I’ll call this the opposite of politics representing human nature at its best: eight of the trapped kids in Thailand have been rescued; five to go including the coach. Racing against the monsoon, of course.
Saw this tweet that I liked: Imagine what it will feel like to one day tell your grandchildren, "I'm the one who told the freedom fighters to be polite."
The Persians, Romans, Aztecs, Mongols, Ottomans, French, British, Czarists, Japanese, Soviets, and plenty of others called and said they’d like their empires back, because they were too big to fail.
Two things: 1) The country is already irreparably divided; it's a bit late to start worrying about that. 2) No matter what the actions taken, or even the results, the way we view ourselves and the way the rest of the world views us is forever changed. There's no status quo left to try to preserve. Oh, a third thing; it's time to make a moral gut check and take a stand based on that. http://www.nybooks.com/articles/2018/06/28/hitlers-rise-it-can-happen-here/
