  1. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.Albert Einstein
  2. Comes down to this for me, you have $115m future investment in Mauer. Mauer catching increases the chances that a good amount of that money could be lost with little or zero return. If that was my investment I'd do everything I could to put him in the position that he'd play the most games and remain healthy. That would be no more catching! On top of that we don't have a 1b ready to take over for Morneau and there are several decent free agent catchers that could share the job with Pinto or someone else. The risk vs the minimal reward means imo, that the only common sense thing to do with that much money invested in the teams best asset is move him.
  3. "Sadly, no one seems to be developing a catcher's mask that uses modern materials and design to absorb more of the force of a foul tip. Unless that happens, Mauer's entire career could be ended by a single foul tip." As I understand it most catchers use a "modern" mask. The problem is they switched to titanium which is lighter but also much harder than the old style. The older type mask had give, softer metal, which helped absorb the energy. The new harder metal does not. They could use a goalie type mask which provides a lot more protection but is very hot in warm weather. It seems most catchers have opted for comfort over safety.
  4. I'm afraid that even borderline mediocre pitching is going to be really expensive this year, at least in relation to how much Ryan is willing to spend. Hughes and Jackson compare fairly well stat wise, would Terry do a 4/52m? I can't see it.
  5. His career numbers are a lot better than Correia and he pitched in the AL East. That's the bright side, however, he has been a mediocre pitcher over his career at best. I think I'd try a make good contract with both him and Josh Johnson 7-8 mill base with a bunch of incentives they could reach if they pitch well. Neither has shown a longer term contract would be wise and Ryan is rather conservative when spending money. I just can't see Ryan doing a 10+m multiy year deal, it just isn't in his nature.
  6. "... we’ve fallen a tad short here as far as productivity." Really?
  7. Cueller was born and raised in Texas and went to the U of Texas about as american as you can get. This is just my opinion but speaking spanish doesn't mean you can relate to players from Latin America and help mentor them. Of course it doesn't mean he doesn't help either. However, I think that an ex latin player that could relate to coming to a new country, new language and having suceeded at making that transition would be helpful. A question I'll ask is do the Twins have anyone in the dugout during the games that speaks fluent spanish?
  8. I have nothing against Molitor and he was a great player, however this team really needs a latin presence on it's coaching staff, imo. If they need room Ullger should have been gone years ago.
  9. Until Ryan shows he will spend more than 8 mill a year on a pitcher it's kind of pointless to consider this kind of guy. It would seem the Phil Hughes/Josh Johnson kind of guy would be more in Ryans range on short term, make good, type contracts in the 6-8 mill range.
  10. "It seems those who are looking for the big free agent signing should beware of what happens when too much salary is wrapped up in one or two players." I don't get the point of this. Help please!
  11. I read that his brother lives in the cities and is a season ticket holder. Must be true if somebody wrote it.
  12. Question, has Terry Ryan ever shown that he will (by actually doing it) spend a large amount of money on an International Free agent, Cuban or Asian player?
  13. Of the other 29 teams how many of them have fans talking about how good it would be to bring in Pelfry as a free agent this winter? My guess zero. Time to move on for him!
  14. Last winter during the winter meetings the MLB Baseball Network crew was talking about this and the two ex-players both said it's the money don't be fooled. A player may say a lot of things but in the end the player will nearly always take the most money.
  15. Brian McCann! When he blocked the plate on the goofy Go Go's homerun rant I thought I want that guy on my team. He'll cost a little more than we've been paying Morneau but he'd be a middle of the order bat, a leader and a guy that would keep Mauer at 1B. Win, win, imo.
  16. Sorry I wasn't trying to inflame anyone just expressing my opinion. I'll do my best to stay away for a while.
  17. "Terry Ryan's Innovative formula..." Has given us one playoff series win in what 14-15 years. Doesn't seem good enough to me but I guess a lot of people are happy with that record. Where you set the bar to be a happy fan will likely tell weather you think TR is innovative or not. I'd still like to hear Terry or Jim Pohlad say "we are going to do everything we can to build a world series championship team" and then go out a try. Failure at trying to be the best I can live with, failure at trying to be mediocre, not so much.
  18. Do you really think McCutchen could beat out Presley?
  19. Doesn't seem like the same game we've been watching.
  20. They said that they had Frankie make some changes and it seems they saw something Rick missed.
  21. Think about life without Brian.

  23. These guys just talk in circles. Pohlad says Terry can spend on free agents he has the money, Terry says we can't fix this with free agents. Pohlad has just made a promise that he knows Terry will never cash in.
  24. In all this talk did anyone ever hear Terry, Gardy or any other Twin employee say we want to win a World Series? The commitment to be the best is not there. All they ever say is we want to compete. We want to play meaningful games in September. By that standard this was a good year.
