  1. I wouldn't fault either decision, but the start will go to Santana. The argument for Gibson is that the Yankees have never seen the new, improved Gibson, while they faced Santana recently. Not a terrible argument, either. If I were to put money on it I'd guess Santana.
  2. Have to play the hot hands. Mejia will have a chance to show if he can get through a lineup here in these last games. Colon is almost certainly not a good idea, but we have few options after Santana, Berrios and Gibson. At this point I would lean heavily toward Mejia, with Gee coming in to try to salvage a poor start by someone.
  3. There is an excellent (if abbreviated) discussion of fWAR, bWAR and WARP here.
  4. I noticed Rodriguez's numbers a few weeks ago and was curious why a guy that age and with those stats was being left in AA. I see that he did get 20 PA in AAA. I suppose with Hague doing pretty well and a need to see if Park was going to break out it left him with little room. Great lists, guys! Thank you
  5. I would like, by the end of next year, to believe that Mejia was part of the core. For that matter, by the end of next year I'd like to think Garver was clearly part of a solid future as well.
  6. This is really fun, Ted. Thank you. I would have gone with Jeremy's list. I still think Turley should get some time on the MLB hill, but that's hard to do in a Wild Card race. I like the Wells brothers, too. Nothing against Clark Beeker, but a 24 year old in A ball (two years older than the competition) who has a 5.9 K/9 rate... that command and control better be Maddux-like.
  7. The way that the rotation is lined up right now it appears that Santana would likely be the starter in a Wild Card playoff game. Should it come to that...

    Review

I suppose I could really be stubborn and insist that my 70-75 wins prediction is still in play, but even I know that is unlikely. The progress of the offense has been delightful and the defense has been awesome. I've seldom been so pleased to be wrong (a distant second to that woman I thought would never go out with me). Give this offense and this defense some pitching and post-season play would be almost unstoppable. That assumes, of course, no significant injuries next year.
  9. As one who has steadfastly defended Rosario pretty much all year, I don't even consider this criticism of him. He is an excellent hitter. He need not be great at stealing bases to be an asset to the team. As I believe you are pointing out, I think it's unwise to continually have players do things they are clearly not good at.
  10. But he doesn't see 'the error of his ways'. This is not the first game he has done this. Time and again, even early in a game he will play for one run, when with a bullpen like ours you want to put up crooked numbers. The Twins have one of the best offenses in the AL. Why would you give away outs? If the Twins win the World Series I would still want a different manager next year. ALL the stats show that bunting is usually a mistake. Especially when he has our hottest hitters doing it. I'm sorry, but that is just dumb. And continuing to steal against a guy who has twice led the league in throwing out those attempting to steal is not terribly wise, especially when you have hot hitters coming to the plate. Perez had at least one game I remember from last year where he threw out at least two attempting to steal. Molitor knows way more about baseball than I ever will, but could he read The Book, or at least the article that Blake refers to above?
  11. Fun story. Thanks for sharing.
  12. I still tremble when Colon is the starting pitcher, but I do so with the realization that, for reasons that completely elude me, the Twins have a chance to win the game. Oddly enough, I am glad he's on the roster. (still not sure I believe I am saying that)
  13. I never get enough of reading about that game. It was the only game I ever attended at Milwaukee County Stadium. Good for me!
  14. Very interesting Riverbrian! *passes collection plate*
  15. Jeter won 5 Gold Gloves. No statistic anywhere can explain that. Greg Maddux won 18 Gold Gloves. In 1993 he committed 7 errors. He won the Gold Glove that year. Brad Radke played MLB for 12 years. In those 12 years he committed 7 errors. I'm not suggesting that Brad Radke was a better fielder than Maddux (or Jeter). Still, something's amiss.
  16. This is exactly correct. We need Santana and Berrios to give us a chance to win their starts and we need some help from someone we don't really see it coming from. Big Sexy seems to get the job done, but I am never brimming with confidence when he takes the mound. I seem to have more a 'fear and trembling' thing going on.
  17. Gonsalves is not on the 40-man, so we are unlikely to see him in MLB this season. The same is true of Park. I would actually give Nik Turley another shot. Those minor league numbers are not a fabrication. Another MLB outing where he gets lit up might show that we really do not want to burn a spot on the 40-man roster over the winter. A strong and promising performance might make a difference in how we view our future potential starting rotation.
  18. A nice write-up for Perkins, who has been a positive influence for the Twins. Hope his next outing is successful, even if it's in a losing effort.
  19. I would think we would send Enns to AAA. Really cannot imagine why not.
  20. If we're going to look at the stats these players have put up in this, their first few games, then MacKenzie Gore has pitched in 4 games (12 IP) and has posted a 0.75 ERA with a 0.75 WHIP. He has 13.5 K/9 and only 1.5 W/9. He signed for less than we gave Lewis. Time will tell.
  21. Robbie Grossman's OBP so far in August is a terrible .265. If he adds .100 points to his OBP that puts him near the rest of the year. Then he is still an OK DH. Not the prototypical home run hitting DH, but a guy who often gets on base and, consequently, moves runners forward. Hoping that in Robbie's case this is just a SSS aberration. And yes, we badly need Berrios at his best.
  22. I have believed in this guy for a while. Really glad I don't have to eat my hat. It has sweat stains.
  23. Yes, well, we've been saying that for some time now. Instead we have Dillion Gee (age 31) and his 4.15 ERA, 7.45 FIP and 1.769 WHIP apparently starting on Saturday. We have Big Sexy (age 87) still in the starting rotation. As a side note, why doesn't Seth interview Big Sexy and ask about things early in his career. Weren't both Cy Young and Tris Speaker teammates of his at one time?
  24. I thought Esco might be going elsewhere, too. However, Adrainza is having a career year at the plate and we don't know if we can count on him to hit well again next year. Almost no one expects Vielma to hit well in MLB. So if we traded Esco now and Dozier in the off-season we are suddenly in a MI crunch. Help is coming, but I don't believe it will be here early next year.
  25. Players brought up to the MLB roster in September have to be on the 40-man, do they not? (requesting a correction to this if anyone knows this to not be true) Why would we put Gordon on the 40-man a year before have to? If he plays great in AAA next year he can be added and brought up at that time. Someone on the 40-man who is under performing can be demoted then. And I don't believe that moving Polanco to 2B is a very comprehensive solution to anything. His struggles at the plate are not going to be fixed by changing the position he plays on the field, especially a position he hasn't played all year. I expect Dozier to play for the Twins next year. If he has a great season he may be moved if the Twins are not contending. Otherwise he will play out his contract and be a FA in 2019. By then Gordon should be ready and we'll have a better feel for what Palacious & Aarez may provide, along with a more clearly predictable timeline for them.
