  1. I mean, I certainly think he has a better shot to help a team (if healthy) than some of the other #5 types that have gotten big deals this offseason. I more am just saying that Varland is good and should be on the team in some capacity, and I still think adding a playoff level arm is coming. But it's certainly possible that in-season trades will augment the rotation too.
  2. I don't think starting pitching is better with adding Descalfini compared to last year with Gray. I wouldn't bet on Gray having another career year in 2024, but to truly improve the rotation I think more needs to be added AND/OR the internal guys (Ryan/Ober/Paddack) need to all improve over their 2023 versions. That's certainly possible. DH, I think they add a right handed bat. JD Martinez would be great here, but there are other options too.
  3. Why can't he be rotation depth and act as the long guy/6th man? I still think there is a good chance they roll with 6 starters to be honest.
  4. I'm not at all sure he will be at St. Paul. He can help the team, so IF Desclafini is the #5 (I do think they can roll with a 6 man rotation fwiw) then I also still see Varland in Minneapolis instead of St. Paul. Desclafini did have some really good starts last year, including 8 innings of only giving up 1 run AT Houston in early May. I still think they are going to go for a top of the rotation arm, or at least playoff worthy. Certainly they will add a bat now I'd imagine.
  5. I don’t know how someone could say he is a better option to start than Varland is. Maybe he will make starts, but right now he is long relief at best right? Unless they do start with a 6 man rotation. Even then, the “rope” for him being around isn’t long
  6. I would title this more like “There is still more to do.” Clearly this trade brought good value overall, but it did not bring the “high impact starter” that the front office has been saying is their focus all offseason. They’ve now said they plan to reallocate the money into the roster, which to me means a right handed bat. That’s either a dh/1b option (of which there are many still available) or possibly an outfielder. That’ll be interesting to see what they do. They haven’t yet acquired a playoff level starter. Lots of time this offseason to accomplish that too.
  7. I think they could still be in the market for a new starting pitcher, and probably also a right handed hitter. But this trade is interesting for sure.
  8. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/01/falvey-twins-plan-to-reallocate-money-saved-in-polanco-trade.html What right handed hitter are they going to bring in?
  9. Just saw it come across mlbtraderumors. No word yet on what is coming back. More to come
  10. He also is only 23, and was VERY good the 2nd half of 2023. I have to think, someone like him, who was drafted and put in AA VERY quickly after being traded from the Mets to the Blue Jays, to then deal with the covid season only to then get on a 3rd team a year and a half later, if he is someone who is FINALLY having some consistency with coaching and see if that has helped. I'm not saying he is a SURE thing. But I do think he is close to truly earning a shot. I know he debuted last year, and if his stuff+ numbers are good AND he has added a tick or two to his fastball, then we may have something here. Seeing how he looks this spring will go a long ways.
  11. I'd absolutely take Burnes over Gray, but you are right, maybe it is subjective to rank in this way.
  12. Burnes best year, by far, was 2021. His strikeouts per game, and fastball velocity, have dipped a little bit since then. I think Milwaukee's development/organization are outstanding. He clearly isn't thrilled with how they treated him last year in the arbitration process. Maybe there is a way that the Twins could work with him and get his velocity bumped up just a smidge during his contract year? I'm probably being naive in still thinking he is available. But there is definitely a top of the rotation arm in there, even if he isn't what 2021 brought.
  13. My expectation is they add a playoff level starter to the rotation. That would probably make SWR 7th, so that's what I'm going with.
  14. Count me in the camp of those who are very excited over SWR. Great writeup, and exciting guys to follow.
  15. That works for me, and it tracks with what they've done before. They pivoted after not getting Zach Wheeler and brought in Josh Donaldson. I'd imagine they have a few options and know what the cost will be and are just waiting. IF one of the moves they are waiting on doesn't work out, contingency plans are important too. Something will happen, I'm more certain than ever.
  16. I'd love that too. Julien is going to be a great player, I agree. I more just meant, getting a pitcher the caliber of Burnes is going to hurt. That's all.
  17. I'd be interested in knowing what Milwaukee would be open to trading him for. That's all. If they would take what you listed out, I'd do that too.
  18. Burnes is a top of the rotation type ace. There truly aren't that many guys like him in mlb. How many pitchers would you truly rate above him in terms of aces? 5 maybe?
  19. I can see the thinking, based on other moves that the team has made in the past. For me, getting someone similar to Pablo (maybe an extra year of team control, probably another tier to get to) would be someone like Mitch Keller or Dylan Cease. I could very much be swayed into trying for Nestor Cortes as well, and he MIGHT be available if the Yankees do end up signing someone like Blake Snell. That said, I'd be all over adding Burnes for 2024 if he is attainable. Is there someone more in that range that you like?
  20. I could see extensions for a number of young guys if they are open to it. Julien comes to mind, as does Lewis and possibly Duran.
  21. If Milwaukee were to trade someone like Burnes, what do you think they would actually listen on?
  22. To each their own. Id prefer a minor league signing, like Jake Odorizzi, to add depth compared to Clevinger. And I am a fan of SWR
  23. I like the idea of SWR being our 7th starter a lot more than Clevinger being a part of the rotation
