  1. Check Berrios' WHIP I know that he is 4 years younger. The other 2 are not top prospects. But still they have been pitching better than Berrios. 2 different things here.
  2. OK. Who is the best pitcher of the big club, then, so far? just sayin'
  3. Meyer is a better prospect than Berrios. FWIW, Berrios is not the best performing Lookouts' starting pitcher at this point, as well; more like their third best pitcher.
  4. I think that the Twins might be better of trading 4 out of the 6 mentioned here... (as far as the original question goes, Walker has major contact and pitch recognition problems. No progress whatsoever and if it does not happen, he would wish that he was hitting like Drew Butera if he hits the bigs. His pitch recognition issue is a fatal flaw.)
  5. +1 Unless it is on the podium in the Olympics/World Cup etc when a winner is representing his/her country in an international competition. Anything else IMHO trivializes what the National Anthem stands for...
  6. Nothing different. Business as usual this millennium. The big mouths always got the stories out and got the credit. Hunter, Cuddyer, Perkins, Hunter. Nothing to see here. Souhan has always been the first to throw under the train players with whom the Twins' brass and management had issues (eg. Lohse, Garza, Slowey, Neshek.) Barely worth reading any more.
  7. Meyer has 3 above average pitches (with FB being a plus plus, slow curve - second best pitch- and slider). He is also working on the Change to make 4 pitches. He is not a FB/SL guy by any means.
  8. Six starts. A .432 BABIP, and a career high 6.04 BB/9 will do that. Not time to hit the panic button yet. I am more concerned with the walks than anything else, but he has time. His FIP is 4.21, which is not that horrible. And the worse that one can do right now is to put him on the pen (since he is the only pitcher in the organization with number one starter potential.) The Twins might want to really go down in the root causes here (I suspect they are mechanical as far as control goes) and work with him. Rodrigez, Diaz, Martinez, Hanson & Farris are not exactly glove glovers down there, but that is that and has affected the whole pitching staff BABIP. Too soon to worry. Six games. Check out the Twins' record this season after the first six games.
  9. Or had a real pitching coach... Do not underestimate Neil Allen vs. Rick Anderson when talking about improvement of Twins' pitchers, including May (or Pelfrey)
  10. Have you checked the 'resiliency' of Gardy teams in September the past few years and in the post-season? Not sure how resilient Belly Up is, but that's about it...
  11. History kinda repeats itself. 1958 Senators. Eddie Yost was the All Star third basement and then a kid by the name of Killebrew came along. Plouffe is not quite as good as Yost was, and Sano could be better than Killebrew (already is with the glove...) The Senators never worried about Yost (FWIW, was traded the next season in 1959) when Killebrew moved up. Plouffe can replace Hunter at RF, if needs to be so and call it a day. The Twins will not worry about Plouffe when Sano's time comes (and it better be sooner than later, if this team is still competing this season.) I think that it is telling that the Twins extended Dozier and not Plouffe who actually has a very similar production. As far as the original post goes, yes, Plouffe is driving runs better this season. And I am not talking about ribies (which is a worthless metric anyways.) I really like Fangraphs' "Clutch" metric, which measures how much better (or worse) a hitter does in high leverage situations, vs. content neutral situations. This is the first year that Plouffe has a positive number. Same for Win Probability Added (which is another way of looking at that question, better than RBI, but not quite as good as Clutch...)
  12. No comparison with Hunt whatsoever. Hunt was a College pitcher, did not ever had top of the rotation potential, and is not 6'7" and growing... Tall pitchers have control issues because of mechanics. Fixable with the correct coaching. My point is that Giolito dropped because of silly reasons and there are a whole bunch of teams that are hitting themselves for not picking him. Hooper would be a similar situation. The MLB Draft should about potential in general not fixable issues (like Gioloto's elbow and Hooper's mechanics.)
  13. Was it silly that Giolito was the 7th pitcher selected in 2012? Similar situation. Control problems for tall pitchers is nothing new. You just cannot pass on a lefty with top of the rotation potential...
  14. Interesting ranking. I am fascinated by the dominance of College over HS pitchers, other than Nikorak who is somewhat local to me and seen him pitch. He got helium because of his high 90s FB that HS kids cannot hit. It has the makings for a plus pitch, but that is it. He is fooling around with a curve that does not work for him. One pitch. And control is suspect. Lots of swinging strikes on FB balls. I think that the best fit for the Twins is HS LHP Justin Hooper who BA has for some silly reason at 38. 4 pitches, a couple plus (4- & 2-seamer, 4-seamer topping at 97 borders plus plus) an average curve and a WIP change. Mechanic inconsistencies, but top of the rotation potential from a lefty cannot pass...
  15. Nope. Because nobody would be on the DL yet. Everyone would be day to day and have a single effective bench player to use. Plus May would had been in Rochester and Milone in Minnesota. Good riddance.
  16. This is the second elderly minor league lifer/ DH type to come from the Twins to the Jays and have success. The last one? This guy.
  17. Realistic? Depends on whether the Twins will (gulp) keep contending this season, depends on the performance of the other outfielders, his performance the rest of the season and injuries. I got to think that Hicks is next in line as he is out of options next season and leads all the Twins' OFs in any level with a .318/.396/.545 slash. It is boarderline ridiculous that he is not with the Twins at this point. Don't forget that Arcia will have a spot and Hunter will have another (realistically, pending injuries or trades.) I just cannot see it happening in 2015. Would I mind it if they jettison or bench Hunter for a Hicks-Buxton-Arcia OF? Nope. But realistically it's not happening...
  18. I think that the Twins missed an opportunity of bringing up Polanco and have him starting at SS and relegating Santana where he belongs, on the bench. Polanco's clock started last season as well... Pretty sure that Bernier was selected over Beresford (and the hottest middle infielder in the upper minors, Levi Michael) because he can play SS and 3B (and the OF and 1B in a pinch), whereas the other 2 are pretty much second basemen right now
  19. Again: I do not see the Yankees, Dodgers, Rangers, Giants etc. (teams that fit your description) lining up for Gardy. Do you? If he was that great, a team would do what the Cubs did with Maddon.
  20. This could not be more inaccurate. Gardy as a coach/manager is a Twins' lifer: Was traded as a player by the Mets to the Twins (for Donnie Iasparro) before the 1987 season. He played for AAA Portland in '87 and then he retired. He managed Kenosha (A) in 1988, and Orlando (AA) in 1989 and 1990 and from 1991 on he was the Twins' 3B coach until he was hired as a manager Repeat: Gardenhire knew only a single organization, the Twins. And most of his old friends are retired now. And if "he has such a great reputation around the league", how come he is unemployed right now? I'd think that the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Dodgers would be lining up to get him... Actions speak louder than words about his reputation.
  21. Good for Rosario. This time last season he was in the organizational doghouse because of his own doing. Very important and really happy to see way better roster management with Molitor & Co over Gardy & Co. No day-to-days that linger for weeks and cripple the team. No way that Gardenhire would have used the DL so often this season. Great to see that Molitor does.
  22. I think that one of the biggest differences between GardynAndy vs PaulienNeilie (sic) is the use of the pitching staff. Gardy used to burn the pen. Period. Many times he got a guy up to face a single hitter. And he got him out regardless the result. So, if in the (let's say) 7th inning there was a LRL hitter sequence, Gardy would burn 3 pitchers. The other inane thing that Gardy (nAndy) would do was to take the starter out at the 8th even if he was cruising when he neared 100 pitches and letting the (crappy) pen take over. Molitor is avoiding both mistakes. Also, Molitor does not seem to have pets, does not throw players under the bus and seems to write that lineup based on merit. Gardy, well... (we all know.) And, I am on the record saying, that getting rid of GardyNAndy & Co, is worth at least 5 wins. I think I might had been too conservative on that count...
  23. Interesting to see Shibuya's travel through the organization as a mid-low lever starting prospect plagued with arm problems to his more than decent transition to a pen role. Watched him pitch a few times this spring and he does have a rubber arm. Could be a very useful piece out of the pen, but he will never be a star. That said, gee. If 2 out of 3 outs you record are strikeouts, at least you should be Seth's minor league pitcher of the month, if not having your ticket to Minnesota punched over people like Tonkin and Pressly... Shame. Oliveros should had been it...
  24. Nope. That would be Shane Robinson, both with the stick and the glove. And it is not even close.
