  1. You can make statistics tell you anything you want. I would like to believe that the Twins will get 3-4 of their younger relievers up this year. I believe Pressly will be here at some time and also maybe Graham. After that you have Chargois, Burdi, Corey Williams, and Mason M(won't try to spell it). There also may be others (Rogers and a couple of less heralded pitchers). This site talks about blocked players all the time and then totally ignores this for the bullpen. These young pitchers bring serious gas, and I hope they will be allowed to use it here. Also don't forget Meyer who may yet figure things out. That is about 8 pitchers for the 3 - 4 spots. I would expect some of them to work out.
  2. With the Twins minor league talent, you do not want to sign a pitcher for more than one year, none of the better relievers would sign a one year contract, end of discussion.
  3. I would hope that all the Twins starters pitch well in spring training. At the end of spring training teams will have injuries and be looking for a starting pitcher. Then you trade one of the bigger money men.(or Tommy Milone). I would rather clear one of the three righties.
  4. I expect this year will be telling, he will reach AAA where a number of AAAA pitchers exist. They will exploit his weaknesses and we will have a much better idea of what his success expectation will be in Minnesota. I too hope he makes it.
  5. Twins as noted above have always paid there own players. Puckett also being along with Mauer the examples. Not having a domed stadium will not hurt now, but will be a factor 10 years from now. I know of places that have quit sending buses to the Twins because of the bad weather fear. Foxsports makes good money because they are the only game in town for the sports teams and while they cannot totally dictate the price paid, they can certainly put a lid on it. Until all the major sports teams in this area put together their own network, this will not change. Baseball is still a funny game, with the demise of PED's the average player will be done in their early thirties(this is true of all sports). So FA is not all a good deal if the average player hits it 2 - 3 years before they really decline. That is why a number of midmarket teams have issues when FA contracts went bad(Cleveland being a prime example, not being able to add a big bat or two because of the Borne and Swisher contracts). Pitchers seem to last a little longer, but with the changes in innings pitched, most starters throw a lot less pitches than they did even 10 years ago. Twins have done better than most teams as they can afford to eat a couple of years of one or two bad contracts if they have to (Nolasco may be a prime example). I as a result can buy a conservative approach of letting talent develop and having windows, but all this may change with the next CBA.
  6. You missed Corey WIlliams and Mason Melakokios(need help with spelling his name).Either one could make the opening day roster and probably within a year be blocked with a 2 - 3 year Left handed reliever contract.
  7. Depends on price. If you could get him at 1/$6 to 1/$8, it might be worth the flyer. If he does well, you can flip him for something you need. If he flops, cutting him on a 1 year will hurt, but not horribly. Maybe trading Nolasco and picking up 1/2 the money could free the payroll. Worst case he is a 4th outfielder, defensive replacement this year.
  8. I would guess the Twins are hoping to keep both Darrell and Strong. This is a tactic used a lot by Toronto last year to pick up minor league depth pieces. Win some and lose some. Look at it as clearing roster space and adding to depth. None of these two rate to break spring training with Minnesota.
  9. I agree with much of the above, however teams like this can get old in a hurry. Bullpen is much better at the end, but little change above. Zimmermann is not Price and rest of rotation is iffy. What you get out of Verlander could be the determining of which end of the crapshoot they are on. To get to be really dangerous might have had to spend another 20 - 30 million to upgrade the pitching. This team has at most a 3 year window after which the desert beckons.
  10. Unless your an elite closer, relief pitchers do not buy anywhere. Here today, gone tomorrow
  11. Tonkin is a AAAA pitcher. Do not see him as a long term option or even a short term one.
  12. Still also like Cleveland, they will need to spend more money, but starting pitching is much better that the rest of the division. They could be a force if money is spent to upgrade the offense.
  13. Expect Buxton to start in Rochester unless he really impresses in spring training. Rest is about correct. Only difference I see is in the bullpen where I expect Tonkin fails and is released or traded, opening a spot for one of the Chattanooga relievers to start here(Burdi ?)
  14. Believe Arcia, if he does not bomb in spring training will be in Right, with Sano in left and Rosario in center, not ideal, but one choice. Santana will be utility for all positions And Nunez will be infield backup and left field third option. If Arcia bombs or Buxton or Kepler has an outstanding spring, all bets are off, but would guess either Park is sent out to AAA for a couple of months to get his feet under him or TR will have to make a major trade at the end of spring training, stay tuned.
  15. If Michael is ever going to make the Twins, I would expect he needs to move up to Rochester, so think he will start there. That would move on of the Rochester players down.
  16. It was supposed to be that they wanted to see if the Houston GM had stolen and used data he received during his ST Louis days. The hacking and using of information is illegal, hence the guilty plea, however still to be determined(presumably by the FBI) is if the Houston GM and associates stole proprietary data from ST. Louis. In theory you can take what is in your head, but a copy of the database St. Louis used and player notes would be illegal.(In a written form). FBI notes yet to come and it would not surprise me if the final result was a pox on both houses.
  17. Agree with the nice summary. Hopefully Murphy does become a league average catcher, we gave up a to acquire him. Hoping that Garver becomes the answer by mid 2017.
  18. Do not need to buy high on a player is might be a slight upgrade. Escobar is fine for me until one of the better shortstops arrive from the minors(expect 2017 - 2018) for that to happen(Gordon is the most likely, but not the only choice). If you have to spend the money a 1 - 2 year contract for an outfielder who wants to reestablish value and same for a bullpen piece or two, but do not give long term contracts this year, when good players may well by coming from the minors in the next 2 years..
  19. Twins need the extra picks and this could be the last year to sign free agents as the new CBA could well include an international draft. Twins rate to be near the top for the next few years, so we need to make our move to keep the talent influx at this time. If the players work out, who is going to miss a few draft picks over the next few years, especially low first round draft types. It is all risk against gain.
  20. Hope the Twins take the risk and go over. Players like these only come a few times and if a great number of teams are on the penalty, it may be the CBA will give all teams a fresh start with the international draft. Still the kid is supposed to have #1 talent, so it is worth the shot.
  21. I think Melotakis will be here, if not to start the season shortly thereafter, if he gets off to a good start in the upper minors. It would explain why the Twins have not signed a left handed reliever to a multi-year contract.
  22. PED's have a lot to do with the older trend. Players now fall off shortly over 30. Only superstars now can last into their mid to late 30's. Plus system is rigged as commented above to playing a good share of players less in years 1-4 against what they can make later. Because of this I expect a new CBA to be very difficult to do.
  23. This was to be expected after the end of the PED's. However this is going to be quite an issue to negoiate the next labor agreement. I can see the players wanting arbitration after 2 years and FA after 4 or 5. How this will work out is to be seen.
  24. Comments on Nolasco miss the fact that until 2 years ago the Twins had not even signed a mid level free agent and it was commented at the time the Twins had more than one offer out and Nolasco was the first pitcher to take it. Not every free agent signing works out. 2 years ago Twins needed depth in the starting rotation and signed what pitchers would take there offers. It is hard to get a major free agent to sign with a bad team unless you significantly overpay them. Twins are still a midmarket team. Draft rule changes made it much better than years before to sign drafted players, this has changed in the last 10 years. Before this super agents would steer their draftable players with high upsides to big market teams by making it known how much it would take to sign the player.
  25. Twins do not want to sign relievers who will block the prospects coming up. Believe 1 - 2 will probably be here sometime this year. Shutdown bullpen is way to go and much cheaper than buying 2- 3 top flight starters.
