  1. Maybe I need new glasses but I didn't see anything last year that told me Parmalee was a good outfielder. He may be better than a bunch of other guys we have but none of them are close to playing good D! Maybe being less bad = good? You have to put up some really decent hitting numbers when you play D like he does and he has yet to come close to that, imo.
  2. Reynolds might improve team speed and his K rate would fit in! From the piranhas to the whales.
  3. With Pelfry signing and non arb players we are about back to last years payroll, low 80's. At this point blowing the horn and throwing confetti for Terry may be a little hasty. Nothing has been done with the offense, other than lose Morneau. Same old slow plodding outfield and a lineup of strickout machines. Until he takes the next step by adding some players on the offense side and actually increasing the payroll, what he has done really shows us he hasn't changed all that much at all.
  4. Well Terry is related to Paul Ryan!
  5. The saying goes you can never have enough pitching. Of course, it makes more sense if you put "good" in front of pitching. At this point I think the hope is with enough guys thrown against the wall some of them will stick and at the same time not stink like last year. I agree with Mike on the offense, where is that coming from?
  6. I think Paul Maholm is still out there. He is left handed, which would be a plus, and is likely to get the same kind of contract that the Twins appear to have offered Pelfrey. Pelfrey: 55-67, 4.48 era, whip 1.472 and an ERA+ of 90. Maholm: 76-95, 4.28 era, whip 1.397 and an ERA+ of 96. yes i know these stats aren't perfect! IMO, Maholm would make more sense if he is still available. Having at least one LH starter would seem like a good idea.
  7. I don't get the Ryan love for Pelfrey. At his best he is a mediocre pitcher, at his best. Shouldn't we be spending the money on guys that may end up being good?
  8. My guess Garza gets 4 yrs $60m with a 5th yr option and a $5m buyout. I think he'd be worth that $65 min and $75 max. His numbers don't equal more than that do they?
  9. We know Smith wasn't a player evel guy or scout so it would be nice to know who was involved in the trades and signings. The minors actually got better under Smith mainly because he wasn't afraid of spending money while Ryan drafted a lot with signability a factor. There is no doubt Sano/Kepler would not be with the Twins if Ryan had been in charge. I really think this was a team effort and the entire team is still in place and calling the shots. Shifted a few offices around but the same poeple in them.
  10. The team has added Nolasco and Hughes (not sure what we'll get with him) and lost Morneau and some how this team will win around 20 more games this year? Mike what are you smoking?
  11. The key is platoon. You put Dirks and Davis together in a platoon and you have a decent outfielder. However, it makes no sense to sign platoon type players when the manager doesn't do that.
  12. I see the problem not with the 40 man but with a lot of guys that don't belong there. We've lost a lot of games the last 3 years clearly a lot of these guys just aren't good enough to worry about.
  13. After watching this teams starting pitching the last few years I don't understand why we'd be worried about losing any of these guys out of options. There is nothing that says Hughes is a sure upgrade he's stunk 2 out of the last 3 years. Corriea had an ok year but is he likely to repeat that? The rest of these guys, besides Nolasco, haven't shown, over any length of time, that they belong at the major league level. Sign a bunch of guys you throw enough against the wall something might stick.
  14. He'd be good in a staring contest!
  15. Not my money and the owner who writes the checks decided it was a deal he could live with. The guy plays every day and no history of injury, obscene amout of money but he might come close to earning it. Might work out better than the next 5 years we have with Joe and all his injury issues.
  16. Franklin would be decent pick up he sure looked good against the Twins. Played a lot of SS in the minors and could be a good middle infield backup. Of course looking good against the Twins doesn't mean that much.
  17. Any guess as to what it would cost in prospects?
  18. That means he's a DH he certainly should never play in the outfield.
  19. The problem I see is that the guys that might have come back years are all slow and poor in the field. Arcia and Pinto may become good players but now are slow footed and not good in the field so they have to hit well to be viable. Willingham, Doumit, Plouffe, Parmalee and Colabelo are all slow and sub par in the field. Picking up Nate McLouth and Franklin Guetierrez to platoon in one outfiled spot would give us some speed and likely wouldn't cost a lot, of course, Guetierrez can't seem to stay healthy. Even McLouth and Mastro platoon would help the D. An outfield with Willy, Doumit, Parmalee and or Arcia playing 2 of the spots can't make any pitcher happy.
  20. Whitey Ford was 5-10, 175 and averaged 230 innings over 13 years. Guess he didn't know he was small.
  21. Lucky you don't work for the Yankees or you'd be walking out the door with your stuff in a cardboard box.
  22. [h=1]"Twins Finally Assembling Starting Pitching Depth" [/h]But is it good depth? Disclaimer: if you really don't like ERA+ skip the rest! Career era+ for a potential starting rotation: Hughes-95 Nolasco-94 Pelfrey-90 Diamond-92 Deduno-101 Corriea-89 Looks like a rotation of a lot of mediocre at best starters. It might be better than last year but that bar isn't set very high is it?
  23. Amazing how people can see into the future. Time will tell if it's a bad contract, the Yankees have the money and are trying to make their team better. The Twins have lots of money still about 30-35 mill below the stated 52% Jim Pohlad said they'd spend to put a competitive team on the field. I'd much rather have my team try and maybe end up with a bad contract instead of sitting back afraid of making a mistake while keeping the money in the owners pocket.
