  1. 120 ERA plus means 20% better than the average pitcher who is likely no better than a 4 in a contending team. So at his peak, he was like a 3 in a contending team. Number 2s in contending teams consistently put 130-140 ERA+ Baker had 2 good seasons. 2. Santana was an ace. His ERA+ was 150-180 during that peak. I'd consider Mussina the prototypical #2 in a contender. His ERA+ 130-150 during his peak. Nothing against Baker. He was who he was. I just have more stringent criteria for what a #2 pitcher looks like than you (and ERA+ sucks as a measure, because, like ERA, has a lot to do with the relievers who either allow batters to hit bombs, while you loaded bases or strike them out...)
  2. 4.23 career ERA and 4.02 career FIP a "solid #2" in a contender do not make. Those are numbers for a solid number 4 in a contender. But he never played for a team that contended in the post-season when healthy. Look at Berrios' numbers. After his first season in Rookie ball, he is around 3.20 ERA, 3.20 FIP and 20% K% average with 1.100 WHIP. These numbers just do not project for a top of the rotation guy. They project for a solid #3 in a postseason contender. Likely he will be better than Baker.
  3. You cannot be in rebuild mode while contending. Got to play for this season, since they are there... I'd trade Chargois for Clippard in a heart beat. Clippard is a free agent after this season, so he will not be blocking anyone. As far as AA and below pitchers go, the only one I would think twice about bringing up because he will make the Twins a better team is Tyler Jay. The rest do not belong in a contender.
  4. Change "Thielbar and Darnell" with "Achter and Oliveros" and sounds about right. Or go outside the organization to get an arm or two. If you really want a lefty, I'd love to see what Pat Dean can do in the bigs as a reliever. Thielbar has a 1.623 WHIP and Darnell a 1.688 WHIP in AAA. There is no reason that they will be improvements over Tonkin or Thompson.
  5. Few things about Rosario: - His BABIP is about where is has been when successful in the minors (around .370,) so I don't think that there is a matter for regression here. This is the player he is when he is good as far as balls in play go. - His is a contact guy. Does not walk and does not strikeout much (other than in the bigs.) He can cut his K% to half as he adjusts and matures. - He is nothing like Dozier who is a .250 power hitter with high OBP. Rosario is a .300 hitter with .330 OBP at this best. - He is nothing like Santana who is a .250 slap hitter with lots of Ks and .300 OBP. - Rosario's ceiling: Tony Gwynn. Rosario's floor: Tony Gwynn Jr. That's the kind of hitter he is. - Really glad that he seems to put what happened last season behind him
  6. He is not done, but he has no business being in the majors right now. He is hurting the team at this point. I'd rather see Rosario at Center and Arcia at left.
  7. 43.8 career WAR, no Cy Young awards, 4/18 AS seasons. He maybe borderline belongs to the hall of very good, and that is debatable. He was not a top 10 pitcher in his era. DRA or not.
  8. Who? (was inevitable since he was not in that 1st rounder shot the other day...)
  9. Management proved that they were not serious about "no scholarships" 2 years ago. So that's that And Hughes is not the Twins worst starter. That would be Milone (but Nolasco will take care of that) Going back to the "no scholarship" idea, methinks that Mr Santana should be the one relegated to the pen, because he messed up a tad...
  10. The Yankees tried it in 2009 (and that was their 103-59 World Champion team that blanked the Twins) and he was their best reliever that season not named Mariano. His FB was up around 94. But he was 23. Might worth it, but the Twins have 4 more years and $50 million or so invested in him, and for this front office, that fact makes it a no-go.
  11. You need to add Ruth's 20.3 WAR as a P. It is not even close. Ruth is it. Career wise. He also has the 3 best single season WAR numbers, unless you are counting pitchers
  12. I'd sell Ryan's, St Peter's, Vavra's and Antony's souls to the devil. Seems about right...
  13. Realize that Buxton cannot hit breaking stuff and call it a day Teams have slumps. This is one of them for the Twins. If one said a couple months ago that they will be 4 games over .500 on 6/16, I don't think that he/she would be taken seriously. Well... they are. Enjoy the ride. Teams have their ups and downs.
  14. I'd take Pat Dean and Matt Batts over Rogers as far as LHSP who could be swingmen go, and the 2 lefties at Cedar Rapids (and maybe Corey Williams who is back at it after TJ surgery) Boozer and Theophanopoulos, as far as LHRPs go. Gonsalves is the only LHSP in the system with non-bottom of the rotation starter potential. That will change as soon as they sign Tyrel Jay who I'd place on top of the organization's LHRPs chart at any level (Sorry Mr Perkins) and would reserve to see whether he has any starting potential. That is the guy who can help the Twins in the pen this season, so, I'd say that he is the #1 LHRP option going forward
  15. Any team: Mark Pryor with Steven Strasburg and Ken Griffey Jr being close. Twins: The guy who was drafted ahead of Pryor... (I think that Reusse is getting senile, if he forgot the fans' excitement about Mauer's debut...)
  16. ranger? pretty fitting opponent
  17. Hope this helps. (Not the HP Umpire, the other one is the one who was pushing him around...)
  18. Here is the thing: - if you win more than lose against teams under .500 and - if you win more than lose at home (which are 2 things that the Twins are doing) you will compete. It is pretty simple. I think that the Twins could continue doing this, but they have to beat good teams at home, and getting swept by the Royals after losing to Milwaukee... Will be interesting to see how they will react the rest of the month. If they are at .500 for June from now on, they will compete.
  19. All for Stauffer's DFAing but: "Superior" and "Tonkin" (of 7.74 FIP and 1.500 WHIP with.261 BABIP) do not belong in the same sentence. For reference, Stauffer had a 7.17 FIP and a 2.057 WHIP (but with a .357 BABIP) Tonkin has been Staufferesque this season in the majors. Hope he finds what is working for him in Rochester
  20. Really happy that the Twins picked need (LHSP) for once, instead of someone's kid or grand kid. On the other hand, I don't think that Jay was the best LHP arm available. He has started a grand total of one (1) game in College, but he has a plus to plus plus FB that sits in the mid 90s and peaks to the high 90s (as a reliever) which he commands and controls well, a plus slider, and an average plus hammer curve. Pretty sure that he will learn the change in this system now and he might have success. Endurance is the key here. Speaking of, people are going to say that he is too short to be an effective starter. He is Jimmy Key's size, but profiles more of a strikeout pitcher. I'd take Jimmy Key with 30% more strike outs any spot on a draft. Not a bad pick, and thrilled that the Twins picked a LHP (finally.)
  21. For a competing team, the future is now. Jack Morris at 36 and Dan Gladden at 33 were not part of the future of the 1991 Twins. But it did not matter (well that future did not account to much either, but that is a different story) Check the standings. The Twins have to win now. Does not make sense to think about next season at this point...
  22. Nolasco has has the second best Twins' FIP, K% and fWAR, as far as starting pitchers go, all that with a BABIP close to .400 (May is the best in all 3 categories.) I really do not understand the hate here...
  23. So you want to get Chapman and waste him as the 8th inning guy? Not sure that this part makes much sense... and even if he did, what is "not much" for an 8th inning guy? Even Kepler alone would be too much.
  24. Sure. Hank Aaron is a cheat too. Willie Mays, as well. They did not take the taxi ('rhoids,) but they took the bus (greenies.) Kick them all out or speak evil of nobody.
