  1. That would leave them a little under 20 mil to spend after accounting for the players already under contract by my estimation. There are still a few other holes to fill. I just don't see them winning a bidding war, and paying the posting fee. It would be great if they did though.
  2. This isn't the US government, it's a privately owned business that can't just go out and print more money. As any business, they will have to "live within their means". That doesn't mean they won't still be a good team. The division is weak, and barring someone going crazy in the FA period, they should be primed for another playoff appearance. Once there, anything can happen. Also, they seem to have some pretty good players in the minors that will need a roster spot soon so signing a long term contract doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
  3. Fun to think about, but I can't see it happening. According to the Athletic the Twins want to trim at least 10% from payroll due to TV deal. They just don't have the room to get in a bidding war.
  4. Giolito only if they can stay under 15mil would be a gamble worth taking. So in other words no.
  5. With the TV deal still unknown, and the Twins cutting payroll, IMO they need to put the money into a mid level starter and at least 1 or 2 set up type relievers. If its still looking like Buck is a no go in the field, they also need a glove 1st type CF. Although IMO they should give Martin a chance in CF, nobody can say if he will cut it out there. Beside that, Martin doesn't really fit the mold of the FO wanting more power. I personally think a high on base guy with speed would really compliment the lineup, but we've seen over the past few years that's not the way this FO thinks.
  6. I don't see any of these getting signed by the Twins. With the cut in payroll coming (according to the Athletic), I can only see them signing a backup CF and a 4-5 type starter. I would put Martin in CF to backup Buxton, unless they don't think Buck can play the field anymore .
  7. IMO they won't go after any FA relievers unless there is someone they can pick up at the end of the off season. That way they can get more of a bargain, probably a 1 year make good deal. I would like to see them sign a starter like Maeda and convert Varland to full time pen. They can always stretch him out if they need a starter, and the guy was great in relief at the end of last year!
  8. Looking at those numbers doesn't give me much confidence.
  9. I expect them to make an offer to Mahle similar to Pinieda and Paddock. I think they probably will offer Maeda a deal too. Of course it depends on what Gray decides. Barring Gray and Maeda deals they would probably go to trading for someone, maybe with an expiring contract. They like a few guys coming up through the system, so I don't see them spending big. Of course, at this point its all just speculation.
  10. I don't see them spending that much money at this time, and I can't blame them, with the talent they seem to have coming up through the system.
  11. I would give Gray an offer of around 3yrs, 75 mil and he might take it, though I think he would rather move on. I would also give Maeda an offer in the 10-12 range. I'm not so sure I'd really consider any of the others due to the fact they have enough depth in the minors. Keep the cost down and see what the kids can do.
  12. Re-sign Gray on a 3 year 70 mil, move Varland to RP C: Christian Vazquez ($10.00M) 1B: Alex Kirilloff ($1.70M) 2B: Jorge Polanco ($10.50M) 3B: Royce Lewis ($0.77M) SS: Carlos Correa ($33.33M) LF: Matt Wallner ($0.77M) CF: Byron Buxton ($15.00M) RF: Max Kepler ($10.00M) DH: Edouard Julien ($0.77M) 4th OF: Willi Castro ($3.20M) Utility: Trevor Larnach ($0.77M) Utility: Kyle Farmer ($6.60M) Backup C: Ryan Jeffers ($2.30M) SP1: Pablo Lopez ($8.25M) SP2: Joe Ryan ($0.77M) SP3: Bailey Ober ($0.77M) SP4: Chris Paddack ($2.53M) SP5: Sonny Gray ($21.00) ($23.5M) RP: Jhoan Duran ($0.77M) RP: Brock Stewart ($0.77M) RP: Griffin Jax ($0.77M) RP: Jorge Alcala ($1.00M) RP: Caleb Thielbar ($3.00M) RP: Cole Sands ($0.77M) RP: Jovani Moran ($0.77M) RP: Varland ($0.77M) Payroll is 6.57% under budget
  13. I can live with the K's if he can pound out 30 or more HR's and drive in 60 or more runs. I would hope he can continue to adjust and bring his rate down some though. The frustrating thing for me this past season was seeing so many pitches right down broadway taken for a 3rd strike. I know hitters can get fooled but it sure seemed like it happened a lot. Give Wallner a full season to see how he adjusts. Then see if he can hit lefties as well.
  14. Whoever they chose will have a hard time filling the huge shoes of Dick. IMO he was one of the best at his craft. I for one will miss him!
  15. I'm thinking he will get at least a 3 year offer, which may be hard to match. However, the Twins could maybe offer a 2 year with higher annual value that maybe they would feel comfortable with. It all comes down to where does Gray want to play out the rest of his career.
  16. Cheap options that really haven't proved themselves at the major league level. Lee has played so few games in the minors that nobody knows how he'll do over a full major league season. Martin was so bad year before last that people on this site were calling the trade with Toronto a flop. Julian had a great 1st part of a season but many rookies look like future greats, only to flop after that 1st year. IMO Lee needs at least another year to prove himself in AAA. Martin needs to get more experience in the OF where I believe his future is.
  17. I disagree for now anyway. While Julian looks like the real deal, I've followed the Twins since they moved here in '61, and I've seen countless rookies come up with a major 1st year only to flop after. Let Julian prove he is a reasonable replacement at 2nd, then look at trades. As far as Farmer and Castro, neither one is anywhere near as good as Polo.
  18. Pretty risky IMO to count on minor league players to come up and play up to the caliber that Polo does. Though I do think he will be a trade candidate, they better get top value in return.
  19. Another pitcher from Rice with arm trouble. Sure seems like a common issue with Rice. Obviously, coming off surgery will mean a pretty tight innings limit for him. This may be a season to put him in a relief role, at least for a trial run. Maybe next season try to stretch him out more if they have a need in the rotation. If they decide to leave him in the pen he probably could slot in as a pretty good set-up guy.
  20. I wouldn't trade him this winter. see how things go by moving him up a level or 2 then make a decision.
  21. Actually, that TV revenue is cut in half so its closer to 25 mil that is lost. They will get some of that back in a new TV contract. They can get some back in increased advertising, and staying competitive should increase attendance to help recoup more of that,
  22. His knowledge of the Twins history was great. Really enjoyed Dick for the last 40.
  23. I agree. It comes down to winning. Winning puts butts in the seats, which increases concession sales, advertising etc... To let the team slide now would probably set the attendance back by a few hundred thousand, where staying good and competitive will increase it all.
