Wallner's arm is too good for first base. Larnach may be a better option.

With Miranda, Correa and Lewis out we are down to having to DH Vasquez against left-handers.

I would have sent Julien down yesterday instead of Castillo. Castillo is a better defender and currently a better hitter. Plus, he is right-handed. Just do not understand FO love for Julien.

Phillies v Twins; 7/24 @ 12:10pm CT
William K Johnson replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
Talked to a buddy who is a big Philly fan prior to the series and told him that they would be our bullpen. Boy that was an easy call. -
The decision came down to either Wade or Cave. Front office decided Cave was a better option. Oops!!

Felt bad for Correa, he had outs on both sides of him. Wisely had the game of his life. He was like 4 for his last 40 coming in and I watched a Giants game earlier where he was just awful at second base. Agree with earlier comment, over 162 games you will have games where the opponent plays out of their *** and your guys stink it up. However, I still question Vasquez in the DH role. Worst hitter on the team and could have given Carmargo some at bats. Margot should be gone once Martin is healthy.

The "Core Four" (Lewis, Buxton, Correa and Lee) seem ready for an extended run if not beset by the injury bug. Kepler is in one of his pop-up runs, Larnach's strike out issue seems to be re-emerging, Miranda may never take a walk again and Castro is in a little bit of a slump. However, if these guys and Wallner can contribute something daily, the offense will be fine. Time to move on from Margot, Santana and Farmer. Martin looks like a solid utility player. Also need to figure out if Kiriloff is the answer at first or what other options are available there. No one expected Cleveland to be this good. David Fry (All-Star), Freeman, Martinez, and even Bo Naylor have been surprising. You have to tip your hat to their staff, replacing Shane Bieber without a hiccup is a testimony to their front office. Bullpen is a good as there is, and their Core four (Kwan, Naylor, Ramirez, Gimenez) are consistently good. On the pitching front, Joe Ryan may be the greatest trade in Twins history. If he continues progressing the way he is, he could possibly be an ace of this rotation, if not already. Ober continues to amaze with his consistency, Lopez surely will figure out the problem with his breaking balls, but after that, everything is up in the air. SMR has been pleasant surprise, but I have a feeling he will eventually hit a wall. Paddack is still very questionable. Bullpen seems to be getting better but still could use an additional arm or two. Stewart and Topia's return should help but more is needed. A left hander in particular would help, as neither Okert or Funderburk appear to be the answer and how much is left in Thielbar? All in all, it appears that we should have an interesting second half.

I would rather see our guys get five days off anyway. A playoff spot is more important than an exhibition game.

Anyone know why Miranda hit for Farmer? Did it have to do with the ball off his wrist in an earlier at bat? Or was it the two awful looking strike outs?

Most managers will walk the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the 10th if as a visiting team you do not score in the top of the 10th. That run means nothing and sets up a double play opportunity. The '27 Yankees could not win with Vasquez in the lineup.

Rays (Bradley) vs Twins (Ryan): 6/19/24, 6:40pm
William K Johnson replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
This game just does not appear to be going our way. Castro's stumble at first cost us an early run, the Roverdt hit to left that started the eighth, Diaz two hits that neither traveled 50 feet, a bad call on Martin and the decision to use Sands in a close game. Not looking like our night. -
Time to extend Kepler. Royce Lewis not batting in that game is criminal.

As a former umpire, I noted that as well. However, on replay I also noted that the umpire extended his right arm indicating a delayed dead ball call if Miranda would not have been able to get to the ball. However, he did, and the umpire dropped his right arm immediately. Good mechanics, but still does not take away from how bad this crew has been in this series.

Random thoughts - - Was surprised that Phil Cuzzi wasn't assigned to this series, but tonight's home plate umpire did his best to fill in. There is just a different strike zone for the Yankees. The ball four call on Judge was atrocious. An earlier poster indicated that it did not make a difference in the outcome, I disagree. It ran up Ober's pitch count and frustrated him as well. - Royce Lewis is a real baseball player - With the exception of the catcher position, I liked our lineup tonight. I know we only had two hits, but the defense was good, and that lineup will hit most right-hand pitchers. The problem is going to be when we switch back to that right hand hitting lineup with Margot, Santana, Farmer and Vasquez. Lewis will help with that, but those four bats in the lineup are not going to win many games. - Royce Lewis is a real baseball player - The Jorge Polanco trade will go down as one of the worst Twins trades ever. Keep in mind that includes the Bill Smith era. For the second time in three years the Twins trade a solid major league player to clear room for a prospect (see Gio Urshela). Mistakes like that are not easily overcome. - Royce Lewis is a real baseball player - I realize it is early June but quite honestly, we are playing for a wild card position. Cleveland will run away with this division. Better front-line pitching, unexpected contributions from Freeman, Fry and Brennan, and Classe can pitch every day. Jose Ramirez is the best player in the division and Kwan seems to be over his injury. - Did I mention that Royce Lewis is a real baseball player?

Twins have plenty to offer outside of Jenkins and Lee. With a surplus of left hand hitters, even Larnach and/or Kiriloff should be on the table. Julien and Miranda are both available as well.

Replacing Larnac, Kepler, Kiriloff and Julien with Margot, Farmer, Vasquez, and Santana does not seem to work out very well. Vazquez may be our worst free agent signing ever, and I realize that says a lot.

Miranda's defense at third would be comical if he played for someone else. How much longer until Lewis is back?

All front offices make mistakes. Tampa Bay has made plenty. Cleveland better have a pitcher pipeline, the way they burn through pitchers. There will never be total agreement on everything they do, but as long as they have a solid plan to move forward you live with the errors and move on, kind of like Julein playing second.

Love the winning streak, but a couple of observations: - Why can't we try Castro at leadoff? - Cole Sands in the eighth inning? - Is anyone else beginning to get a little concerned about Kiriloff? - I thought Margot was Buxton insurance. Anyway, this sure is fun.
