  1. More of the better relievers are coming to be multi-inning relievers. I want some of them. We should be able to develop a few, but would like to buy one or two. Twins also need one ace type starter. This is the year to go get one.
  2. Maybe I can break this down for you. You are wasting the best years of a bunch of good young players trying to develop pitching. 2. If you were Sano or Buxton would you sign an extension with the Twins when you are unlikely to ever see an AL league championship series. 3. You need to tell your young core you are committed to winning. 4. This year pitching will be cheaper than next year, there are several big market teams trying to get under the luxury tax, so they can have a big spending spree next year. 5. Talent after next year is probably going to be a one in 10 year item. A large number of very talented players are going to be eligible for free agency. 6. Prices in the 2018 - 2019 offseason are going to reset the mlb payroll scale. 7. Twins do not want to have to be in that market. 8. Sign you top players this year where the market price is less and look for the bargins next year.
  3. I think you just have to look at the away splits, you need to be a different type of pitcher at Coors field. Also Lucroy was one of the worst pitch framers this year. That also might be part of the reason.
  4. I am good with this, would rather have Darvish, but Chatwood would be an upgrade on the backend of the rotation, and also keep us from having to rush the youngsters. Probably will be somewhere in the ballpark of 4/50 if not higher. This is doable.
  5. I am thinking that this is way light. After arb 1(which may be a little light say $6 million), I think $12 million, $16 million, FA1 $22 million, FA 2 $25 million FA 3 $25 million, FA 4 $25 million, plus options. There is a lot of risk here, but you have several players going to break the bank after 2018 and these numbers will look way light then. Do it now, If he turns down a reasonable offer, start looking for ace pitchers to trade him for. You may be looking at the next David Ortiz here, are you willing to let him walk also?
  6. Do not mind Berrios, would kick the tires on Sano. If you cannot lock up Sano, he would be a piece for trading for an ace down the road. Dozier is going to be looking for 4-5 years minimum, just do not want this to happen here.
  7. Don't think you can lock up the entire core, you still need pitching. I would role the dice on the middle infielders until you get to Lewis and maybe Javier. You have a lot in that pipeline and pitching will be expensive.
  8. I was guessing $100 million, but you might be right on the $116 - $120. Prices are going up for the superstars. Pohlad's have spent a lot of money before for a face of the franchise player. Buxton could will be it. Go for it.
  9. Question is which smart moves, and how much is Pohlad willing to open the checkbook. Twins need pitching, pitching, and more pitching. Could happen through trades, depending on how the new FO values some of the prospects or signing FA pitchers. Should be a busy offseason. I know I will be disappointed if it is not.
  10. Do not extend without a considerable home town discount. Players 32+ can decline very quickly(read Uggla, Dan). Do not want dead money around. Twins have a number of middle infielders coming. Wait and see how it plays out, middle infielders are unpaid at this time, because of supply and demand.
  11. It would probably be close to twice Lynn. I am hoping for more like 1.5.
  12. So did the strikeouts. Only two explanations for the power increase, juiced baseballs, undetectable steroids.
  13. And why can't you afford a true ace. They are only going to cost you 10 - 12 million a year more than Lynn, be younger, and more likely to lead to team to the world series. You are assuming Lynn is a #2, I believe more like a #3 and will be a #4 - #5 at the end of the contract. Twins have plenty coming off the books in the next couple of years, let's go big.
  14. I am not saying we can't sign him, i would rather spend the money on front line pitching. Good pitching wins most of the time. Signing him and getting the core into long term contracts is sending down the path of the 90's Twins or the mid 80's Twins or mid 70's Twins. Very good hit, very no pitch.
  15. Please no, Twins need salary flexability and Dozier will start at age 32, no idea how fast his body will age, but with use of drugs gone, most players will age more quickly. 32 should be the start of the decline.
  16. Yes and if they do stay healthly they are only 3 years away, and going to want big average dollars to give up the free agency years
  17. I would go for it. Berrios can wait until after next year or even the year after, pitcher injuries scare me. I agree waiting until after 2018 is playing with fools money. After next year most very good to great players will wait for FA and know they are getting paid. That is why the CBA After 2021 is going to be so important.
  18. I would lock up Buxton and Sano, Rosario maybe also. Rosario more because if I chose to trade him later, those cheaper option years could be worth a lot to a small market club. I would expect I would want to lock them up for 7 - 8 years(Sano and Buxton), price if somewhere close to reasonable. Might well put some weight clauses into a Sano contract, but just worry that if we do not sign him longterm, he could be the next David Ortiz. Plus after next year we will have plenty of salary room.
  19. Gibson will be tendered because of the shortage of starting pitching and his finish. Mejia I hope will be better, but the Twins had better expect to fill 2 starting pitching holes if not 3.
  20. Not a Gibson fan, but believe he will be here. Do not think we can compete in the starting pitcher market(do you want to shell out $60 - $80 million over 4 years for Lynn or Chatwood). I would more likely take a flyer on Brett Anderson and hope the calvery arrives at midseason or earlier(Gonsalves and Romero). Would only spend major money on an ace type and do not think Twins will win those battles.
  21. I am fine if it is a one year deal, I did not want 3 years, which I thought he would get. This looks like an unfair stopgap, since I do not see the next wave of FA signings and new players until 2019. This also would be the end of the Joe Mauer contract, and Jake Mauer is considered by far the best of the Twins minor league managers. that could be a plan.
  22. My problem is you have to give a three year contract(that is the standard) at this time. I just am not sure I want to commit to Paul for 3 years and then have to have Pohlad cut the checks if things go sideways. I feel if there is to be an extension it will be announced today or tomorrow(it may have to wait due to baseball rules), but if there does not seem to be activity in that direction, they are working on a new position for Molitor.
  23. My question is to the FO, is he worth a 3 year contract, if not who do you replace him with? I would guess, if allowed and they had an obvious replacement he will be transformed into a different Twins role. I think he overused his good bullpen and only went with the newbies when his main men where overworked and needed a break. I respect Molitor, just think that maybe there is a different place for him in the organization and let the new FO bring in their own guy. Next level will be much harder to get to(Cleveland is in the way) and need someone who can get us there without a fallback next year.
  24. Agree with most of this, though I also might swap Kepler for Rosario. Rest of year should be fun, and seeing what comes of all this in the offseason will also be fun.
