  1. I'm just pointing out some context is important. You can't say his slashline is better and it be a total career (including decline) versus one that is only in their prime. Mauer's position is absolutely important and I think he gets way too much flack. None of that makes the argument of Carews career slash vs. Mauer's a good one. It's still flawed with all those caveats admitted.
  2. I don't necessarily disagree that people are too harsh on Mauer, but you don't think this is kind of an unfair argument? You're including Carew's career when his skills were in decline and right now Mauer's career is all of his prime. You might have a better argument to compare where Carew was at 31 years old to Mauer at 31. They look roughly the same, but I don't have the time to do the math. It's certainly clear that Carew's play his last 5 seasons (age 35-39) brought his numbers down as you'd expect most players of that age to show. So it might be wise to compare apples to apples a bit more.
  3. I think people are putting too much on the concussion and not enough on the lower back pain we heard about. To me, one of those issues is far more likely to have caused the problems we saw last year and that issue (lower back pain) is likely a problem we'll see more of, not less. That worries me greatly, I wish the concussion was the extent of his issues, that'd make me feel a lot better about him.
  4. That's not true. He hasn't really pitched enough to even warrant that much credit.
  5. I hope Rosario does do that - the sooner the better. Hicks too, but Hicks has had 500 ABs to displace a guy like Robinson. It's his total failure that's the problem, not the Twins decision on what to do with him.
  6. I hope it went something like this: MP: I'm pissed TR: How much money did you make the last two years and how many innings did you pitch again? MP: I'll behave. TR: Damn right.
  7. A look at Trevor Plouffe's injury profile gives me plenty of reasons to believe Escobar will get his playing time.
  8. This is really the only type of extension for Dozier I was on board for. The option years were likely going to come at a higher price overall, so we got the moderately discounted arb. years and he got certainty. A fair deal for both.
  9. At this point we don't know that he can even hit AAA pitching, much less MLB. Please, show me how he is getting better.
  10. Look, whether the play the other day was a bad one or not isn't all that important. Hicks' resume includes a startling number of comically awful routes and misplays without one more in the pile. The guy is an average fielder, at best, from what I see and the numbers seem to back that up. The debate isn't Robinson vs. Hicks in terms of talent, I doubt anyone comes down on the Robinson side in that discussion. The problem is that many of us believe that Hicks is so wildly overmatched by big league pitching that the guy can't ever build confidence or work on improved mechanics without miserably failing. I want to choose Robinson to go north FOR Hicks and the idea that he can still bounce back from all these failures and get his production to match his abilities. Hicks has still yet to drive the ball with authority anywhere above AA. It's time to see if he can do it in AAA, let him build some confidence, and come back a long term solution. If Hicks fails again he's done and any future with the club is done. I'd rather give that one last opportunity the best chance possible. If they foolishly call him north with the team I'll be rooting for him, but I think it's a terrible decision. One made worse by having Shane Robinson as Plan B.
  11. The craziness of not wanting to give up on Hicks. To want to give him a few months in AAA to prove readiness. I really worry Hicks coming north is a career death sentence.
  12. Hicks has had two lengthy chances which have resulted in historic awfulness. I'm no fan of Robinson, but it bothers me Hicks keeps getting gifted something he has repeatedly proven unready for. The real stupidity lies in the crummy options we chose to come to camp with, but I am beyond confused as yo what Hicks has done to entitle himself to so many chances.
  13. I really hope this isn't for long. I'm amazed at what this kid has done in the minors only to hear griping from the club on how he isn't ready. While meanwhile we are about to go on year 3 of our CF circus. Just boggles my mind.
  14. I think this is really unsurprising, but man I hope by July first we have a lot more names to be excited about on this roster. May, Meyer, Sano, Rosario, the relievers, etc. To be fair though, this time last year we didn't have as many young guys with stories to pay attention to. Santana, Vargas, and Arcia alone have more intrigue to them than we've seen in awhile.
  15. I'm really not sure how anyone can disagree there is a clear philosophical difference in the way this organization promotes hitters vs. pitchers in the last 4-5 years.
  16. Great post nick. I've been banging this drum for over a year now too. Their expectations for a pitcher promotion vs. a hitter promotion are ridiculously different. Hearing them downplay Meyer's readiness while Hicks .180s his way into the lineup every day is mind boggling. It seems so backwards.
  17. These cuts basically bring my "minimal interest" level in watching ST ball down to a healthy "no friggin way am I wasting my time on that"
  18. So be it. No one, with a straight face, can say Aaron Hicks hasn't been given more opportunity than he's earned to this point. It's about time he played his way into a job.
  19. I'm really not sure you're making a fair comparison. Molitor didn't volunteer that information, he was asked directly and made a short, to the point comment. Gardy's problem was that he would go out of his way to call out rookie mistakes in the media (even, to my memory, unprompted) while the same thing wasn't done to other players. If others start making base-running gaffes and Molitor is inconsistent with his handling, I'll have a problem with that too. Everyone wants the manager to hold players accountable, that wasn't Gardy's problem. It was the tact and consistency with which he did it. Jury is still out on Molitor, so your analogy really doesn't work yet.
  20. I love what they are trying to do to help fix his issues! Now do it in AAA to start the season. Let it WORK for him for awhile and then bring it up to the big dance.
  21. Can Sano play his way back into shape and get his timing back at AAA for a bit and play some third there for awhile before we move him? I'm also genuninely curious, the reports of bad defense or that he's unplayable at third. Where are these coming from? Who are they and what have they said? I see a quote from his manager saying he might stick, why are a bunch of people acting like he's already been declared incapable of the position?
  22. Have you seen what we plan to do in the outfield this year? I honestly think that emphasis may be a thing of the past.
  23. It's not that my mind is changed or isn't, I'd just like a contemporary study that is a little more nuanced and better tailored to really see the impact of the SB. It seems like an under-mined data point in baseball analysis.
  24. I'd like to see a good study on how impactful base-stealing is, one that takes into account more variables and starts with a better correlation. Comparing total stolen bases to win totals seems like a really clunky and ineffective way to study that.
