Article: Perkins To DL, Rogers Called Up
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope May gets some shots at closing. Jepsen was fools gold last year and will tank if he is used there this year. JT Chargios to the rescue? -
I have never bought into the pitch that it matters where a player plays in the field and that it affects the performance at the plate. Batting is batting, and has nothing to do with fielding. Mental issues certainly come into play, and rhythm of the game is different if one is a DH and just hits... but whether one plays outfield or infield, or switches around the field..... I don't buy that it should or does have an effect on hitting.

Sano's problem at the plate is from scouting his inability to hit a fastball up in the zone, and that is all he is getting now, and he swings and misses. He is swinging right through meat at the belt right down the middle and not even out of the zone. Scouting Duffey and looking for his curve instead of being fooled by it........ it is rare for the league to not adjust quickly with all the video, advanced stats, and scouting, and both Duffey and Sano need to make their own adjustments now, too. They are not performing the same because of the very tendencies that made them successful last year, are their nemesis this year.

Article: Three-Bagger: Schwarber, Strikeouts And Kepler
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think Sano in the outfield is a danger to his own health - I think that Sano is a danger to the health of his teammates! Particularly Buxton, Dozier, and Mauer. Buxton especially, as he would probably be going at a terrific speed if they collided. I was happy to see Sano stick up for himself on that horrible call by plate umpire John Hirschbeck. The pitch he was tossed over was way outside and called a strike 3. Sure, arguing is an automatic ejection, but that was a horrible call. Hirschbeck needed ejected. (Hirschbeck then called several balls strikes that May threw in the 10th). It was great that Sano did get booted, because Kepler had a great at bat and a great catch that Sano would never make in the 9th.- 67 replies

From the album: Umpire calls
Plate umpire John Hirschbeck continues to miss the high part of the zone and calls Trevor May's pitch #2 a ball in the critical Lorenzo Cain at bat. The correct call would have made pitch #4 a strikeout. -
From the album: Umpire calls
With two outs in the critical 10th inning, John Hirschbeck called a perfect strike by Trevor May (pitch #5) a ball that gave another gift walk to the Royals, this time to Moustakas. -
From the album: Umpire calls
While John Hirschbeck called a pitch that was way outside a strike against Sano in the 7th (for which Sano rightfully objected) and then booted him from the game, he called a pitch on the outside edge a ball that was a strike against Trevor May in the 10th, and gave an unearned walk to Christian Colon of the Royals. -

Very nice to see. Is Jay on a pitch limit? Going only 80 when you are cruising seems a little light. I know, I know..... he is being converted, but still. 80 pitches seems a little light, nonetheless.

Article: Trending (4/7): Too Early To Trend
h2oface replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A thread titled TRENDING, and no talk of trending? I don't think so! Unfortunately, seeing all those pitches has lead to 23 K's in two games. Can you envision 1863 for the year? Both Gibson and Jepsen are trending low velocity. And Hughes? Can he possibly have a good April for a change? -

Another college player #1 pick now in the bullpen, and still in AA. Good luck Alex Wimmers. And yet another #1 and college player pick, Levi Michael, still in AA ball might need some luck, too. Looking forward with high hopes to see what Daniel Palka and Engelb Vielma do. -

Seth Stohs Top 30: Gordon (4), Gonsalves (6), Stewart (11), Thorpe (13), Rosario (19), Jorge (22), Navarreto (29) It must be a mistake.... I can't believe that Seth did not rank Jay at all. I hope our first round and #6 overall pick makes some quick progress. The Twins can find a way to use their #1 pick on a player that takes extra time in so many different ways..... even if they are a college pitcher. Good luck to you Tyler Jay. And Kohl Stewart. Article: Making Sense Of The Final Roster Decisions
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If that was his worst year, thanks for confirming that, whatever year it was. It was the year his fastball totally flattened out, and he was even demoted to Rochester for a spell. It was only a descriptive phrase, not a debate on Crain. I think it was actually 2009, though, when he was healthy (and the look on his profusely sweating face for outing after outing was similar to Perkins in September last year), and again, it was just a descriptive phrase, and not an attempt to hijack the thread to start talking about Crain, nor make this a new discussion about advanced stats and whether I can like Tonkin or not and his straight but speedy fastball because I like the inherited runners scored stat.- 72 replies

"Crain in his worst year" means his career to you? (I believe I never brought up the reliever's won-lost record, either, but referred to the pitcher that was pulled that took a loss. I did enjoy the aside summary take on Crain's Twins' career, though.) I agree, the human memory is selective and often irrational. Thanks for your permission.- 72 replies

Article: Making Sense Of The Final Roster Decisions
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I respect the advanced stat trend and trying to make an argument about them, and I do not discount them. And I applaud the arguments. I still like inherited runners scored, and think it is very telling about the pitcher, and it tells me a lot. So do other things that have been brought up to convince one to disregard it. This originally started with me saying that I like it (and I still do and will) and the curiosity that it is hard to find it, if at all, on many sources pitchers' stats. As far as small samples, one can only take what they can get - ever. I see that according to spycake, Tonkin was at 36% last year, and 6% over the team and league average. Since I am never really happy with a league average player anyway (sure, it could be worse, but still not "happy"), that only solidifies my lack of love (in fact I cringe) for seeing Tonkin come into the game, and watching that "Crain in his worst year" straight fastball get crushed and empty the bases, and lose the game, and give a loss to the pitcher he was supposed to provide relief for, and that probably could have done better than Tonkin if he had been given the chance. I wish inherited runners scored was easier to find, and found a home in all pitchers' stat lines from all sources. I don't ever see a stat as "broken". It is only ever a record of what happened.- 72 replies

Article: Making Sense Of The Final Roster Decisions
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Inherited runners scored means a lot to me! It is not relief if the pitcher comes in and lets the runners on base score. If he needs a strikeout and a double play to get out of a bases loaded with no outs jam, that is relief. If the pitcher comes in and there is two outs and the bases loaded, and he gives up a bases clearing double and then gets a strikeout, his line looks pretty good while he lays three runs on the teammate he was supposed to offer relief to. I get FIP/xFIP, but inherited runners scored tells me a lot more about a pitchers moxy and guts and whether he can do his job as a relief pitcher, and that job is to shut the other team down, no matter what it takes. That is why they call it relief.- 72 replies

To me, the most important stat that is compiled about a reliever is inherited runners scored. It always amazes me that even though it is in every box score, it is hard to find it in a lot of the sites' individual stats. Tonkin's good at letting inherited runners score. That fast ball is so straight, it doesn't matter what speed it is thrown at. We will see. He gets another chance.- 72 replies

Article: Player Predictions: DH Byung Ho Park
h2oface replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With Park in the mix with Sano and Dozier and the rest of the lineup..... this could be a team that certainly sets the new strikeout record for the team, and might be pushing the MLB record before they are done. (Buxton, Plouffe, Rosario that swings at everything, Arcia.....) I certainly hope not, but it sure looks like it on paper. -

"The downside could be losing a few more games." A straight fastball gets rocked in the show. That few more games cost the Twins a wildcard slot last year. I am not a fan of either decision here, especially putting Tonkin in the MLB pen.- 72 replies
