  1. 80 loss season so there are about 9 excuses, most of them could just as well be involving central division foes. It was a season that looks like the would have continued their new playoff string had they made it there
  2. Yup. What are you going to sign for 7.5 mil. Who signed last year for less money and pitched no near league average? That is a needle in a haystack and you trust those guys to find one. I think the last GM who traded a in the offseason a quality starting pitcher who was had team control was fired. They has even got an all star in return
  3. Of the starting pitcher who pitched at least 50 inning, Paddack was 138th best by ERA, 115th by WAR, and 96th by FIP. No, you might find a more durable pitcher cheaper or off the wavier wire but with the state of starting pitching you are unlikely to find a better one
  4. The numbers of how the fan numbers drop in San Diego is easily obtainable that is how you can say there is a drop off when they do not win
  5. One time losses, not yearly losses on a baseball team. It would also not be as great of loss as what it would take to make the Twins a top 10 payroll team
  6. What is so weird about pointing out that the A’s have cycled up and down over time just as the Padres and Phillies have? The Phillies and the Padres are on up cycles right now, the A’s are on a down cycle. History will also show that when the Padres are on a down cycle they are not beloved like the Cubs once were
  7. If other teams had the book on Julien by the end of the year then despite what baseball trade values said, he did not have value Paddack was paid 2.5 million last the cheaper replacements of Varland and Mathehews did not pitch better, Festa was about the same. The 2.5 million replacement would come from where?
  8. I di not say that they were poorly run franchises. That is very poor reading on your part. The person I responded to said Oakland has won squat during the Billy Bean era. The Phillies and San Diego over the same period have not won as many division championships. The Phillies had a 10 year streak of mediocrity
  9. There is a math problem and a perception problem here. The perception problem is that it would only be short term the owner would be contributing their money. The Miami Marlins come to mind as a team that had very good success with short term spending but zero success in sustainability of that success or even getting fans interested. Thinking that a short term invest is going to work has not been shown. Being in the top 10 payrolls would have meant an increase in payroll of 90 million. No billionaire has ever sustained those kinds of losses. The increased fans less the revenue share portion, less the costs associated with having more fans might not even pay for the increased payroll taxes. Thank the OP for the grim reality that it is useless for the billionaire to spend only a little more on payroll
  10. The Phillies and Padres have spent freely and won squat
  11. Onviously I didn’t read the article as I do not have a yellow background. The Twins were in the middle of the pack in terms of runs, hits, OPS,, WRC, WOBA<and GIP. When you look at the the stats for the players, 30% of the PA were by players with an OPS+ less than 90. Two of the main culprits will leave via free agency Improved health of key players will also bring the numbers up. A cure for the sophomore slumps would also be of help. Maybe the will add a sports psychologist to the training staff
  12. In no universe can you predict the pulley tendon injury and the resulting changes in what he could do
  13. Speed without OBP is useless. That is why these guys are available on a budget contract. Igleseas might could do it. It might have also been an outlier year
  14. Yup, Falvey did everything, that is why there are 6 vice presidents and over 50 other assistants, directors, and other titles as well listed under him in baseball operations
  15. It will be interesting to see if there are any changes in direction on trades with Levine gone. With the guaranteed contracts totaling almost 100 million, and with 13-14 arb eligible players something is going to have to give. Maybe the new GM will not have a fondness for oft injured pitchers
  16. You sure don’t act like you know you don’t have facts. LA Times also had said the offers were in the 2.5 billion range. Then again, that is the media that you can be so dismissive of because you know so much more about sales of teams than the local paper would
  17. Scott was traded for a slew of prospect is true. Years ago Craig Kimbrel was traded twice for prospects. I really can’t say there were gems there. The FO did well with trading for Alcala and Duran., they might do well with Henriquez some day.. Just don’t expect a whole lot out of a trade
  18. So are you supposed to throw a tantrum, fling bats and helmets and the like when you have a negative outcome in baseball. Just a “dammit” under your breath and moving on is a negative.
  19. As the price was far mor than what the Mets sold for, no difference with the Rendon contract. You have an opinion. Past this point try a fact
  20. The numbers say the payroll went down. What happened with the club is they got old and had already lost the core. Sure it happened at the time of the sale but the club was so bad they had to start over.
  21. The contract had zero effect on the bid as you can see by the numbersper an SI article On the bid. Moreno being Moreno took the team off the market But ESPN has now reported some actual offers that Moreno rejected last year for the team and let's just say... he was not kidding when he was talking about how big the sums were.
  22. What talent did the Royals sell? The rest of your statement is backwards of what the people here have said about a profitable team
