  1. Escobar needs to play every day to get his swing going, because the other guy (who got his going) is hitting at the same level and playing horrible defense. Is that more clear?
  2. Escobar has been a part time player and it is hard to compare full time with part time stats (because some people need to play regularly.) If you look as some other stats, the really telling figure is that Escobar sucks because he did not get his swing going (BABIP .225 so far - he averages about 100 points higher) while Santana got his going (BABIP .357, which is a few notches higher than his usual) and still sucks. Clearly Escobar needs more PAs than Santana at this point.
  3. Scary. I agree (almost completely) with Seth. I always have pegged Santana as a likely utility type of player, because of lapses on both sides of the ball. I ranked him 30th in my 2014 prospect list before last season, and said: His presence on the Twins 40 man roster (added last off-season to protect him from the Rule 5 draft) is more of an indication of the system depth in middle infield in higher levels, than his major-league readiness at age 22. Santana will likely begin his age 23 season as Rochester's starting SS, pending Jason Barlett's future with the Twins. With work on plate discipline and pitch recognition and on making the easy plays on defense, Santana can be a starting MLB SS or at worse a utility player His play this season is not news to a lot of us who have been following him. His play last season was. And he did not have a chance to get exposed with the glove at SS. I agree that Escobar should be the starting SS this season and keep the place warm for Polanco. Escobar is a better SS and a better hitter than Santana. Where I disagree with Seth, is that Santana should be given a longer leash. His abilities are like Christian Gusman and Lexi Casilla. Very similar players on both sides of the ball. Santana (and those other two) should not be the starting SS in a competitive team.
  4. Dont' disagree, but Santana has been worse than Vargas on both parts of the game. At least Vargas can take a walk every now and then, and cannot hurt the team by booting balls like Santana. As far as Pinto goes, I'd rather see him catch and the old DH they play at RF, DH.
  5. I'd have no problem with that, if I felt that Meyer can come in and be the number one starter. Might need a month or so to figure the strike zone out, but until then, Hughes and Pelfrey are pretty good
  6. I had to look twice to see whether he was rehabbing there or something
  7. Timeline? 2015. If the Astros and Mets are leading their divisions by 5 games and teams like the Cubs, Rays and Atlanta are up there as well, there is no reason than the Twins should not be competitive in 2015. If not so, they would had not invested in a 39 year old and given a 4 year contract to a 32 year old pitcher with a partially torn UCL. Those moves scream "win now". So does not moving any of their movable assets (Dozier, Plouffe, Perkins etc.) for prospects. So it looks like the Twins are expecting to win in 2015 and so am I. However, if they don't, Pohlad should clear house and bring some people who are hungry about winning, have done it before, and care more about winning games than the food at Target Field, to run the team from top to bottom and build a real contender.
  8. The last 2 seasons, Fien has negative Win Probability Added (which means that the team was in worse shape after he "did his job" than before he came in) and negative fangraphs "Clutch" (which is a composite measure that indicates performance in high leverage situations) in his career with the Twins. This means that he "is doing his job" in less than half the time the past 2 seasons and is consistently below average when it matters. Would love to hear where that 85-90% came off...
  9. Is "being hurt" Fien's excuse for the suckage today? Did the "undetermined arm injury" before or after the gopherball? Or is "undetermined arm injury" euphemism for "suckage"? I hope that Oliveros gets up to replace Fien and anyone else to replace Stauffer.
  10. Hunter a "class act"? Why? for punching a teammate in the locker room? for declining a good offer from the Twins to sign up elsewhere as a free agent? for returning into the division and playing for the strongest team in the division? for multiple incidents of foot in mouth disease in public forums throughout the years and attacking reporters? Nope. He is not even an "aging veteran". He is an "aged" player. The oldest position player in the majors. He is what he is. And TR has a horrible habit in bringing in old ex-Twins who are over the hill. (Kubel, Guerrier, Bartlett, Guardado v2, Trombley v2 etc) and sign geriatric players. Nothing unusual. The numbers (and the videos and the scouting reports were out there on Hunter this off-season.) The blame is on Ryan. Stick a fork in him. He is way overdone.
  11. 6.26: Tommy Milone's FIP. Worse. Than. Tim. Stauffer's. (and Nolasco's, of course.) And a Fastball that can be wind-aided Easy decision. No Rocks, no hard places. The real decision here is who should be keeping Duensing's place warm while on the DL, Milone or Thielbar. That's about it...
  12. Do you all remember when TR's first choice for a catcher was Saltalamacchia, second Pierczynski and third Suzuki? That was a bullet (or 2) dodged. Somewhat.
  13. It is always good to win a series on the road against a team that is not playing up to its capabilities. However, the real test for both the fortitude and the ability of this team, is what they do in this series at home against the division leader. If they sweep, color me a believer...
  14. The Twins can do 3 things right now to improve the team: - DFA Schafer, recall Hicks as the starting CF. - Option Vargas, recall Danny Ortiz, (.250/.333/.425, Schafer's 40-man spot) have him and Robinson rotate at LF and have Arcia and Hunter rotate at DH, until you find a taker for Hunter - Optiona Santana (.203/.203/.237) have Escobar and Nunez as the starting and back up SSs and recall Pinto and have him as the primary catcher with Herrman and Suzuki (.204/.291/.327) backing him up as spelling Mauer at first, until you find a taker for Suzuki. Got to play with the hot hand to win games and the Twins need to start thinking that way. Levi Michael (.278/.386/.556) should be next in line.
  15. Yeah. Nunez is the problem here
  16. Sure. Piece of cake. http://gate.crashing.org/~fray/JEEP11.JPG
  17. Speaking of, have you checked who leads the Twins in OPS? Or whether the collective Twins' OPS is higher than Punto's career OPS? just sayin' Nunez is not the problem here.
  18. Got to remember that, for better or for worse, all minor league teams are developmentally focused. So you cannot pigeonhole players and you try to have them play in as many positions and appropriate and practical. For example, you will not play Mike Gonzales at SS or CF. Nothing uncommon. I would not be surprised if Walker takes some reps at 1B as well. Don't forget, that Harrison is still learning the OF pretty much, since it is his second year of not playing 3B...
  19. The Angels might be a good fit, based on who their backup catcher is I think that Gardenhire needs a low expectations & low accountability team like the Twins. From that list that would leave out the Angels (owner & fans), Marlins (owner), Phillies (owner & fans.) Maybe the Brewers are a good fit. Maybe. The've been keeping Roenicke around for ever and a few days. But the El Paso Diablos or the Round Rock Express, are probably a better fit. Or a third base coach position, since that was his role in the last post-season winning team he was a member.
  20. Would love to have Gardy (n Andy) in the division again. Um. He would not survive half a season in Philly. Kidding you not.
  21. Keep it up. And involve Detroit and Cleveland. KC's and WSux 2 best pitchers suspended because of this. Loving it
  22. Good stuff. One nit pick: Duensing never been on the DL in the minors as well (or missed time in College, after he returned from TJ surgery.) So he has never been on the DL before in his 10 year pro career.
  23. It is more complicated than that Really. When Calvin Griffith moved the franchise, it was put on paper that the whole history of the franchise moved. And we are talking about an AL founding franchise. And that was intact in the Griffith era. After Pohlad bought it, it became a bit more of a regional thing, even though Pohlad was talking about NC move before the contraction stuff. The recent iteration is totally regional, even to the ridiculousness of wearing the colors of a minor league team for a different franchise (Giants) instead of their own Senators' for some weird closed minded regionalistic reason that is so mid 20th century and pigeonholes them. But so do the redneck concerts that kill the Target Field grass. No. The Nationals have no claim in the Senators' history whatsoever.
  24. Not quite. Goslin finished his career elsewhere and his total WAR with the franchise was less than Kirby's
  25. His deal, but Mauer with a beard has a doppelgänger. This guy: http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Nick+Blackburn+Toronto+Blue+Jays+v+Minnesota+I_AlCO2DeONl.jpg Call it PTSD or what, but, no thanks.
