    Good luck to Martin. I think it is his time and I hope he makes it a hard decision to send him down. There should be opportunities on the short side of a platoon, either at second or in the outfield if Buxton is utilized as a DH. The mlbtraderumors.com story considers Martin a good glove at second, while the OP thinks his defense will be an asset only in the outfield. Martin can be used as a pinch runner and defensive replacement, giving him quite a few ways to get into a game. I thought Martin had the inside track to claim the 26th man spot until Margot was acquired. He’ll probably have at least until the end of next month to show he belongs.

    Not certain about this, but I don’t think they can take him off the roster unless he (Canterino) is getting service time. I am a believer in Martin’s pedigree and when he played in the spring it was often with or against major leaguers in comparison to Prato, especially. If a 40-man spot is needed to fill for Lewis’ injury, Helman or Prato have the utility skills, but I feel like it is Martin’s time, especially with Lee unavailable.

    Prato isn't on the 40-man. I think the choice should be Martin with Lee injured.

    Disagree. The team doesn't need Martin to play third except in an emergency. They have Farmer and Castro to fill the void. Having Martin available to play both outfield and second base as a right handed hitter gives them the flexibility they might need to keep Farmer/Castro at third base. I have speculated for a while that Willi Castro will play more on the infield this year and less outfield. Lewis' injury might make this happen.

    I like Castro better at third. Over and above the numbers here, Castro had zero errors as a third baseman last year, principally because he has the arm to get an out even with a bobble.

    I presume it will be Castro and Farmer at third until Lewis returns. Martin is the far better fit with his ability to play second and outfield.

    The surest way for the younger left handed hitters to get starts against a lefty is to hit left handers when they get the chance. This problem for the Twins is exacerbated because the RH platoon partner in each case is regarded as the superior defender.

    More reasons I think Smalley is an apt comparison: 1) First round draft pick out of college (same as Lee). 2) Switch hitter. 3) Baseball family—Dad was a shortstop for almost a decade and his uncle was Gene Mauch. Smalley made his MLB debut one year after signing.

    Varland got hit hard for the second game in a row, but at least he got some Ks. The bullpens strength when composed was depth. That depth is used up already, but everyone should be back by May 1 or thereabouts, none of the guys has an arm injury (except Weiss, who I never thought would make the team). I don't think bullpen injuries are the death knell for the Twins, but it probably will make the late innings in April pretty dicey. On the negative side, all of the starters got knocked around quite a bit and they yielded a ton of homers.The top three are being counted on heavily and if any of them fall apart, the season could go south pretty quick. Several guys who made the club in the bullpen weren't overly impressive--Alcalá, Funderburk, Sands, and Staumont, if he doesn't go on the IL. The bad record in the spring and except for Carlos Santana, most of the acquisitions have struggled or been injured. Critics can continue to rip the Twins for trying to win on the cheap when the competitive window is open, I guess I'll withhold judgment until the month of April is over.

    Agree, but expectations of any pitcher to be a ++starter are probably inflated. Where would Graterol rank in the current Twins' bullpen? Certainly behind Durán, would he be ahead of Stewart or Jax? Honestly a tough call. I don't know if I'd trade him straight up for Jax, because Jax seems to be a rare one with durability (quickly looking for some wood to knock on) as well as good stuff.

    I think Gaetti was more of a power guy than Lee will be. Gaetti only played 37 innings at shortstop in his career, so I don't think of him as more than an emergency guy there.

    Off the top of my head, Roy Smalley works as a comp. Defensively stretched a bit at short, but compensate for lack of foot speed by having a strong arm and good baseball IQ. Switch hitter with good bat-to-ball skills.

    With 100% of the disabling injuries suffered by pitchers and all but one of those injuries to bullpen candidates, the bullpen isn't what most imagined when the Twins open in Kansas City. If they hadn't added Jackson and Okert late, they would be really short. As it is, what was regarded as a strength is having the depth checked immediately as the season opens.

    From the mlbtraderumors.com article, the player is offered to all 29 teams and if any are interested that player is traded to them. Going from the Coulombe experience last year, the Orioles were willing to assume Coulombe's contract, but gave the Twins nothing. That would seem to be a standard for such a deal, especially if the player is to get more than the minimum if they are in the major leagues. If more than one team would be willing to assume Goodrum's contract, perhaps the Twins could get $$$ or some type of prospect in return.

    The Twins reassigned Niko Goodrum to St. Paul today. Because he has an "assignment clause" in his minor league contract, he has the opportunity to go to another team if they offer him a major league roster spot. This is the same clause that allowed Danny Coulombe to get a major league job with Baltimore and flourish.     Not with Durán, Thielbar, Topa, Staumont, Canterino and Weiss all on the IL.

    Staumont pitched after his slip, correct? If he doesn’t go on the IL, Sands could be optioned, keeping Duarte on the roster, perhaps. Also, if Duarte stays, the team would have to make a 40-man move. DeSclafani or Weiss could go on the 60-day list or someone could be DFAd. Edit to add: Duarte does have an option remaining, so he can be moved fairly freely between St. Paul and the major league team.

    This may open up an early opportunity for a non-roster guy. Duarte has been mentioned quite often. Brigham put up a nice line in today's finale. He went 2 innings with one hit and five Ks.

    Derek Law, former Sire of Fort Myers, has made the Nationals. He signed a minor league deal with them in the off season. I don't know if it was noted here, but Eddie Rosario's contract was selected by the Nationals, as well.
