    It's not unreasonable. It's logical. It's preferable even. Why have them lose even more prospects, only to come up again short in September? But that will be a distant worry by July. Cleveland will rise. Twins will continue to s(t)ink.

    Lewis seems to have an attitude that elevates the spirit. I feel bad putting that much pressure on him, but he could be the difference-maker. He could spark this team. But that's a lot to ask of any young player. It's insane to ask that of a guy who has barely played baseball for three years, and one who's coming back from two torn ACLs. So, I would fire Popkins immediately, and give Baldelli notice that the team has until the All-Star break to start turning things around. Otherwise, there's going to be a new voice in the dugout. This chronic underperforming is unacceptable.

    Not sure I follow the logic here. True, they're not going to be retiring Hicks' number in New York. Not sure how that levels getting one of the worst catchers in organizational history in return. The Yankees got two very good years from Hicks - in the field and at the plate. The Twins got less than nothing. Yes, the trade was that bad. Hicks had some value. Murphy did not. We might be looking at a very similar situation with the Berrios trade. A nibbling team like the Twins have to find a way to increase value through trades.

    Probably best to let this play out. 2022 turned out pretty well for Cleveland, and an experienced manager can find ways to place players in optimal conditions for success. Even to steal wins from hapless foes from time to time. Cleveland was not a great team in 2022, yet they won the division, and then four playoffs games. Four more wins than Baldellli has in his entire managing career. There are intangibles to this game, but the work of great managers - over time - becomes apparent. It's almost like parenting or captaining a ship. Small moves, building relationships, setting a tone - these all matter. I'd take Francona over Baldelli any day of the week.

    Few things in life are as clear-headed, concise, unfiltered and honest as results. Folks are free to defend the organization's process for as long as they want, but there's no argument as compelling as the one the outcome offers. With Pagan, the outcome is clear. So, too, is the work of the FO, from trades to bullpen stats to the shrinking lead in the standings.

    I can't shake the feeling that this FO thinks they're smarter than their results would indicate. They gather a lot of data, but they don't seem to read it well. Or, they are just fundamentally, chronically unlucky. Either way, I'd prefer that they weren't calling the shots. But to answer your question, keeping Pagan is absolutely about justifying the Padres trade. It's hubris. It seemed ridiculous to keep him over the offseason, and it seems disastrous now. Baseball is very much about momentum - look what has happened to the team since his implosion in LA. The grim spectre of 2022 hangs heavy on the team now, and this was entirely predictable.

    This. It's the yips. It continues to be the yips. This team expects to lose. You can see it in their body language. This is absolutely a coaching/training issue. Baldelli looks like a scolded dog. As a player, how can you rally behind leadership like that?

    You see this clearly. That's the pain of it. This team won't get there, because Rocco and this coaching staff can't get them there. They don't understand grit, momentum and how to help struggling players overcome the yips. It's not the payroll. It's not the talent on the roster. It's the coaching, and it has been since October 2019.

    I can't imagine what this is doing to team morale. Twins are trying to battle in a tough spot, only to watch Pagan come in and ruin crucial game after crucial game. It's 2022 all over again. The FO has made some good moves in their time here, but every good move seems to be followed by a worse mistake. They likely won't release Pagan, and this certainly won't be his last soul-crushing outing this year.

    There's still way too much 2022 in this 2023 team to make me a believer. Lotta games ahead, but there have been a lot - and I mean a lot - of squandered opportunities for wins already. You don't get those back.

    I agree with every bit of this. I'm often more skeptical (and more grumpy) than most, but credit where credit is due. These were excellent moves for veterans with grit, guts and skills.

    Wasn't Sonny Gray getting these exact calls in his start against the Cubs? I didn't see any complaining from the Twins faithful then. You gotta rise above and win games. The rest is noise. The last thing I want from - or for - this team is to get caught up in the victim mentality. Toughen up. Score runs, Hold leads. Win games. Period.

    I hadn't watched a game all season, so I hopped on to Apple TV to watch last night. One game may not tell too much, but what it did tell me backs up your thoughts exactly. This is a classic Baldelli team: slow on the bases, sluggish in the field and unprepared to hold or expand a lead. There will be no playoffs if this kind of play continues.

    I struggle with the logic that a trade that turned out disastrously for one team - a trade that no one would ever make knowing the outcome - was the "right move." No, that just means that the Twins couldn't accurately discern the likely outcomes. Mahle wasn't hit by a liner, or struck by lightning, or slipped on ice. He was injured almost immediately (like Dyson and Paddack) and totally ineffective for the team, while the prospects they gave up are flourishing. These are the deals that create seasonal WAR deficits and maybe even scrap championship runs. It was the wrong move, period. Will they survive it? Maybe. But this FO continues to bleed talent, while taking risks on health. That's unwise.

    No thank you to resigning. Players who have had TJ surgery are much more likely to experience another injury later on. Long past time for this FO to prove their ability to draft and develop impact arms in the rotation.

    Solano and Taylor - two acquisitions that are just starting to seem so, so smart. After the recent spate of injuries and the terrible Farmer hbp, this absolute NYY drubbing signals some real fight and guts in this team. And I love it.

    In the long history of excellent RandBall Stu's satire, this may be the crowning jewel. And no, I don't believe for a second that the TwinsDaily headline I woke up to this morning is real. Perhaps I will watch the deepfake "highlights" and read the ChatGPT-generated postgame anyways, just for fun.

    Us chronic overreactors don't usually get these kinds of ups with the Twins, so let us savor it until Saturday please. Because right now, I fail to see how our dear Mr. Holman is even just a bit wrong. If anything, he's underselling it. They may not give up a run all year.
