I don't know what caused or kicked up his disease. There are several forms of it and every one is different. I know this, in many forms stress kicks up the disease, it is unfortunate, but time to move on, since their is no cure and do not think with baseball as the profession, that he will ever by healthy for a long stretch of time again.

Don't worry about rest now, put the dagger in. Most of these guy have had plenty of rest the last few days. I can see keeping Kepler out and maybe Cruz, but let's bury Cleveland.

I feel Ober should be here next year at some time. Dobnak could work out, just do not hold high hopes for him, Balazovic next year too, but probably more like mid to late year.

Now a QO for Oderizzi is almost mandatory. Would still offer Pineda a contract, more like 2/24 and hope he wants to be with his friends on a good team. Of the others the only one I am interested in is Cole and do not see the Twins being in the $200 million range for the contract (according to MLBtraderumors this is where they are expecting the contract to be). Bumgarner will probably be back in SF as not resigning him will be a major PR disaster. Rest will depend on whether they have a QO attached, outside of maybe Hamels think most will and I believe Hamel will want more money than the Twins will want to offer.

I do feel that Pineda was just stupid, these drugs probably came from a friend in the DR, where things are not closely regulated. I know if the feeling was that he was using PED's he would have gotten the 80 games and I would not have even suggested the Twins touch him again. I still think they should offer a two year contract at a decent but reduced rate, maybe like 2/24. Twins still need 3 - 4 starters next year, unless posters are suggesting we spend like $75 million a year on starters next year, Twins need options.
-
Let's break this down. Cole will be at about 5/200 or 6/210, do any of us see the Twins spending that type of money given the history of this club. Wheeler will probably be in the 5/100 to the 5/125 range. A lot of money for a good, but not great starter. And both of the above will cost you a first round pick. Ryu - too much injury history, Bumgardner - too much money for what is now an average plus pitcher. Hamels - too old. So you are left with a trade, which will cost you a lot of capital - even if you start with Rosario (who is the least valuable of the Twin outfielders). Best you might do is Rosario, Alcaca or Gaterol, and Gordon maybe plus to pry a good pitcher away from a club that might see a pitcher in the first or second year of arbitration and a long way from competing. Perez's option is reasonable, what you see is what you get, an above average 5th starter. Twins window is open, but improvements are needed to keep it open beyond the next 2 years. And those improvements have to be in the pitching area. So do not see the Twins risking their future next year on having 2 rookie starters both perform. I want to QO Pineda and try to work a deal with him, I am guessing it will take like 3/45 to be in the ballpark. Oderizzi, I am more on the fence with, but he will probably take a QO and that pushes the problem a year down the road. And no to Gibson, this was my take even before his health issues.

Given the choice of Cave or Wade, I think the choice is Cave, Wade is more like AAAA depth.

Clearing space - decisions about pitchers
beckmt commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
I see hope for Smeltzer and Thrope, not so much for Stewart. I am still out on Dobnick. Stashek looks more like bullpen filler to me (but small sample size). Poppen I do not see making it. Can see Twins putting QO on both Oderizzi and Pineda (though I am hoping to sign Pineda at like 3/45 or 4/60) and that may be light. Oderizzi I am hoping to keep for one to two years until we see if some of the better Twins starting pitching prospects make it. Still hoping the Twins sign an ace, but that does not seem like the Twins way. Other way might trade with Cleveland some of our outfield depth, for some of their starting pitching depth.- 9 comments

Clearing space - decisions about pitchers
beckmt commented on mikelink45's blog entry in mikelink45's Blog
List is good. Dyson has a contract here for next year. Hope Hildenberger can come back. Like the say good-bye list. Do not know about Thorpe, you missed Alcara, Hope the Twins can sign Pineda (1), Oderizzi (2). They still have to buy at least 2 FA starters in the offseason. Dobnak looks like long relief at best, maybe a #5 starter. Stashak is still too early to tell. Romero if he is out of options, may be out of time here. Do not see he is ready yet, too bad.- 9 comments

A lot of these will be added, so hope some deals are made. Current time Blankenhorn, Graterol, Alcala, Duran, Celestino will probably be added, Colina is possible. Rest will have to take there chances and expect we lose some. Schoop is certainly gone, Cron could be either way depending on the close the FO thinks Kirloff is. That is why I can see the Twins trading Rosario and maybe a couple of the other prospects to clear room, why getting one better pitcher (starting)..

Front Page: Maybe the Twins Bullpen is Actually Good?
beckmt replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am not as concerned as the Twins seem to have plenty of possible relievers in AAA and on the shuttle. I would like to see if the Twins add one power arm (Gaterol or Alcala) if not both to the mix. Do not feel the Twins need to add a reliever this offseason, but need to add at least 2 quality starters. -
The Case for Trading Eddie Rosario this Winter
beckmt commented on Brandon Warne's blog entry in BW on the Beat
Unless the Twins are willing to break the mold and pony up for a closer to front line starter, they will have to trade for one. You either have to deal with a team like Detroit, whose goals are at least 2 - 3 years down the road and the starters they have will not be in Detroit for more than the very early range of the window, or a club like the Mets, who have excess pitching, but want big returns for it. Would rather see the Twins just pay the money, but many of the pitchers are on the wrong side of 30 and still want 4 - 5 year contracts. And some of them will have QO's attached which is even worse. Expect the Twins might well QO both Pineda and Oderizzi if they cannot work something out for them. Otherwise will expect that either Rosario or maybe Buxton will be gone this winter to bring back a front line starter. Do not see Twins starters from the minors be ready to fill more than one spot next year. -
It is a question of which 4 starters do you keep, right now the two worst Twins starters are Gibson and Berrios. Problem is that Cleveland won't go away, so the Twins could go to a 6 man rotation and give the starters extra rest. I believe all you have to be is on the 40 man on september1 to be eligible for the postseason. Think the Twins will have about 35 players here to choose from at the end of the month. We should get a better feel for the offseason, by whom the Twins keep for the playoffs.

I somewhat agree with the above as the White Sox probably will not be there next year, but certainly by 2021, unless they open the wallet and buy more talent than I think they will. Twins need to retain at least one of Oderizzi or Pineda, with my choice being Pineda (not expecting both and will not pay Gibson what he will want for his early 30's seasons. Twins have enough trade chips to make one deal for a decent starter and filling one from the minors is probably the plan. Do not see the Twins going away anytime soon (hitting may not be as good, but pitching should be better). bullpen is the biggest need, but you always can find decent bullpen help in the winter.

The Case for Trading Eddie Rosario this Winter
beckmt commented on Brandon Warne's blog entry in BW on the Beat
Maybe packaging a couple of the 10 above with Rosario, would land a decent starting pitcher from a rebuilding ballclub, or even one that is light on prospects and values money. I have said that sending Rosario is the best starting block for a conversation on a starting pitcher. You need to fill 2 - 3 spots this winter, will not be easy without a trade. -
Yes it can, we just have to bring some of it to Minnesota. Certainly there are a few people who need to be replaced.

Despite Recent Turmoil, Twins Rotation has Provided Immense Boost in Strong Season
beckmt commented on Brandon Warne's blog entry in BW on the Beat
Article was great. Points out the value of very good starting pitching. Cleveland still has better starting pitching because they have found value from the starters they called up. Twins are still a little above .500 the last two months, despite the bullpen struggles. A lot of the credit has to go to the starters for getting us into a position to win games.- 4 comments

Gaterol is my first choice here. It is probably too late to stretch him out, so use him as a one or two inning option. If Perez fails tonight, do not car if we release him, only thing he would be in the pen is a long option. Krol who is in Rochester might be another option, seems to be doing well there. Then find one of the young kids in Rochester to be the 5th starter.

Front Page: 2019 Minnesota Twins Trade Deadline Recap
beckmt replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For the record from what I have seen 1. Gallen upside was a #3/#4 type starter, sometimes that type pitches well for a while. 2. Syndergard was available if you wanted to make the Mets clear trade winners. Buxton or Kirloff/Lewis seemed to be the starting ask, this is a no go. However this winter if you cannot sign Buxton to an extension and feel you never will, then maybe you can see if Syndergard will sign an extension here and make a deal on these lines. Aces are very hard to find, that is why they are the highest valued pieces around. Lewis is probably going to be a better hitter than Buxton and just slightly less of a fielder, so to me this is possible.- 93 replies
