  1. They may well cut Nolasco, I just think it will be closer to two weeks from now, Tonkin could be anytime now.
  2. Dean would be my first choice. Tonkin will take longer and doubt Strong should be on it
  3. Kepler will have to hit a lot to make the team. If Santana does not hit, do not see him making the team. Be will be claimed and maybe that team will hope to get him though waivers later, old game by teams that like to stockpile players.
  4. Which is why I have been proclaiming Tonkin as an AAAA pitcher. Hope he does not make the club as it will be a sign that system has not changed. Would be nice to know what Park hit for the home run and what pitches did he strike out on the last time. I would expect he will have more issues with the better breaking balls in the majors vs Korea, but could be wrong.
  5. First outings of the spring do not mean much. Much more interested in 2 weeks when regulars start playing more and pitchers who have a chance of making the club pitch meaningful innings. If Nolasco is getting rocked around March 25, will really hope the Twins cut him, and most clubs will for veterans to give them a chance to catch on elsewhere. Keeping him because of his contact should not be an option as it was 3-4 years ago, when other options did not exist.
  6. Some of you are lucky, I got nothing for having 1000 posts. On the other side, interesting list to see Wade so high, will reserve judgement of him, but it is hopefull. Walker was called as they saw him, but think it's low. Pitching seems to be as good as anywhere, we shall see in the next couple of years.
  7. I am still one of the few who would trade Dozier at some time. Polanco does not have the power, but will probably be just about as good. What could you get back, a very good bullpen piece or two, or a couple of very good prospects, that would fillin the pitching staff 3 years from now. Do not want it to happen this year, but would make sense this offseason.
  8. Feel this is a little high for Tyler. This year will do much to see how he justifies this ranking. Felt more comfortable with him in the 7 - 10 range. All this end will be much higher at the start of next year, because of the graduations that will probably happen this year.
  9. Some of the better players will take the most money and they do not care from whom, some of them want a location. Grienke was going to be on the west coast, Arizona was a surprise. Twins are never going to be a top flight destination to players who have grown up on the coasts. Top players are always going to get paid for the first few years of their contract and the last few teams only hope will be decent. Big money teams can afford that approach, mid and small market teams cannot. You have to build your teams in different ways. I will be disappointed if the Twins do not blow by their allotment and sign a bunch of Latin American players this year. This is where the Twins can win, without totally breaking the bank. It is also why some of the big money teams have done that, because with their draft positions they do not get the same chance at top flight players at the young age, it will be interesting to see what the CBA is after this year.
  10. Most third baseman this year are bringing nothing. The Reds were widely panned for the Todd Frazier deal and Plouffe though good is not considered in the same league as Frazier. Bullpen, don't know, Twins have a core of hard throwing pitchers, most in Chattanooga to start the year. Some of them could easily be here by midsummer. Let it play out, we do not know what will happen or how many of the very good Twins farmhands will make the club.
  11. Couple of notes here. Players have to want to take your money to join the Twins, this was a hard sell when they were losing 90+ games a year. Twins TV contract is not good. Twins spending will be constrained until a new TV(and much better TV) contract is signed. Twins have the minor league talent that to keep all of the best of them could lead to close to $200 million a year. (In the 2020's). Plans have to be made for that time. Most of the Twins best players will still be in their 20's when their 6 years are up(if the new CBA does not cut that to 4-5 years). Money will need to be spent wisely(hindsight is 20/20) Lireano was offered more money to return here than Pittsburg, he did not want to come back(and I do not blame him). Some players will want to stay, some will not. Clubs that are winning have an easier time attracting top flight talent. Twins just need to get there. When Nolasco was signed it was said, he was the first to take the Twins offer, do not forget this.
  12. I think the Twins farm system rated lower than expected from some sources because of the 20-30 group, not these players and the fact that they have not signed a big number of international players. Hopefully that will change. These are better than many teams in this range if not almost all.
  13. I agree that Buxton will be given every chance to win the CF job. But it would be easier for the Twins if he started in AAA and Arcia got enough AB's to establish himself, fail and be cut, or traded for something useful. A few plate appearances a week is not going to establish that.
  14. Major White Sox issue was fielding and the number of extra outs the opponents got(not so much from errors, but lack of range). Do not see big upgrade in this area, probably is better, but not to average or above. Also bullpen in front of Robertson, is not that good and may be worse that the Twins. Could be either side of 81-81 depending on bullpen and hittine. Starting pitching does win and Chicago has it.
  15. Stewart's floor to me is bust, AAAA starting pitcher, and possibly in 2-3 years a return to football. Berrios I agree with but think floor is more like mid-rotation starter a 3-4 type. Jay's floor will probably be a shutdown 8th inning reliever and high end would be like a #2 starter. Given what the Twins have in the pipeline, it is too early to peg Jay as a reliever. Starters are more valuable.
  16. Expect Buxton will start in AAA. Twins need to see where Arcia fits if he makes the club and he is too good for a part time backup if he can hit like a couple of years ago. Too much talent is a good thing to have, also Buxton in AAA buys the extra year of control. Hopefully out of this comes a trade(maybe at the end of spring training) to remove the logjam. Still on the bandwagon to trade Dozier as he could bring the biggest haul in terms of major league ready talent. Expect none of this to happen until the end of spring training. Other choice will be to give Dozier more days off as he seems to wear down during the season.
  17. This group has been very critical of signing players to block the youngsters from coming up and now a lot of them are saying we should be signing 2-3 relievers to 3 year contracts(and this will not block the youngsters?). This bullpen will be OK until the youngsters come up and then should be very good. I think you are going to see more teams playing small ball early and trying to get a lead by the 6th to turn it over to the pen. These go in cycles. I also feel that Twins starters will go deeper into games and that in turn should reduce the stress on the back end. I also feel that Pressly will help in the back end, and may replace Fien in that role. That is what spring training is for.
  18. Just looks like BA does not like Twins lower ranked players. This may have to do with the influx from Latin America and the amount of money teams have spent to upgrade their talent. Press may be better on many of those players than the talent. BA seems to rank based on the top 30, and Twins lack of spending on Latin American talent may be hurting them. Hope the Twins plan to bust the budget this year or we may not be looking at any of the good Latin American talent in this period, as I feel there will be a rush to sign as many players as possible before the CBA changes.
  19. Walker will probably get a chance at some point in time. Hope he starts in AAA, expect that some of the 4 outfielders signed this winter(for depth) (Benson, Mastro, Sweeney, Quentin) will be released during spring training. At least I hope they do, can't block all the OF prospects at AA.
  20. No reason to do this. Twins have a couple of CF's not named Buxton in ROsaro and Santana. Already made a better minor league signing in Quentin. Jackson will be taking a 1 year make good deal for too much money as it is. And here is not where he would want to sign.
  21. I believe Santana is a lock to start with the Twins. Arcia will be given every chance to suceed. If he fails it will be because he has not been able to figure out major league pitching. Tonkin will not make the club as I expect one or two of the super pitchers along with Pressly to beat him out. I hope TR gets some value and trades him in spring training
  22. I feel Benson and Walker are sent out early. Buxton is sent to AAA for a couple of months and Arcia and Quentin make the club and are given AB's to see how they do. Status of Park also has some bearing as if he goes to AAA then one extra outfielder makes the club. But outfield will be Rosario, Sano and platoon of Arcia and Quentin to start. After Buxton comes up one is traded or cut of Arcia or Quentin. If Park makes team it is much murkier but Quentin probably goes to AAA as insurance policy. Arcia will get a good look to see where he fits and depending on results most of the rest will revolve around that.
  23. I would expect the Twins pitchers will be better than the hitters. Twins pitchers seem to look like major league average, Twins hitters could be all over the place, but look less than average to start.
  24. Many of those years where in the Metrodome when the Twins had to run much more like a small market team. Payroll is up and will probably grow when it needs to, when some of the youngsters need to make more money. Saying this year might go down, it could happen. Central is supposed to be very competitive with most teams predicted to have between 78(Twins) and 86 victories. Things went well for the Twins last year, luck may not be that high this year. These two years in my mind where changeover years when the youngsters appeared and started to make there mark. It was horrible injury luck that moved this back a year. Twins should hit much better this year, though would like a bigger LH bat to balance the lineup(Arcia?). Most of Twins minor league thirdbase prospects are not above A or A+ ball. I expect Plouffe to be here into next year. On the last point, what do you expect Ryan to say in public, "oh we shopped Plouffe hard, but did not find an offer that was worthwhile", How does that sound to the player.
  25. Expect a few of the Rochester, Chatanooga pen prospects could well start with the Twins. They will be given the chance(I hope).
