  1. I really hope that someone makes a reel of this silly dive and all the others to come. It will be good comedy down the road. Not so funny when you are living it, but when you look back, it will be easier to laugh at it.
  2. A thread titled TRENDING, and no talk of trending? I don't think so! Unfortunately, seeing all those pitches has lead to 23 K's in two games. Can you envision 1863 for the year? Both Gibson and Jepsen are trending low velocity. And Hughes? Can he possibly have a good April for a change?
  3. Molitor is trying to make sure red hot D-san cools off?
  4. It only took me one game to remember how much I hate home plate umpires, and humans calling balls and strikes as poorly as they always do. And game two didn't help.
  5. I bet that was Dozier's decision. I can't get started until I know that.... ........ and hey! This isn't game one discussion anymore! This thread is getting hi-jacked by game two!
  6. Yeah..... for sure. How unreasonable for anyone to expect the number one prospect in baseball for so long to actually be one of the ones that really is as good as all the pundits say he is, and actually be one of the special ones that waltzes right in and performs like everyone has said he would forever and a day. Like Jose Fernandez did, for instance. Or Liriano did. Or Sano did. It is just crazy to think that Buxton could be the one, and then he would actually be the one. So silly.
  7. Game one (over) reactions. Yup. One game. I think we are spot on topic. Relaxed (over) discussion. That is what we do here.
  8. Casey Fien should not be on the team. Period. I have no problem with Suzuki batting today. He finished spring training on a roll, and there is a lot to be said for the hot bat. (Plus, his RBI tied the game!. I have no excuse for a catcher, any catcher/pitcher combo letting Trumbo steal a base, though). Granted, Santana's bat is hotter. No reason to let it cool off. Escobar's second double was tagged, but it was a catchable ball that Trumbo misplayed (imagine that). Dozier needs to make that play on the relay from Sano. It one hopped, but Dozier bobbling the ball and then making a poor throw cost a run. He needs to throw that runner out. I can't expect Sano to make the catch on the Jones drive, but a right fielder certainly could have turned that into a fine catch and an out . The batters made Tillman look like a strikeout king, swinging through meat that was right down the middle and "mistakes" that should be driven out of the park (or at least a base hit... like when Jepsen decided to throw the meat that cost the game). I can't believe Rosario caught that wind blown fly at the fence looking up into the rain. As long as the Twins keep trading center fielders that are finally ready or there, there will be the next hope prematurely occupying the spot, making catches but not hitting. I love E-San's red glove.
  9. Another college player #1 pick now in the bullpen, and still in AA. Good luck Alex Wimmers. And yet another #1 and college player pick, Levi Michael, still in AA ball might need some luck, too. Looking forward with high hopes to see what Daniel Palka and Engelb Vielma do.
  10. Seth Stohs Top 30: Gordon (4), Gonsalves (6), Stewart (11), Thorpe (13), Rosario (19), Jorge (22), Navarreto (29) It must be a mistake.... I can't believe that Seth did not rank Jay at all. I hope our first round and #6 overall pick makes some quick progress. The Twins can find a way to use their #1 pick on a player that takes extra time in so many different ways..... even if they are a college pitcher. Good luck to you Tyler Jay. And Kohl Stewart. (Maybe Jeb Bush gave him a little turtle for his pocket).
  11. I second that. I predict and team record, and think this team may also push the MLB record. They were doing quite well practicing striking out in spring training.
  12. D-san is ready to rock. Talk about turning the Spring Training around. Heating up at the right time. Lovin' it.
  13. Somebody tell the pitchers that the season is starting now, please!
  14. If that was his worst year, thanks for confirming that, whatever year it was. It was the year his fastball totally flattened out, and he was even demoted to Rochester for a spell. It was only a descriptive phrase, not a debate on Crain. I think it was actually 2009, though, when he was healthy (and the look on his profusely sweating face for outing after outing was similar to Perkins in September last year), and again, it was just a descriptive phrase, and not an attempt to hijack the thread to start talking about Crain, nor make this a new discussion about advanced stats and whether I can like Tonkin or not and his straight but speedy fastball because I like the inherited runners scored stat.
  15. "Crain in his worst year" means his career to you? (I believe I never brought up the reliever's won-lost record, either, but referred to the pitcher that was pulled that took a loss. I did enjoy the aside summary take on Crain's Twins' career, though.) I agree, the human memory is selective and often irrational. Thanks for your permission.
  16. I love to think about power alley with Sano, Park, and Arcia. I try not to think about what kind of strikeout record would be set.
  17. I respect the advanced stat trend and trying to make an argument about them, and I do not discount them. And I applaud the arguments. I still like inherited runners scored, and think it is very telling about the pitcher, and it tells me a lot. So do other things that have been brought up to convince one to disregard it. This originally started with me saying that I like it (and I still do and will) and the curiosity that it is hard to find it, if at all, on many sources pitchers' stats. As far as small samples, one can only take what they can get - ever. I see that according to spycake, Tonkin was at 36% last year, and 6% over the team and league average. Since I am never really happy with a league average player anyway (sure, it could be worse, but still not "happy"), that only solidifies my lack of love (in fact I cringe) for seeing Tonkin come into the game, and watching that "Crain in his worst year" straight fastball get crushed and empty the bases, and lose the game, and give a loss to the pitcher he was supposed to provide relief for, and that probably could have done better than Tonkin if he had been given the chance. I wish inherited runners scored was easier to find, and found a home in all pitchers' stat lines from all sources. I don't ever see a stat as "broken". It is only ever a record of what happened.
  18. Inherited runners scored means a lot to me! It is not relief if the pitcher comes in and lets the runners on base score. If he needs a strikeout and a double play to get out of a bases loaded with no outs jam, that is relief. If the pitcher comes in and there is two outs and the bases loaded, and he gives up a bases clearing double and then gets a strikeout, his line looks pretty good while he lays three runs on the teammate he was supposed to offer relief to. I get FIP/xFIP, but inherited runners scored tells me a lot more about a pitchers moxy and guts and whether he can do his job as a relief pitcher, and that job is to shut the other team down, no matter what it takes. That is why they call it relief.
  19. To me, the most important stat that is compiled about a reliever is inherited runners scored. It always amazes me that even though it is in every box score, it is hard to find it in a lot of the sites' individual stats. Tonkin's good at letting inherited runners score. That fast ball is so straight, it doesn't matter what speed it is thrown at. We will see. He gets another chance.
  20. With Park in the mix with Sano and Dozier and the rest of the lineup..... this could be a team that certainly sets the new strikeout record for the team, and might be pushing the MLB record before they are done. (Buxton, Plouffe, Rosario that swings at everything, Arcia.....) I certainly hope not, but it sure looks like it on paper.
  21. Santana sure is heating up this last week. I hope he keeps it up.
  22. "The downside could be losing a few more games." A straight fastball gets rocked in the show. That few more games cost the Twins a wildcard slot last year. I am not a fan of either decision here, especially putting Tonkin in the MLB pen.
  23. There is that reference to a rebuild again. I could swear that those in charge have told us over and over again that there was no rebuild........
  24. Great spring of pitching? A 4.05 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 14 hits given up in 13.1 innings, and he got shelled a couple times by minor leaguers as low as A and AA ball........ I wouldn't classify that as "great". Maybe I reserve great for too high of a standard. Gibson has had a really good spring, and I wouldn't even call that great. I am hoping he does well, though, and spring training is to get ready. I like wins, and as long as he is in the rotation, I can't hope he hurts the team.
  25. ...... and a homer and 3 hits and 3 RBI today...... he is more than ready.
