I don't know. If Jess Passson says it, it must be true :)

Just throwing it out, that if Castellano shows literally anything in camp, that they work out a trade. I don't see any reason to just offer him back now for nothing.

Here is what spotrac lists for 2024 and his 2025 buyout. But it's certainly possible the Twins covered some of the buyout for sure.

The Twins only covered 4 million of Margot's 2024 salary. The Dodgers covered 4 and Tampa covered 2 for his 2024 salary.

From all accounts he is a good dude, and for everything else he has been available. That's absolutely something the Twins don't have enough of. He hasn't played less than 140 games in any of the past 4 seasons. Prior to his injury on June 7 of 2024, he was hitting 251/329/403 for a wRC+ of 117 in the first 61 games. After his broken heel he missed 2 weeks and played the rest of the season at a 220/285/336 pace, or 73 wRC+. I have to think they are thinking he can at least get back to pre-injury levels in 2024, let alone possibly even closer to his 2021 or 2022, both would very much help. And, in the end, if he truly does get outplayed by any of the potential guys that could be looking for work this year, that's not a bad thing either. He's only signed for 1 million for this year. Ok, last thing, he is only 30, and his previous 4 seasons prior to right now he has a combined 7.9 fangraphs WAR, 9.2 baseball reference WAR. Those are very solid numbers. Only to compare to Carlos Santana, in the same years (prior to Minnesota) Santana had 4.6 fangraphs WAR and 4.8 baseball reference WAR. All of this is to say I'm not at all expecting France to be a difference maker again. I just think there is a chance he could be, and for the investment it's not at all worth being mad about. Hopefully Miranda and Julien and Gasper and eventually Keaschall (and others) can learn a thing or two from him. Especially when it comes to staying on the field.

Gleeman posted these numbers in the writeup on the Athletic today... Ty France suffered a hairline fracture in his right heel on June 7, 2024 and returned 2 weeks later and hit .220 with a .621 ops in his final 79 games. Prior to the injury, he was hitting .251 with a .732 ops in 61 games. And that's in Seattle's ballpark for the most part, which gave him a wRC+ of 117. IF his heel is healthy, he most likely is closer to the pre-injury version than the after injury version right? That's not crazy to think that. It's not world-changing, but it's also certainly not negative WAR.

4.75 million in 2025. 1.5 million buyout for 2026. 6.25 guaranteed between those two. Not 8

Look back and give more data. Back to 2020. You'll see your answer then. And, I don't think this is a Miranda vs. France thing. I think it's a France vs. Julien/Martin/Gasper thing. Everyone take a deep breath. It's going to be ok.

I'd very much argue it's more an indictment on Julien. It also tells that there is very much room if/when Keaschall is ready. Miranda has an opportunity to earn a longer term role. He has to take it.

To me this shows exactly what they think of Julien. He REALLY has to show out to get another chance in the majors this year. I very easily could see him moved at some point, course he does have options. France's 2023 really wasn't too bad either, but his 2021 and 2022 are what they would hope to get back to. Good thing is, he hasn't played less than 140 games in a season since 2021. Being available is a skill, and hopefully he can help at 1B/DH as much as possible. I would have tried to aim higher personally, but it's not something I'm going to get angry about by any means. He doesn't strike out, which is a good thing.

Yankees claimed Brent Headrick off waivers from the Twins. This (by my math) puts the Twins 40 man at 39 players. Possible they are close to adding someone?

I don’t see the point to these guys specifically, at least for 1b. Turner id be ok with if he is more a dh, but I think they want to be able to cycle through guys. I want a 1b, and of the guys out there in trade, I’d prefer Mountcastle or Casas, in that order. If neither are truly available I’d prefer to just stay in house

I hope this plan helps get the core players to the end of season and into the playoffs as healthy as possible. I also have to imagine there is a plan in place to allow for Keaschall, Rodriguez and eventually Jenkins up here when they are ready to produce.

Ronny Henriquez designated. This opens up the spot(s) needed to add Coloumbe and Bader, which the team has now announced.

Michael Helman to St Louis for cash considerations. That’s one of the 40 man moves needed to make space for Coloumbe and Bader. per Bobby Nightengale

Twins looking at back-up infielders...
Cory Engelhardt replied to Twins_Fan_in_NJ's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
That, or two other options... 1) They want him to focus solely on 2B. OR 2) Maybe they would move him to bring something else in? These coming weeks are super interesting. I'd lean towards #1 over #2. -
Twins looking at back-up infielders...
Cory Engelhardt replied to Twins_Fan_in_NJ's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Could also just mean they don't feel like they have a true backup SS on the roster any longer. But yeah, I'd truly imagine that Martin could be in the outside looking in with that scenario. And of course, if they do trade Castro, they would hope to get something decent for him. Moves to come :) -
Mountcastle was runner up to Santana last year in gold glove voting in 2024 and was also a finalist for gold glove in 2023. The Twins have certainly said they want someone who is solid at 1B on defense. I'm not certain they will find a LOT better on defense that is actually available. But yeah, Bailey Ober alone is MUCH too expensive. I also don't think Castro/Paddack is a fair trade at all. I'd imagine a fair deal is closer to one of our AAA type arms (Zebby/Morris/Lewis/Culpepper/Raya) and maybe a lower level pitching prospect too if it is Lewis or Culpepper) too.

MLBTR Twins Pursuit of Dylan Cease
Cory Engelhardt replied to bean5302's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Just updating here that MLB owners unanimously voted to have John Seidler, brother of late Padres owner Peter Seidler, as Padres new control person this morning. There was a dispute going on as far as who would be the primary person in charge of owning/running the team. https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2025/02/06/mlb-owners-to-vote-on-john-seidlers-padres-role/ I don't know if this has anything to do with a Cease trade or not. But having a person in charge formally COULD potentially get things moving for any more moves that the Padres will make this offseason. -
I LOVE this idea and this fit. He would help on defense, and his pull heavy swing would play well at Target Field. Plus, with our new hitting coach coming from Baltimore, Borgschulte would certainly know Mountcastle already and know how to help him day to day. I don't at all think Bailey Ober would be the cost for Mountcastle. That seems very steep unless Baltimore sends more coming back. But we do have a number of young pitchers at AAA that I think could be a good fit going back. 100% I am sold on this. Hopefully it can happen
