  1. When you were young and your heart Was an open book You used to say live and let live (You know you did) (You know you did) (You know you did) But if this ever changin' world In which we live in Makes you give in and cry Say live and let die Live and let die - Paul and Linda McCartney
  2. Back in my day the tallest building in Minneapolis was the Foshay Tower. The local TV stations put their broadcast antennas atop it. Twins games were on WTCN, and the Vikings were on WCCO (TV).
  3. Back in my day there was no World Wide Web, so we used Telnet, WAIS, Usenet, FTP, and Gopher. When I was in high school we used PLATO, and when I worked for Honeywell we were on ARPANet. Expert Systems were supposed to be the next big thing, powered by Japan’s Fifth Generation supercomputers. I had a Class C Internet subnet for our home-based business running over a 28.8 modem connection with a Windows NT Server functioning as the router. Then we became early adopters of ISDN.
  4. Hahaha! Back in my day, Pepsi was briefly the 6th most powerful military force on Earth. https://www.businessinsider.com/how-pepsi-briefly-became-the-6th-largest-military-in-the-world-2018-7?f
  5. Back in my day we went to the Moon.
  6. Back in my day we went to Shakey’s or Cicero’s for pizza.
  7. You folks are going to love Tarantino's upcoming Star Trek film; I can just tell.
  8. Toni Morrison, age 88. https://www.npr.org/2019/08/06/542391535/toni-morrison-whose-soaring-novels-were-rooted-in-black-lives-dies-at-88
  9. Chances are pretty good the Sun will still rise tomorrow.
  10. I’d say sweeping Cleveland in the upcoming 4 game series would be an appropriate response.
  11. The part of them I can see in myself, no matter how small.
  12. Pretty much this. If you don’t enjoy this kind of fantastic adventure type of story that’s cool, too. I watch a lot of reruns of 60’s-90’s scifi.
  13. Rutger Hauer, age 75.
  14. I’d say you are applying this principle of logic. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principle_of_charity
  15. It would be nice if the candidates paid more attention to what is perhaps the most dire issue of all; we are a pot of lobsters being boiled alive. How did that turn out for the lobster?
  16. Well, sorry to disappoint the crowd, but I haven’t read the post in question and don’t plan on doing so. Speaking for my own experience, being raised in an all-white suburb in the 50’s and 60’s, it was impossible not to be exposed and ingrained in bigotry and tribalisms of many kinds. Black, Asian, Arab, Indians, Mexican, Jew, Gay; all these people were dehumanized and treated not just as animals but as enemy animals. So, what happened? We grew up, kept our eyes and ears opened, and learned. My parents, and to some degree my older siblings, never really completely overcame this indoctrination. And I”d be lying if I said I have completely overcome it, too. But I work at it every g-d day. So if you call me a racist, my answer would be “You’re right, how can I do better?” Because one of the things I’ve learned is that demonization of the Other is a weakness of humanity, and it’s something that holds us back and is basically a form of cultural insanity. I choose to remain sane. You can, too.
  17. Just a brief reminder.
  18. If you're going to go there... https://www.omniglot.com/writing/sumerian.htm
  19. I was mostly advising the site to CYA. It sounds like you’re doing that, so all is well. My advice re: off-baseball discussions; general community areas are pretty helpful unless they become fixated on a single topic. Encourage diversification.
  20. He’s got a point.
  21. Hope so.
