  1. Lemme see: a 37 year old, under contract for next season, with a FIP in the 4s, WHIP around 1.700 and 15% K%. Lots of Frazors (and better) in the Twins' minors right now.
  2. Salas was gone for Joe Niekro by June and the Catching was a trifecta of Laudner with Nieto and you know whose dad. I don't mind Fryer/Suzuki until Pinto gets the ok to play and he is 100%. hate to say it, but SS (Polanco anyone?) and the bullpen should be higher priorities than catching right now...
  3. 1. Polanco. He should have been their starting SS already. 2. Meyer. Get the kid a pitching coach, please.
  4. They are listing Avilas as available also...
  5. May may be fine in the pen, but the Twins need more than May in their pen to compete. Good to see Duensing getting back where he should be (23.8% K% and 1.03 WHIP in June and July and pitching a no-hitter for July), but other than him, Perkins and maybe Graham, they need upgrades. Pressly when healthy can be one, but even with him and May, they need at least 2 quality arms. And hopefully the 39 year old who Ryan just picked up from the heap, and being lit up in Chatanooga is not one of them...
  6. Depends on how Buxton will turn out. Here are his 1st and second round position players: 1st Round: Revere, Hicks, Harrison, Michael, Buxton, Gordon 2nd Round: Rams, Ladendorf, Goodrum Not. That. Elite. Here is who he passed on his first 3 drafts: Todd Frazier, Josh Donaldson, Jordan Zimmermann, Giancarlo Stanton, Freddie Freeman, Brett Lawrie, Jason Kipnis, Nolan Arenado, Mike Trout, etc. If the Twins did not do so well with Latin American prospects in the Bill Smith era, things would have been really bad...
  7. Good stuff Hard to make those lists. I seriously cannot see how Wimmers could be ranked higher than Baxendale at this point, since he is 2 years older, playing in the same team and Baxendale betters him all the way. If you go potential, Meyer, Burdi, and Reed are all way low. Rogers is way too high. Sorry He ceiling is Duensing or Milone. Cody should not even make the list. He is not even in the organization. Stewart and Thorpe are big question marks. Stewart's K% even when healthy is very worrisome for a guy who has been touted that high. The big elephant in the room is that Deron Johnson does not know how to draft pitchers. Other than Gibson (who is a solid mid-rotation guy) and maybe Berrios (who seems to be) here are Johnson's first round (and supplemental) pitcher draftees: Gutierrez, Hunt, Bashore, Wimmers, Boyd, Bard, Stewart (Jay is too early to call.) Here are his second rounders: Bullock, Boer, Chargois (too early to tell), Melotakis, Eades, Burdi (too early to tell). This has to be the worst group of 1st and 2nd round pitchers since 2007 in any team. Not that he is doing any better with position players, btw, but that's another story.
  8. I think that they will be fine. Former prospects who lost year(s) to injury like Felix Jorge and Randy Rosario seem to be back with force. Gonsalves is likely a top 5 Twins prospect now. Minier and Diaz are knocking on the door. They have done some really good international signings, including this 17 year old (fast forward the linked video to 1 min) who will come North next year and has been making a lot of noise in the Dominican right now. Speaking of, a couple 18 year old Venezuelan middle infielders, Jermaine Palacios & Luis Arraez, who made the jump from DSL to the GCL this year, have their stock quickly rising. From recent draftees LaMonde Wade Jr is opening some eyes at CF in E-Town. Not sure what to think of Nick Gordon (not as big fan as most,) but he is playing in high A, and I am not considering that low minors. Got to give the US draftees some time to make the transition to the wooden bat as well.
  9. Duensing and Stauffer are 4-0 combined. That said, Nolasco has the best FIP by far in the rotation (May was second)
  10. Or Buxton might get injured 50% of the time, and might be a trade that the Twins' fans would applaud... Right now Buxton is in the path of Rickey Weeks and Carlos Quentin who cannot play a full season without hurting themselves. And I'd take a top young catcher over a top young centerfielder any time of the day... Buxton's value is very high right now.
  11. Interesting conclusion. After 85 games this season the Twins are 46-39. After 85 games last season the Twins were 38-47. That is 8 games better than last season. I think that for these 8 games some credit should be given to a. Molitor, and actually having a team that does not give up b. better roster management c. better OF defense (no Colabellos, Parmelees and the like.) I'd love to say that Andy caused the Twins 8 games at the midpoint of 2014 (per your conclusion ), but I think that there is more to the story...
  12. Well... I have been really vocal about the Twins trading Santana High during last off-season because we had seen his peak... Not much value now. The Twins can upgrade at SS by calling up Polanco. As far as C goes, they do need a starter this season and there is not much depth in the organization. They also need arms. I like that "fortune favors the bold". I think that Ryan should grab the phone and call the Mets for a trade that will bring Travis d'Arnaud and Jeurys Familia to the Twins and Byron Buxton to the Mets. Might take a player or 2 either way, but I think that the Twins will be better off in the short and long run this way...
  13. From what I can tell watching him during ST and seeing a bit of him in AA, his timing was not right. He was smashing FBs but has hard time with the slower stuff. Unlike Buxton, whose issue is pitch recognition, Sano's was timing. And, unlike Buxton, who really needs to work on his deficiencies, timing gets fixed with reps. And Sano had about the right number or reps about a month or so ago. Sano and Buxton do not belong in the same sentence now as MLB players. Buxton needs more time. I have always thought that Sano was a better prospect and unfortunately Buxton seems to have a fatal flaw as a prospect: injury proneness. Unless he a. takes care of that and b. learns some pitch recognition, he would have a long way to go to be an MLB regular
  14. I don't think that being buyers will prevent them from being sellers. I do think that since they are competing this season, they should go out there and try to get players who will close holes for them, esp. in the catcher and bullpen positions. Should they "sell" Tommy Milone (and bring back May to the rotation) in a package for a starting Catcher? Sure they should do. They should sell, but they should sell high and bring back players who will make them compete. And yes they need bullpen help, but they better go out and get some above average or better pitchers and not burned out pitchers like the latest one they picked from the heap...
  15. There is absolutely no reason that Polanco should not be the Twins starting SS today. As a matter of fact, his bat is more MLB-ready than Buxton's and they promoted the latter...
  16. Ervin Santana would be a great mid-season addition in the Twins' pen.
  17. I hope that the Twins give Sano a sporadic duty of DH. They can rotate: Sano/Plouffe: 3B/DH Plouffe/Hunter: OF/DH Mauer/Plouffe: 1B/DH if they do that, Sano should be the starting third baseman 8 out of 10 games. You don't give up on kids that young to make them DHs... As a matter of fact, Sano's glove (and arm) at third (now) is better than Plouffe's was at the beginning of last season. And methinks that Plouffe is a better OF than Escobar and/or Santana, so that is a win win. I expect (Danny) Santana for Hicks next.
  18. Not true: There is no reason that Polanco should not be the starting SS instead of Santana right now There was no reason that Buxton (who btw is less ready than Sano) should be in the majors until he can hit the breaking ball. There is no reason that Doug Bernier, Michael Tonkin and Caleb Thielbar should have been promoted. There is no reason not to have Sano in the majors right now, while they are still competing. Move Plouffe to DH and demote Vargas.
  19. I would be disappointed if the Twins induct in the HOF someone who a. left them for more $, even though the Twins made him a fair offer as a free agent and b. when he hit free agency again, he returned in the division to play for the biggest Twins' rival. Nah. He does not belong.
  20. Hunter actually has a pretty good contemporary comparable in the NL. This guy. Who is not a Hall of Famer, and he has identical OPS+ with Hunter, 100 more (or so) HRs and 10 more (or so) WAR. There is no way that Hunter gets in
  21. It's Vavra's fault.
  22. Coke is not it!
  23. tie: Ron Gardenhire and Rick Anderson my favorite part is that they are not Twins
