse without the EC. That's why it has to be some kind of hybrid that achieves what you're talking about. City voters absolutely matter. So do rural voters. America is more successful when everyone is successful and the simple fact is that the needs of people in different areas of the country can be quite different. We should want candidates to have broader appeal and more understanding of the overall needs of the country. So whatever system we try and work towards, I hope it achieves that.
  18. That's true, she is market testing ideas. But how meaningful is the reaction right now? Isn't the real test for that the primaries?
  19. Trump is the poster boy for the bulk of EC criticism. Yeah, it's not a great system, could stand some tweaks. (Like your suggestion last time this came up) But most people who stomp their feet about it are doing it because they lost. Or, as in Mike's blog link, they just ninja kick an impressive set of strawmen while they pretend it's not because they lost.
  20. Kline is a better bet than Easton at a smaller cost. Solid signing.
  21. I thought Pressly credited the Twins for turning him around? The Astros simply doubled down on it to make him elite. I wonder if we'll end up being more content with the bullpen than many of us thought and it will be the rotation that will be our bane. Just a nagging concern I can't shake.
  22. I disagree, I think his problem has been putting himself in a bad position to be aggressive by chasing junk. Either way, I hope whatever his prior flaw was....it's something he's successfully fixed.
  23. Hitting ST fastballs shouldn't change anything we think. Gotta wait until the benders start coming his way.
  24. Trout is a good dude and I'm happy for him. But my god...that's a lot of money.
