  1. The talk has been a 4th or 5th starter because we have our top 3 on the board at SP right now. So this should be viewed as a 4th and 5th guy. Is it a splashy name, probably not, but it is a solid addition based on stat lines. 38 years old that has been very reliable and a workhorse. With analytics the twins love, he is 5 innings every time you hand him the ball and an occasional 6 or 7 and we are glad we have him. Splashy SP signing, do we need it for big bucks? Don't think so. I believe the 5th spot will be filled with the young guns and that is fine with me. Signing Cruz, won't happen until MLB decides on NL DH position. So, Cruz is playing his options as FA and I'm fine with that. Middle of Feb and Cruz can hop on board or not. Cruz is valuable but at $15M, he potentially is a team moves liability financially.
  2. Pirate dumpster fire continues. Owner doesn't care about putting butts in the seats during these times, he is scratching at making pennies in profit and is a business man only. He is isolating the locals (live outside of PGH) and could care less. They are a bad AAA team in big league wolves clothing. Bummed Twins didn't pull trigger to get Musgrove, not sure who I would have given up in prospects for him. Get Kuhl and a utility guy from Pirates, offering La Tortuga and .... (pirates need catching help and so much more).
  3. Limited fans not only for spring training but regular season isn't a tough decision. Outdoor sport, stadiums spacious and you can very easily set up pod seating through the stadium. Whether you are vaccinated or not shouldn't matter. Chiefs/Browns game yesterday had almost 17K fans in the stadium and spaced out fairly well from what I could tell from broadcast. Players aren't going to interact with fans and you could eliminate the first few rows all the way around the fence line to keep people distant from field. Vaccination isn't bullet proof and some folks won't do take it for personal/religious type reasons.
  4. Pirates are perfect example. It's a business for owner profit and not a business for the people to enjoy baseball
  5. Musgrove should be an easy trade target to snag from the lowly Pirates. Living in Pittsburgh area, they booted Josh Bell to Nationals that was equal to a easy haul for Nationals and a salary dump by Pirates. Pirates aren't competitive, don't want high salary guys even if they are only a few million per year. The Pirates are minor league team, minor league ownership in a MLB stadium and uniform only. Give me musgrove and couple of minors leaguers and some cash and put in the rotation
  6. Part of the problem could be the agents being money whisperers to the players. Guarantee this, get guaranteed that, etc. I'm big fan of incentives to make more money for sure, just doesn't happen as much as we hope. I would love to see all the clubs have cap on annual salary that is the same for all the players and then incentives can be up to the individual teams. For example: All MLB players make $1m per year for let's say rookies through year 2. $2m for year 3-5, then like $4M for 6-9, etc. The incentives on performance than can be set based on position played, offensive/defense etc and you get your year end bonus, etc. or even pay it out monthly. Now the players would argue, never will work, because Mgmt can bench a guy closing in on reaching certain bonuses, and "cap" the money paid out. Maybe the monthly payout alleviates some of that, don't know. I know it would never fly but would be fun to see players on same level and then picking teams to play for. Talk about balance of teams being competitive, since guys wouldn't be chasing big market teams with deep pockets and huge guaranteed contracts. Plans has flaws, not a financial GM detail guy, just fun to think about different perform to pay concept.
  7. LIving in Pittsburgh area, but grew up MD as an Orioles fan. Musgrove would be a very nice pickup for the Twins. Pirates are and will continue to be a dumpster fire of minor league talent and a couple big league guys that fill out the roster. They are in it to make money and put a team on the field that would fit nicely at the AAA level = they aren't spending big time money to keep their players as contracts expire. Big time prospects to get Musgrove aren't needed to secure his services.
  8. Health is a major concern for Buxton, not only his defensive play, but concussions are there as well. So with that being said, what is his value worth? $4-$6MM annually for maybe 100 games of action. Dynamic player, for sure, but he is becoming fragile. Have to trust the process of seeing what he is worth on the market and go from there. There is never a bullet proof trade in my opinion. As for Kepler saying it's demanding to play CF, quit complaining about it and do the job asked.
  9. DUI is a DUI but the timing of just days before he was hired as reported by ESPN is ESPN style to flare out the sensationalism in their reporting. The incident was back in February of this year. The police didn't file the arrest documents in the right jurisdiction. Not defending the guy at all, DUI is reckless but ESPN is reckless in the matter as well. White Sox should have known better if they care about background checks, etc. so let them have mud on their face by choosing a old timer. Go Twins
  10. So what we are saying here is slap hits aren't the Bomba way of the life for the twins. hate the shift, especially in double play situations
  11. Plate discipline is his key to success. Awareness of the strike zone and his ability to work his way into getting on base anyway he can. Something to say about that. Power, not so much but what would be interesting to see (don't have the analytics for it) would be getting on base with a walk vs a single in his AB's. Were there runners on base at the time that a single would have moved guys around the bases or no runners and he trots to 1st base? He knows his limitations on HR power, so taking massive swings to join the Bomba club isn't his game. Until the Twins figure out that the Bomba mentality is a cute thing and not the only way to score, Wade will be on the outside looking in.
  12. Some hard (or maybe not so hard) choices need to be made in the off season. I'll preach it again, but the way they are structured today is not fundamental on offensive side of the ball. It's homer or bust. Come playoff time it is bust. The "Bomba" mantra has too many guys looking to hit a 3 run homer when no one is on base. Can't happen in playoff baseball. Mgr moves were head scratchers, so is that youth at the helm or relying way too much on analytical data. Eduardo Perez play by play talked about how Dusty Baker (can't stand Baker, wearing wrist bands and OJ Simpson gloves as a manager fashion statement) talked during todays game about Dusty managing game one more on gut that the numbers. Sometimes your gut tells you the better moves. The shift in certain scenarios led to runs being scored, when runs are a premium in playoffs. Kudos to weak seeing eye singles, but they should have been outs and no damage. Walking to dugout on ground balls (Rosario) and not getting benched, mind boggling. Severe lack of plate discipline by most hitters, not all is fundamental. Bunt a guy over, force the other team to play defense, doesn't happen. Times a changing, turn the calendar over and now time to hit the links and head home. Crappy way to end the season
  13. That is the point. Why shift when if you play normal DP depth, then 2 outs and no infield in and you may get out the inning unscathed. Shift with no one on, I get that but DP positioning vs shifting is a better play. Kudos to hit where they aint, but shouldn't happen in late game situation
  14. well once again the shift bites you in the ass. Double play depth and guess what, 2 -0 outs. Screw the analytics Rocco!!!!! Quit the shift
  15. too many guys who want to be heroes vs playing as a team. Fundamental baseball doesn't exist with this group. Time to flip the switch and move to a youth movement across the board. Guys not running out ground balls starts with selfish player, but should end with the MGR. I don't care if you are 40 years old, Rocco needs to be a little bit more of a hard ass
  16. enough with the stupid ass shift on defense. My god. Throw the analytics away.
  17. not the result we wanted but the swing was there
  18. Fundamental baseball from both sides (offense/defense). Playoff baseball can be a one run games, but execution is key. Team baseball vs Hero ball usually wins.
  19. Polanco to not set his feet and deliver a strike = end result throwing error. Look at the replay from field level to see kind of what he saw and runner was still 10 feet or so away from base when ball hit Arraez's glove. Like Rosterman said, he had time to plant his feet and throw to first as well. Sloppy mechanics results in sloppy game play. Playing the shift on almost every batter is way overused. Earlier in the game if you played normal double play depth, would have had a 4-6-3 DP, but no we get a seeing eye single in the shift where double play position would have been. The late game bloop line drive to shortstop goes as opposite field single. OUCH
  20. Way over the top analytical managing vs sometimes you go with you gut. Jeffers has earned the right to not come out the game and Rocco has chosen to lift him in growing up moments. Jeffers in both at bats worked the count and got to pitches he liked and could put a good swing on them. Now results weren't in our favor but bat on ball and hit them hard. Garver, took 4 pitches with his bat on the shoulder. Some will question the strike zone, but in that at bat, after 2 pitches he should know anything close you swing and foul it off if you have to, to stay alive. Did nothing. Avila getting lifted for so called fan favorite 'Tuga is beyond belief. He has shown the tendency to swing at first pitches almost everytime. The announcers said curve ball will make you pull it into the ground and guess what, 1st pitch swinging wonder did just that. PLATE DISCIPLINE!... Jeffers is the only one who has it at catcher position. Garver is lost. Avila playing at all shouldn't happen. Austidillo wanting to play hero ball and feel like a Bomba killer is a reason he only had 18 at bats in regular season.
  21. 1st pitch swinging to play hero ball! What a waste...the I am a bomba player is crappy baseball. Too many guys think they are untouchable and do not hustle or have plate discipline or bunt a guy over...same crap as look at me in the NFL ( going for the big hit on defense versus wrapping up a guy to make a tackle) ...time for the older guys to lead by example and tell the guys to play for the team instead of their own name on the back of jersey..if not bench the guys and go with guys who play the game the right way...rather lose with effort and mistakes vs I play everyday because I’m cool ...call me old school but I played in college and if you didn’t play hard every play your ass got cold sitting on the bench...off season he there come
  22. 1st pitch swinging once again is TERRIBLE baseball!!!!!! Deserve to lose after 1st inning can’t score and let grienke off the hook...tortuga a fan favorite of crappy plate discipline , not me
  23. Not running out a weak grounder and walking to bench...bench his f....king butt tomorrow...lack of hustle all year is embarrassing. Garbage
  24. Managerial moves are very questionable when the spotlight is brightest...and people were hoping to play astros....quite embarrassing at the moment
