  1. Thanks for the article. I invite you to seize the opportunity to let it go after 30 years. Perhaps Jim Pohlad will read this and get us an ace pitcher and a really good pitching coach.
  2. I just have to say I absolutely love this article. Don't necessarily know that I agree with Sano & Buxton starting right away in 2015, but I just love the rest of it. You said nothing of Rick Anderson, but I have to believe his departure would be part of it. It will be interesting to see what the off season brings.
  3. We have Hughes, Nolasco, May and Gibson in the starting rotation next year. Pelfrey, Milone, Meyer and the one or two #5 pitchers Terry Ryan signs in the off-season will be competing for the #5 spot. My guess is.... I got nothin'.
  4. For an interesting look at the life of a baseball scout there's Prophet of the Sandlots: Journeys With a Major League Scout by Mark Winegardner. I read it many moons ago and enjoyed it very much.
  5. I won't dismiss the possibility, as I believe that the Pohlads are serious about winning. It just seems against Terry Ryan's nature to sign a true front-line starter. His approach, again and again, has been to sign some below average to average guys and hope they have a career year. I'm all for this changing. I'll be shocked and delighted if it does.
  6. 2015 starting rotation = Hughes, Nolasco, Meyer, Gibson, May. Pelfrey may be in play. Not really sure how that is going to play out, but this seems more likely than anything else I can come up with. I cannot imagine anyone but Terry Ryan sees a MLB pitcher in Milone. Based on his WHIP, SO/9 and FIP I just don't see it. I think that will be better, but is it a .500 team? Better? Worse? Help me... I'm drowning in uncertainty.
  7. I thought it was fairly clear, but yes, that is exactly what I was trying to imply. Thank you.
  8. I think we've all had high hopes for May. This is really good news. It is only one game, but it gives a glimpse of what this kid may be able to bring to the table. Nice write-up. Thanks
  9. I think that to expect Milone to be part of a quality rotation is unrealistic. If you look at his WHIP, FIP and SO/9 they are all pretty weak numbers. Meyer and ... somebody... Don't really know what to expect of Nolasco. He was league average the last couple of years in the NL. As with most pitchers who leave a team and come to the Twins and work with Anderson, his strikeout rate is down. Maybe he will bounce back. We all hope so, but realize that 'bounce back' would be to league average. While we are busy hoping, maybe Pelfrey will come back and be healthy and effective, too. We can all hope for unusually good years. That seems to be what Terry Ryan does.
  10. In spite of this, Revere has the 5th highest batting average in the NL. Edit: (fun fact - Morneau has the 2nd highest BA in the NL, Span has the 8th highest)
  11. Fair enough, so we don't really know what we have yet. Santana NEVER posted an OPS of .800 or greater in the minor leagues. For that matter, Kennys Vargas didn't hit .285 or better in 2013 or his time in MiLB in 2014, but he's doing it now. I have some optimism regarding Escobar. He made huge strides in AAA last year. Maybe Bruno has something to do with it. I sure hope so. We can certainly hope that the numbers these young men are putting up are for real. We cannot know for a year or so.
  12. So Max is getting >10 SO/9. Pretty impressive, but no one wants to sign him for 6 years. OK, so what about 3 years, $90 million? I know, it's a huge investment, but it is less than the (projected) 3 good years at $24M and basically just a final $54M bonus for signing with us in the first place. Not saying this is the best idea, just one that has not been kicked around much. If Scherzer has confidence in himself he may expect that he could make more than $25M per year at that point. Who knows what an 'average' pitcher will be making then?
  13. Hoping, indeed. It seems Ryan does this every year. This is a pretty safe prediction. And it is getting old.
  14. I appreciate the article, Jim Crikket. I cannot see how the Twins can 'stay the course'. Last time they changed things up a bit in the coaching staff they clearly simply took out scapegoats. Anderson and Vavra (and Ullger) remain. I like that Bruno seems to be having some success, but it is probably too soon to say for sure. He certainly has earned the right to keep his job. Don't see any such evidence from our starting rotation. Hughes is such an aberration to the norm that he really stands out as a pitcher who has gotten better, seemingly in spite of working with Anderson. I really believe that the Pohlads want to win. I also believe that they need to make some uncomfortable changes to make that happen.
  15. The title is so sadly appropriate. Indeed, Hughes starting a game makes a big difference.
  16. Nice write-up Stringer Bell. Hard to argue with any of it. I believe the right handed hitters coming are supposed to include Buxton and Sano. A year or so ago we all were hoping they'd be on the team this September if not before. Doesn't always go like we want it to. As far as the rotation, the Twins have to sign someone who is actually expected to be really good, rather than some pitchers we hope can put together a career year. Low risk/low reward is the way of Terry Ryan, however, and I have little faith that this will change. Something you really have to give Tom Kelly - the team had the fundamentals down. We miss that. It is sometimes very costly not to have that part of the game working. I'd be OK with changing out Gardy, but Anderson has got to go. This is just ridiculous. He couldn't strike anyone out when he was a pitcher and apparently cannot teach others to do it either. He's had a long run. Let's try someone else there. Alas, what might the off-season bring?
  17. Part of the problem is that Ryan signs a guy like Nolasco for more $ per year than Kazmir signed for, and to a longer contract. Better pitchers would help. Signing someone who is likely to be an excellent, above average pitcher would help. (rather than hoping for lightening to strike) That said, Anderson has too much history of pitchers coming here and doing worse or leaving the Twins and doing better. jokin had an excellent post on that about a year ago. Bottom line for me: I appreciate loyalty, but Gardy's loyalty to Anderson exceeds his loyalty to the Pohlads or to the Twins fan base. Anderson has to go. If Gardy leaves because of it, so be it. * if Gardy leaves because of it a lot of teams would think twice about hiring him as their manager
  18. Thompson's SO/9 in his MLB career is 1.2. What can Anderson teach him that he doesn't already know?
  19. I'll be on that list, the one where we think this kid is going to be fine. Hang in there Trevor!
  20. I'd like to throw a word in for Eduardo Escobar, Danny Santana and Brian Dozier being in the 'quietly solid' bin. Santana and Escobar will take a year to see what they can really do, but Dozier has shown that we can expect him to be solid without being accused of being overly optimistic. And Plouffe has been in the upper third of MLB 3B pretty much all year in both offence and defense. Been a while since we had one of those.
  21. This just looks so bad for the Twins. And I'm one who does not consider the Pohlads to be cheap or lacking in their desire for a World Series. The promotions are fine, though the 'Summer's Eve Bobblehead Night' was awkward.
  22. Honestly, Shane... Sometimes you just make me shake my head. Um, you realize that Plouffe, Pinto and Nunez can all hit home runs? That Escobar has an OPS+ of 100? When did the Twins ever bother to have a bench that looked that ready to contribute?
  23. Thank you for making it a separate site. When I come to this site I come here for baseball. Best to have the sites not lose their focus.
  24. I see no reason to believe Santana will take the SS position from Escobar. I will be very surprised if Buxton and Sano are on the Twins next year before June, and a little surprised if they are both on the team before August. If you are going to have those two in the lineup, I would move Santana to LF and put Escobar at SS. Hicks has a value as a good fielding CF. He has never in his career shown the BA or OBP that would suggest he would be a good player to have in LF. Just my humble opinion. Of course, it will be interesting to see if Santana can maintain an OPS of > .800. He never did it in the minors.
  25. I don't think EE's year should be that surprising. When he went down to AAA last year he clearly figured something out. I am optimistic that he can be a good fielding SS with a good bat (for a SS) for the Twins for some time. Doesn't mean I don't think Santana should play there sometimes, just that EE is our SS for now. And I suspect that the 'trade him now' was tongue in cheek. I've never trusted Dave and his vodka.
