  1. Articles are the pieces that the site software places on the front page. John Bonnes has posted similar links to his weekly podcast in this way for many years now, for example. You'll see "Article" pre-pended to the title if you come to a front-page piece via the Forums. It's simply the terminology used.
  2. Good analysis. I'd just add a counter-weight by saying that starting Castro against a lefty increases (for his career, though not 2017) by a small margin the chance of that lefty having a good game and lasting through eight.
  3. We should have traded for Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd and then combined him with Juan "El Gasolino" Berenguer as our new rotation. Instead of arguing the merits of a 4-man rotation versus 5, we could have had a 2-cycle!

  5. Cognitive dissonance?
  6. With left-handedness taking prominence, I just want to point out that Cave did display a significant platoon disadvantage against lefty pitchers in 2017, but both Wade and Granite were close to equally good against pitchers of either hand. So it's not like the AAA choices are all platooning candidates. I'd expect that Kepler and Cave would make for a more difficult duo to manage around, if ever on the same 25-man roster.
  7. What is it about catching that causes a prospect not to make enough strides until reaching AAA? Is there something too simple about being a receiver for low-level pitching?
  8. We'll keep this tidbit just between you, me, and the internet.
  9. A couple of photos from last November's AFL action:
  10. Fans: I want the Twins to be competitive ---> Make competitive offers Players: Let's maximize income---> Make competitive offers Bottom line for me: players should look out for themselves. Nothing should be simply handed to them. Owners should look out for themselves. Nothing should be simply handed to them. Fans should look out for themselves. Nothing should be simply handed to them.
  11. This is so thoroughly opposite how Molitor handled his backstop tandem last season that I am curious what prompts you to anticipate this now.
  12. It's a good reminder that other teams have prospects too. Our farm teams don't march through their seasons winning every game 12-1.
  13. They aren't doing this to minimize revenue. It's certainly not in response to taking a few million dollars out of Lance Lynn's hide. Revenue management and payroll are virtually independent processes.
  14. Zero-sum game, then? I win!
  15. Here's a swing of his from the AFL last November: From a different angle a previous day: And his "hit to me, hit it to MEEE!" pose in right field:
  16. Unless adding Lynn was going to top the agreed-on budget cap, I can imagine DSP or JP saying, "put your hat back on and get outta here. Why are you even bothering me? One year? This is what I pay you to decide."
  17. I continue to believe that Pohlad doesn't stoop to that level of detail in the business. He likely does two big things, in conjunction with Dave St Peter: sets a general budget limit, and is in the approval chain for any contract longer than two years. Contracts of no more than two years will not be a likely burden to the next GM, if such a change would prove to be necessary. (If the front office were on thin ice, that approval process might become active for any multi-year contract.)
  18. This one also. (I had erroneously labeled as fellow lefty Tyler Jay.) http://twinsdaily.com/uploads/gallery/album_174/sml_gallery_13_174_2692952.jpg

    Surprise Saguaros 2017

Surprise Saguaros game, Thursday Nov 9 2017

  22. Going the other direction from Kershaw, how about Corey Kluber, who is undeniably a fine pitcher but who took a while to hit his stride. In 2011 at age 25 he made 27 starts at AAA Columbus, totaling 150 innings. That's just above five and a half innings - approximately his rate the previous 3 seasons too. The next season he was also at Columbus and started 21 games for 125 innings - stepping up to nearly 6 innings per at age 26. Carlos Carrasco by contrast looks like he was averaging 6 innings per start for 5 years in the minors. Think of some other pitchers and see what else you find.
